Two if my favorite tidbits from the article:

So if USC's giving up 20.6 points and 348 yards per game looks bad, it might be because the Trojans don't get to play Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Baylor, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, Kansas, Mississippi, Nebraska or Mississippi State -- offenses ranking between 92nd and 112th in the nation, a nether region uninhabited by the Pac-10.

:mj07:

When asked about the defensive-minded SEC (or is it the offensively challenged SEC?), Bing's machismo doesn't seem to activate. "We don't watch teams we don't have to watch," he said.
Added junior linebacker Oscar Lua, "Every SEC team we've faced, we've beaten."

tastes great, less filling ...

being a west coast guy I believe pac-10 fball year in year out is pretty damn good ... that said, I kinda wonder why it gets so much guff--am I wrong but hasnt the pac-10 won more rings in all sports than any other conf? maybe Im mistaken and I know i'm too lazy to check ... but if I am right, why should fball be so crappy?

California plays pretty good HS football, and has a few people in it ... a city next to Seattle, Bellevue, has beaten de la salle and long beach poly with ease the last 2 years ... Dux and Beavs certainly have had their moments ...

like a i said, people are going to argue this forever, b/c since ive been on the board ive seen it ... I respect every conf. and the efforts the kids make, to say unequivocally this one sux blah blah really sounds foolish when I hear it ... I love the sec, big 10, big 12, acc, pac-10, and others im forgetting ...

bury the hatchet,
gregg :)

"For us to be allowing around 20 points a game, that's not a number that might make you real proud," Carroll said. "As a defensive coach, I don't like it very much. I like those scores like Alabama plays."

Ah, but here we enter the whole defensive chicken-and-egg debate, and Carroll can't resist a brief observation.

He notes that six Pac-10 teams rank in the nation's top 20 in scoring. Only one SEC team and two Big 12 teams rank in the top 25.

"That statement alone -- it's ridiculous that the [Pac-10] offenses are that good," Carroll said. "It isn't about the defenses. It's the offenses that are so proficient."

If the defenses were not allowing 20+ points per game, how "proficient" do you think the offenses would be? The chicken-and-egg analogy is a good one because it is difficult to say that the offenses are that good without noting that the defenses are that bad.

BTW, Ted Miller is ESPN's resident shill for the PAC-10 and his brand of editorialism will never be mistaken for journalism.

nice try judge ,but typically pac-10 teams equal their offenseive outputs when they play outside the conf while their defensive performances improve.....happens all the time.

the only reason i keep harping on this is because the pac-10 get's laughed at around here as a wac like conference by people from the midwest and east who never watch west coast games...iT'S THE ONLY POWER CONF THAT ROUTINELY GETS TRASHED....theose same people likely cheer on their favorite nfl team on sunday that is loaded with pac-10 players....kind of ironic.

and the sec offenses are average.......what's your point?

my point is only one conf is told that they suck and that they are a bunch of panzies etc.....the pac-10......

it's like the liberal media...report a lie long enough and it becomes accepted as the truth when in fact it's bs to start with.

I have never heard the Pac 10 in that light and I am stuck in SEC'dom. Now the Big East...I've heard talked about that way, but not the pac ten.

I agree, SEC offenses are average, over the whole conference, just average. The defenses are incredible.

That about sums it up.

DD...you're right...but around here the pac-10=the wac and the sec = the nfl.

take the big east out of the equation now and the 5 remaining bcs conf are very similar...although i'd say the big 12 is the worst of the 5 this season.

gjn - I know... I still can't figure out why the pac10 gets so much flack. The pac 10 is just as good as any other conference.

If the Pac 10 played only directional schools and home games for OOC they would increase their conf. # of wins. Pac 10 would get more teams ranked in the top 25 because you need WINS to be ranked. The only losses to Pac 10 teams would be during Pac 10 play. Thus giving the allusion of being such a powerful conf. that beats on each other. That is what the SEC has done for years. Up until the BCS, nobody really took notice. Now the SEC teams are paying the price all these years because the BCS takes notice.

Remember, the elite teams in the SEC are NEVER challenged by the bottom half of the conf. Bottom dwellers + $hit OOC = A LOT OF WINS! I think only 4-5 teams in the SEC have won conf. title in the last 10 years. 9/10 Pac 10 teams have won share of the conf. title in the Pac 10 in the last 11 years. SEC has $hit teams that stay $HIT TEAMS. The Pac 10 doesn't.

Look at this site. NOBODY who follows the SEC can make a strong argument for them being superior. There argument is this. "SEC IS SUPERIOR BECAUSE I SAY SO"

Oh yeah, the Pac 10 being in the west coast plays a part as well. Only USC is respected nationally.
