There a few misguided west coasters here at MJ's that want to try and hide the rest of the Pac-10 behind USC, and actually try and get some type of respect for the rest of the conference. Some have gone as far as to say that the Pac-10 is as good as the SEC. I got bored at work today and decided to try and get some facts about this debate. I hope you all enjoy and maybe the misguided will see the light, and stop making themselves look silly when they post.

Keep in mind, I am fully aware of the fact that USC is one of the top programs in the country. However, one good program does not make a strong conference...Enjoy!

1) Since the Pac-10 was started in 1959 (45 years ago), USC has won or split 22 conference titles, almost half of the total.

2) Since the Pac-10 was formed in 1959, no other Pac-10 team besides USC has ever been named AP National Champions!!! NONE.

3) Since 1995, (and I only use this date because one of the misguided tried to use it to prove a point on another thread) the Pac-10 has 9 teams with a total of 15, 10-win seasons.

The SEC has 8 teams with a total of 27, 10-win seasons.

The Pac-10 has 2 National Championships in that time frame, they both belong to USC. (surprised?)

The SEC has 3 National Championships in that time frame with 3 different schools. (Fla, Tenn, LSU,)

4) NCAA all-time wins rankings top 25:

Pac-10: USC #10, Washington #16

SEC: Alabama #6, Tennessee #8, Georgia #11, LSU #13, Auburn #14, Arkansas #23.

Scott. please do not respond by quoting all of these, and responding with stats about USC. Please, I beg you.

gjn23, we all know you think I am an idiot, so no need to post it. I am sorry that Auburn has won more games in a row (15), than your Arizona Wildcats have won in the past 4 seasons (14). Maybe Stoops can get you guys turned around out there in the desert.

BCS bowl wins rankings:

SEC #1 (7 wins, 5 different teams)

Pac-10 (6 wins, 3 were USC)

There are other BCS conferences that can at least make a decent argument against the SEC, but the Pac-10 does not have a leg to stand on. The facts, not my opinion, back that up.

Pac 10 Resumes from 1993-2004.

UofA:
*Went 12-1 in 1998 capping the season with a win in the Holiday Bowl over Nebraska
*Won the 1994 Fiesta Bowl against Miami

ASU:
*Won the Pac 10 in 1996, coming within 60 seconds of an unbeaten season/possible National Title.

Oregon:
*Won the Pac 10 in 1994, playing in Rose Bowl
*Won the 2002 Fiesta Bowl by POUNDING Colorado
(got totally screwed out of National Title game) TOP 3 FINISH

Oregon State
*Won 2001 Fiesta Bowl KILLING Notre Dame. TOP 5 Finish
*Long the Pac 10 dormat, been bowling 4 of past 5 years.

CAL
*Went from dormat @1-9 2 years ago to bowl winner in Insight.com bowl by beating Virginia Tech

Stanford:
*Won Pac 10 in 1999, played in 2000 Rose Bowl. Considering school is equal to an Ivy league (something SEC lacks)pretty remarkable acheivement.

*Wazzu:
*3 straight 10 win seasons, last year beat Texas in Holiday Bowl
*Two recent Pac 10 Titles 1997 & 2002

UW:
*2000 Pac 10 Champion, won Rose Bowl beating Purdue finishing in the final Top 5

UCLA:
*Won Pac 10 in 1993 & 1998. Played in Rose Bowl twice.
*Won 1998 Cotton Bowl against Texas A*M
*Won 20 straight games during 97-98 seasons

USC:
*Won Pac 10 in 2003 & share of National Title. Beat Michigan in Rose Bowl
*Won 2003 Orange Bowl finished Top 5
*Won 1995 Cotton Bowl
*Won 1996 Rose Bowl

Summary:
The Pac 10 members have each taken turns putting together solid seasons during the course of the past 15 seasons (half of which in the BCS era). This despite consistently playing top Non Conference competition in the regular season. The Pac 10 has gone 6-3 in its past 9 head to head meetings with the SEC. In those last 9 meetings. Pac 10 played MORE road games against SEC. :)

Academic Fact

*Vanderbilt (Only school with higher Pac 10 academics, but pitiful football legacy)

Half of the SEC hasn't been to BCS/Major Bowl games. You have 6 have's (Vols, AU, LSU, BAMA, FL, UGA) AND THE STIFFS WHO HAVEN'T HAD seasons like those I have above listed IN YOUR LIFETIME. :mj07:

Since 1998, the 6 teams which comprise the SEC west have played a TOTAL of 20 OOC games against BCS conference competition.
The record is startling: 4 wins - 16 losses.
In contrast, USC alone has played 16 OOC games versus BCS competition in the same time period. USC is 10-6.

The SEC plays just under 14% of their out of conference games on the road and just 5% of their out of conference games out of state.
I think they need to add another "C" to their conference title for the word "Coward"

SEC - Is it really so tough to play in that conference?

Looks to me like they have four teams that are perennial losers since 1990:

Florida 6 conference titles.
Tennessee conference titles.
Alabama 2 conference titles.
Georgia 1 conference title.
Auburn 1 conference titles.
LSU 2 conference titles.
Mississippi 0 conference titles.
Arkansas 0 conference titles.
Mississippi State 0 conference titles.
South Carolina 0 conference titles.
Kentucky 0 conference titles.
Vanderbilt 0 conference titles.

Out of 14 seasons only 6 teams have won the title (9 between Tennessee and Florida) You have Florida and Tennessee to worry about and every once in a while Georgia, Alabama and Auburn. LSU has gotten hot only recently and actually has a LOSING conference record during this period. The six other teams all pretty much populate the lower end of the standings year in and year out. MSU, Kentucky S Carolina and Vandy are with rare exception an easy win. Now what's this crap about "Our conference is so tough we HAVE to schedule weak OOC teams?" Gimme a break!

Compare the PAC 10

Washington 3 conf titles, 2 conf co-titles.
USC 2 conf title, 3 conf co-titles.
Oregon 2 conf titles, 1 conf co-title.
UCLA 1 conf title, 2 conf co-titles.
Stanford 1 conf title, 1 conf co-title.
Arizona State 1 conf title.
Arizona 1 conf co-title.
Washington State 2 conf co-titles.
Oregon State 1 conf co-title.
California 0 conf titles.

Since 1990, every team in the PAC 10 except Cal has either won or tied for the conference title.

90% of PAC 10 teams have won a conference title since 1990.
50% of SEC teams have won a conference title since 1990.

The PAC 10 is a more balanced conference, while the SEC is more two tiered, with some really good teams at top and some really bad ones at the bottom.

What makes the Pac 10 look weaker is its parity. Any team can beat the other on any day and that seems to happen. So great records are more difficult. At this time USC is the exception as it has risen to another level.

This is the difference between the two conferences; in the PAC every team is a threat to win on a given Saturday, however, in the SEC only a couple of teams pose a "serious" threat".

If one conference has BALANCE and PARITY THROUGHOUT it's entirety, it is safe to say it is a TOUGHER conference than one that has only a couple of "serious" threats.

So I guess that answers the initial question. SEC - Is it really so tough to play in that conference?

The answer- NO!

I challenge ANYBODY to a Pac 10 vs SEC debate. You will always LOSE! It is so easy to tear apart the SEC. I have yet to read a strong argument on MJ's explaining why the SEC is so superior to the Pac 10. Prob. because nobody has any data to support their delusional opinion. I see posters shout about the SEC NC's, bowl victories etc. Doesn't tell a whole lot. There are 12 teams in the SEC and 10 teams in the Pac 10. Why not ask yourself why the SEC has so many NC's and bowl wins.

This fact suprised me. The Pac has almost as many BCS victories as the SEC despite the fact they have 2 fewer teams? Also, if you counted # of schools, it would be 4 Pac Ten schools (40%) vs 5 SEC teams (40'ish%), considering alot of people consider the SEC the gold standard, that is impressive. Not sure why Aub2001 would state this as a fact that the SEC is vastly superior.

SCOTT,,,JEZZZZZZ

SCOTT,,,JEZZZZZZ

ARE you serious,,,come on bro..There is no debate between PAC 10 Puss and the SEC...You have quoted all these winnes,,,where are they now...Your fair weather winners is nothing...USC is the man,,the rest is nothing...HOPe and dreams of a good team,,what year will it be,,,who will surprise us next...I am confident in the power houses in the SEC because they will always be there and ALWAYS have,,,when was the last time U of A was there,,,are you serious,,what about ASU,,c mon 1996,,that was almost 10 years ago,,,,SEC is there every year,,year after year,,and now that Spurrier is at SC they will join the ranks of the elite and stay on a permanent basis,,,not good this year and then bad the next 3 or 4..... PAC 10 has ONE---ONE---ONE---One team... As a matter of fact all the scrubs in the SEC would beat the other 9 teams in the PAC 6 out of 10,,,VANDY included and they belong in the IVY league....

Your STATS are embarrasing,,,west coast isn't even FOOTBALL,,I am here to tell you because I played, and I live here in Phoenix and the programs here are a disgrace to FOOTBALL,,,TEXAS and on across the south, up north and east--- Michgan, OHio St, ND< miami, Fla St. BAMA, LSU, AUB, Vir. Tech, GOD MAN,,,you are silly..THE WEST COSAT IS OUT TO LUNCH BRO.... These kids could care less,,, Growing up on Pension Funds and living the good life,,,THERE IS NO HUNGER HERE.... ITS best leaving football where it belongs and that is TEXAS over to the east and DOWN SOUTH....

You are right,,this is not a DEBATE,,,YOU lose HANDS DOWN.... ASS UP and biting the PILLOW.... Sorry to be so blunt, but I KNOW... I have lived it,,,HAVE YOU....

So. Cal
Record in BCS (bowl alliance) Bowl Games since 1992 when the bowl system was officially changed....remember 92-97 the rose bowl wasn't considered a bcs game adn the old swc conf teams are considered big 12 teams, this system was catered for the sec and big 12 teams who were part of the bowl alliance

SEC
12-6
(.667 win %)

Pac 10
8-3
.727 win %
50% of the conf contributing to the wins
80% of the conf participating in the games
90% of the conf participating if you count the rose bowl from 92-97 (includes asu)
100% of the conf participating if texas doesn't politic it's way into the rose bowl over cal last year

Big 12
11-15
.423 win %

Big 10
7-6
.538 win %

These are FACTS and RECORDS....the Pac-10 has the highest win % of all the above conf.....yet i'm biased and uneducated? yet nobody cares or knows how to play football out here? these statements are completely assinine and idiotic......as i stated earlier in this whole debate, the big 12 is over-rated....but nobody mentions that, they just bag on the pac 10 as being weak, sissies, etc........

I see EVERY TEAM from the pac-10 being part of the bcs process...speaks to the depth of the conf.

I DONT see vandy, kentucky, miss, msu, ark, south carolina ANYWHERE....that's HALF the conf. not making a BCS game in the last 13 years.

Yeah - by the way how did the 5th best team in the Big 12 do against the pac 10 No 2 in that bowl game? You know, the team that you claim got jobbed out of the Rose Bowl?

the pac-10 #2 team was deflated to be there (and had no WR) while the 5th best big 12 team was estatic to be there......and cal did MUCH better than the Big 12 #1 vs the Pac-10 #1....by about 30 points.

address the point.....the big 12 has by far the WORST record amongst conf in BCS bowl games, yet gets invited to almost TWICE as many games as the weak pac-10 and the big 10 and 33% more than the SEC........WHY?

When that #2 Pac 10 team was healthy, they were 10 yards away from beating the #1 team in the country (USC) on the road in the Coliseum. FYI, USC has the nations #1 home winning streak AND #1 winning streak. CAL had USC's full attention and no way did USC look past CAL or not come ready to play. CAL was IMO a top 3 team in the country when "healthy."

Key on the words HEALTHY!

At the end of the year, CAL was a depleted team. In addition to the injuries, CAL was heartbroken "NOT" to play in the Rose Bowl. I wasn't surprised Cal lost. The team clearly didn't want to go and play Texas Tech when they felt they should be playing in the Rose Bowl against Michigan.

The reason the SEC has only one more victory in BCS games is because every BCS conference (5)gets one automatic bowl bid. Which means teams like Pitt and Oregon State sometimes get in a BCS bowl. So, even if the SEC has four teams that are better than anyone else from other conferences, they will only get two BCS bids at most. If you want, you can look at overall bowl records and see what you find. Especially if you TAKE USC OUT OF THE EQUATION!!! You will find that the Pac-10 is terrible...

I'm sorry guys!!!!

I did not realize Arizona went 12-1 in 1998, and won a bowl game all the way back in 1994!!! I was wrong. What a program!!! Quite a powerful resume, I'd say...(laughing)

The Pac-10 may be more powerful than i thought with heavyweights like AZ in the mix!

Scott, I love how games for Pac-10 teams only count if your entire team was HEALTHY.

You know, because other teams from other conferences don't get injuries.

not only are your posts and points idiotic....you are truly an idiot.....you address NOTHING. You bag on Arizona for a 12-1 season in 1998 and a bcs win in 1993......BUT ole miss split a national title......when was that in the 50's?

i'll end this stupid debate, you're right because you said so.
