RED SOX NOTEBOOK
The Red Sox yesterday answered the $200,000 question: Will David Cone get the two more starts he needs to reach 25 for the season, triggering a $200,000 payment under his incentive-laden contract?
The answer is yes, his stiff shoulder permitting. Cone, who missed his turn in the rotation Saturday, will start tonight in the opener of a three-game series against the Devil Rays at Tampa Bay. And he is scheduled to pitch the season finale Saturday in Baltimore, when Cal Ripken plays the last game of his career.
The game also could be Cone's last, if he decides after the season to retire. Manager Joe Kerrigan apparently gave no thought to costing the Sox, who have tried to block a couple of players from reaching incentive-based milestones in the final days of a season.
''I think it would be good for baseball,'' Kerrigan said of Cone starting in Ripken's farewell game. ''And I think David would enjoy that.''
Cone, who said he would be honored to start Saturday, is a millionaire many times over and was not focused on the money.
''I'm aware of it,'' he said before Kerrigan announced his decision, ''but I'm not going to pitch just for the sake of attaining an incentive clause. I would rather try to finish on a strong note and have a good start.''
Kerrigan tapped Cone for the two starts after the pitcher felt strong enough in a throwing session yesterday to try it. If Cone is able to pitch both games, the Sox appear to be set on their starters for the five other remaining games: Casey Fossum, Derek Lowe , Hideo Nomo , Frank Castillo , and probably Sun Woo Kim.
