Eddie my man, long time no talkie.

I am coming up to Cincinnati next month for an interview. If you can bear 30 seconds of seriousness (might be tough for you, I know it's a weekend), I have a question for you.

Obviously it's not easy to get to know a city in a weekend, but could you name a few things I can do up there (prob a Sat-Mon) that you think would be worthwhile?

Don't worry about seeing crackwhores, i'm sure I'll see my fill at the hospital.

Thanks in advance.

Ed's busy suing drug companies so that after they lay people off, they can't afford to give free medicines away to hurricane victims

Sorry for the late response.

Let me know the weekend you'll be here and what you want to do. I mean if its bars and babes, let me know your approximate age and I'll try to steer you in the right direction. 65 is right about the Beast at Kings Island. Also Octoberfest is happening in several weeks and thats usually fun.

Blind Lemon and other bars in the Mt. Adams area was my favorite area in Cincy to hang out when I lived there (Covington, KY)

Also, if you are more looking for slower pace, the aquarium in Covington (or one of the other KY towns on the border) is really incredible. I believe at one time it was the largest all-salt water aquarium in the country.

Most people around there will steer you to Montgomery Inn for ribs which are really good. Another staple there is the great divider of Skyline or Gold Star Chili. I much prefer Gold Star over Skyline.

Also there is a nice restaurant on the KY bank of river right across from Cynergy, but I don't remember the name. It was always good eats.

Thanks for the replies, I'll be up there the weekend of Oct 22/23. I'll be up with the fiance, but wouldn't mind checking out some bars while there. I'm 26, she's 24. I guess we're just trying to get a feel for the city to determine if it's a place I can live/work for 2 years and not go crazy.

I'm sure Eddie will chalk this up to me being a dumb redneck neo-con, but I absolutely hated living there. It seemed like the people from Cincy had a huge chip on their shoulder.

Just like anywhere, though, if you get in with some good people then it will be great. I just have never had a problem meeting people in all the places that I have lived until I was there.

I have heard similar reviews from most people that have lived there that weren't from there, but that could be chalked up to them being similar to me.

Come on Dawg:

Just because you hated living in Cincinnati does not make you a dumb, redneck neo-con. There are many other reasons you are a dumb, redneck neo-con. Actually, I'm not a big fan of the Queen City either but for a lot of reasons I'll probably be here for the duration.

Okay, Saint. Mid 20's with girlfriend in hand. Lets see. October 22 & 23. Don't think the Reds will make it to the series this year, so thats out. If your here on the 23rd and don't have to fly out until that evening, I suggest you take in the Bengals-Steelers game at PBS. 1:00 game, sold out and tickets will be tough to come by as a ton of Steerlers fans come down for that game.

I have season tix but will be going. If I hear of anything (I really doubt it though) I will let you know. That time of year, the weather around here is usually great, fall colors etc. I don't think Kings Island is open then. However, you may want to check that out if your into an amusement park.

If your looking around the city for places to live, as a young couple without kids, I would suggest Hyde Park, Clifton, or Mt. Adams. Close to entertainment but schools suck. Okay, now to the subject I know too well, drinking and dining.

Downtown: Montogmery Inn on the river (great ribs);
Nicholsons, (Friday after work drinks only);
Ruby's (great steaks but bring loads of cash)

Hyde Park: Arthurs (drinks with okay food hamburgers and stuff) great place however to get a local feel for the populace;
Tellers: Next door to Arthurs. (swishy crowd about your age)

By the way the Bearcats (UC) are playing at Nippert Stadium on campus Saturday night at 7:00. I think its Connecticut. Believe me, no problem getting tickets for that one. If your intererted, I know I can help you out. UC is not a big football school although I think with Bobby gone, there may be some interest developing.

Newport, Kentucky: Right across river from downtown. Go to Newport on the Levee. Recently built restaurant/bar/movie theatre complex. Will be lively on weekends. I think every town has one of these complexes so there will be nothing unique about it. Will be a lot of people though.

The Dawg man is right about Mt. Adams and especially the Blind Lemon. Small bar only, patio with open pit fireplace if the weather is cool. Accoustic guitarist and expensive drinks. But wonderful after dinner spot where you can cozy up to the soon-to-be Mrs. and tell her about all the money your going to make when you pull all those healty teeth over the course of your professional career.

Downtown doesn't do much after the Happy hour crowd leaves. I'd get to Mt. Adams (lots of bars in addition to the Blind Lemon) or Hyde Park. Oh yeah, if your into Thai food, the Teak in Mt. Adams is wonderful. Good sushi and pad thai(?)

Other restaurants for eating only Embers in Montgomery (eastern suburb also the original Montgomery Inn is there with the ribs) and Tinks in Clifton (near UC's campus) in a cool part of the city called the gas light district.

Thats my take on Cincinnati. For singles looking for a mate this town has deservedly so been ranked near the bottom. However, if you already have someone and want to raise a family its an okay midwestern city, easy to get around and relatively safe. By the way, this is conservative central. I am the lone voice of reason.

maybe that's why a centrist like me hated it so much. ;)

I did forget about Hyde Park. This is a great little area to go out in. I thik Eddie hit it on the head about being single in Cincy. That may be why I didn't like it at all. The number of decent looking girls there is slim compared to other bigger cities.

The Teak has really good sushi. I never tried their Thai entrees.

"Octoberfest"
Hell I didn't know Cinnci had any German population--might join you there for some bratwurst or weinersnitzel :)

Only better food I've found was Hill Day in St Loius where the Italian population put on a festival.

Wayne:

I believe that Cincinnati's Oktoberfest is the 2nd largest in the world next too Munichs'. Hell, I'm not German so what do I know. Anyway, they block off Fifth Street downtown for the weekend, its always held in September, and sell overpriced, watered down draught beer with a bunch of closet gay west side dutch guys walking around in leiderhosen (?).

Its jammed with falling-down, hammered, tee-shirted, mid twenty types with five day beards stumbling around spilling beer on everyone shouting "I love George Bush." You know, his base. Sorry I just had to get a shot in.

Actually if you ever get up here, I'll buy you one at Nicholsons or at a Bengals game.

Eddie and dawgball-

Thanks for taking the time to post all of that info...should be very helpful. I'll let you know the places I end up checking out. If I match up there it's a 2 year program so it's not a permanent move, but I have no choice in the matter since it's picked via a match system (if you don't know what it is, kind of hard to explain...sororitiies use it).

Anyways thanks for all of the suggestions, we will definitely check some of that out.

Granted German crowds can be a little redneck--last one I attended at parents home which is very German community in Mo-I was standing by curb watching 2 that had too much to drink go at it and cop comes up and sprays me in the face with mace--was some weak shit like pepperment spray but still pissed me off--however he did say he was sorry--then asked me why I thought his mace was ineffective.I told maybe Andy didn't issue the real stuff--he proceeded to give me this clueless look. :)

Dave,
What sorority are you in that uses this match system you speak of.

Eddie,
Nice post, well thought out and friendly. I 'm impressed. Not really, I just am not feeling well right now and not thinking straight. By the way you sure those closet gays are dutch, could be swedes. Still Bush fans though........ugh
