Well even the Dems in Congress are questioning Panetta's appointment. Surely PE Obama can find someone more qualified to run the CIA. Whats Jack Bauer doing?

Obama Wants Journalist Gupta for Surgeon General

In a scene from CNN's "Planet in Peril," Dr. Sanjay Gupta stands in a body of water in Africa.

By Howard Kurtz
President-elect Barack Obama has offered the job of surgeon general to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the neurosurgeon and correspondent for CNN and CBS, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

Gupta has told administration officials that he wants the job, and the final vetting process is under way. He has asked for a few days to figure out the financial and logistical details of moving his family from Atlanta to Washington but is expected to accept the offer.

When reached for comment today, Gupta did not deny the account but declined to comment.

The offer followed a two-hour Chicago meeting in November with Obama, who said that Gupta could be the highest-profile surgeon general in history and would have an expanded role in providing health policy advice, the sources said. Gupta later spoke with Tom Daschle, Obama's White House health czar and nominee for Health and Human Services secretary, and other advisers to the president-elect.

The Michigan-born son of Indian and Pakistani parents, Gupta has always been drawn to health policy. He was a White House fellow in the late 1990s, writing speeches and crafting policy for Hillary Clinton. His appointment would give the administration a prominent official of Southwest Asian descent and a skilled television spokesman.

Gupta, who hosts "House Call" on CNN, has discussed the job offer with his bosses at CBS and CNN to make sure he could be released from his contractual obligations, the sources said.

His role as journalist and physician have sometimes overlapped. During the 2003 Iraq invasion, Gupta was embedded with a Navy unit called Devil Docs and, while covering its mission, performed brain surgery five times, the first of which was on a 2-year-old Iraqi boy.

Gupta's only hesitation in taking the post is said to involve the financial impact on his pregnant wife and two children if he gives up his lucrative medical and journalistic careers. But he is expected to accept the position within days

Brilliant pick here with Gupta

GO OBAMA !

Weak choice. This guy is a washed up political hack and Obama could have done much better. Like AR, I think his choices have been good so far but this is a head scratcher. If he wanted a manager he should have gotten a polished CEO.

Al Qaeda message blames Obama, Egypt for Gaza violenceStory Highlights
Ten-minute message delivered by Ayman al-Zawahiri, a native of Egypt

In address, al-Zawahiri says violence a "gift" from Obama before he takes office

The message, on various Islamist Web sites, urges militants to rally against Israel

In Obama's first public reaction to the violence, he says he is "deeply concerned"

(CNN) -- An audio message reportedly from al Qaeda's deputy chief vows revenge for Israel's air and ground assault on Gaza and calls the Jewish state's actions against Hamas militants "a gift" from U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.

An Al-Jazeera broadcast in January 2007 shows al-Zawahiri speaking in an online video message.

The speaker, identified as Ayman al-Zawahiri, addresses Muslims in Gaza. He said the violence "is one part of a series of a crusade war against Islam and these air strikes are a gift from Obama before he takes office, and (Egyptian President) Hosni Mubarak, that traitor, is the main partner in your siege and killing."

The message, posted Tuesday on various Islamist Web sites with a picture of al-Zawahiri next to an image of a wounded child, urges militants to rally against Israel.

"My Muslim brothers and mujahedeens in Gaza and all over Palestine, with the help of God we are with you in the battle, we will direct our strikes against the crusader Jewish coalition wherever we can."

The 10-minute message also address Muslims worldwide, claiming that Obama was portrayed as "the savior who will come and change American policy" during the U.S. election but is now "killing your brothers and sisters in Gaza without mercy or even pity."

Obama's transition team did not immediately respond to the message. Earlier Tuesday, the president-elect said he was "deeply concerned" about the loss of life in Gaza and Israel, and he promised to make the issue a top priority in his administration.

It was Obama's first public reaction to the ongoing fighting between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza, which began with Israeli air strikes 11 days ago. He reiterated that only one president can speak for the United States at a time.

Special report: Gaza crisis
"Starting at the beginning of our administration, we are going to engage effectively and consistently to try to resolve the conflicts that exist in the Middle East," Obama said.

CNN Senior International Correspondent Nic Robertson said the al Qaeda message speaks to al-Zawahiri's cause in two ways: It bashes the new U.S. president before he takes office and it criticizes Mubarak, who has drawn al-Zawahiri's ire for not allowing goods and aid through Egypt's border with Gaza.

Al-Zawahiri is a native of Egypt who has served jail time there.

Robertson, who is reporting from the Israeli-Gaza border, noted on CNN's "Situation Room" that al-Zawahiri got the message out quickly -- "within 12 days, that's very fast." He said that indicated "there's many issues there that are dear to him."

Remember when DTB was posting that Obama is a muslim.

now they are blaming Obama for shit before he even takes over.

up until this point, i liked all of obama's choices except the one for the attorney general...but this is by far the worst...you need an intelligence man in this post, not a manager...

1st Al would like to say congrats on fine capping of bowls 14-5 is strong as ajax!:toast:

On subject of Panetta--agree with you and Roger the worst appointment by far. I think he would be suited for lots of spots but not this one. I don't mind O filling most positions with Clinton retreads(change ?) but would not opt for them in intelligence sector considering we had none during those years.

--also agree I too have been pleasantly surprised with many of O's appointments--and in general would give him a grade B.

Have also been pleasantly surprised by him reversal on key issues of taxes-Fisa-Iraq(especially corp taxes). Appears his one on one interview with GW on Nov 10th may have been his most productive. :)

I will reserve final grading on his promise to cut pork-and obsolete gov agencies (spending).
Somehow his projections so far of adding 600,000 gov jobs--giving unemployment benefits to part time workers--increased healthcare benefits etc--doesn't bode well with reducing spending.

Side notes on other issue--would like to parlay Burris being seated in the end and Reid losing his seat in senate next election.

Once ex panther Brown and black caucus played the race card--the outcome was inevitable.

"the bunker"
i think given the richardson debacle....and the fact that panetta is squeeky-clean and pretty liberal.....i figure that bock wanted to throw a bone to the the extreme liberal wing of the party because they were so upset by necessary evils like coerced interrogation and other tough but necessary issues that liberals love to wring their hands over....trying to appease the base...partucularly after he decided to keep gates and most of the bush war team...

don`t get me wrong...by all accounts panetta`s an extremely bright guy...and well liked in washington by libs and conservatives alike...a good dude...

what amazes me is that panetta is another clinton sycophant....

there are several things going on here...obama is naming numerous clintonistas to his cabinet...maybe because he now realizes what he`s gotten himself into....the scope and magnitude of the issues he will have to deal with...

maybe he feels he needs to have people around him that have actually already been there...

at the same time,i don`t believe for a second that the richardson fiasco came to light by accident....he stabbed hillary in the back during the primaries....and it`s a fact that hillary still has some friends in the msm...and a long memory..

bock, imo,is straddling a barbed wire fence by taking on so many clintonites....

bush kept many clinton peeps on in the cia and in u.s. attorney positions and he paid dearly for it...

watch your back,bock...
