So. Cal
Lot's of talk about changing the overtime format in the NFL. I have not heard this scenario mentioned.

Why not give each team 2 timeouts, put anywhere from 6-10 mintues on the clock, have a 2 minute warning and play the clock out. This should give each team at least one posession and is most fair for both teams. If it leads to more ties during the regular season, so what. This scenario (similar to the NBA OT) probably makes too much sense for the NFL.

Other scenarios mentioned:

Leave as is...sudden death:
Sounds good but too many games are decided by a coin flip. Yeah "stop the other team" is the answer but should they get a nice kick return and put together a 25 yard drive (helped by a close PI call-free yards) they are in field goal range. Pretty shitty way to lose, allowing 25 yards and not getting the ball, thanks to the coin.

Give each team at least 1 posession.
Isn't that unfair for the team who gets the ball first??? The opposing team has the advantage in knowing what it needs to do when they get the ball.

College format
Probably too gimmicky for the NFL

Give each team the ball at least once in the playoffs:
why change the format for the playoffs only???

Heard last night some NFL guy advocating that each team must get the ball once and the team getting the ball second must go for a 2pt conversion on their TD. Even more gimmicky.

Any thoughts?????

I like it the way it is only one caveat:

If the first team kicks a field goal the second gets a chance to score a TD to win. If the first team scores a TD game over. This limits the time but gives a fairer shot to the team losing the flip.

Probably wont happen, even more gimmicky then some of the other scenarios mentioned. I think I'd prefer the college OT.

Blazer That idea of yours sounds like it's a very good one and also fair for both teams. Too bad that they the NFL are not open to good ideas. They are so dumb that they think if gambling on the games was outlawed that they would get the same TV ratings. I know that if that was to happen they would get a cut of the TV money package of approx. 500 million dollars. Maybe that would help get their head out of the sand and start them thinking again.

The should each get the ball once and only once . That would be fair. Problem is if it is tied after each has a possession, then what?

A shoot out by the kickers? Nah i guess that would never work ,would it?

Gin, yes it has a gimick but they need to make a change.

Joe, thanks I thought it was a good idea. It would make for exciting endings.

Just a note: They will NEVER put the college rule into effect. It takes too long and you are dealing with professional athletes. :nono:
