NCAA YTD: 3-6 (-3.1*)
Iowa(-22) over Syracuse (1*)
- - Almost to a man, from HC Ferentz on down, the company line from the Hawkeyes after the N.Ill game was that four areas, running the ball, stopping the run, protecting the football and forcing turnovers, "are pretty important around here, and we were strong in all those areas", but the whole picture was far short of our expectations, beginning with special teams, although special teams probably provided the decisive spark in the game . . . A buzz for months about a team operating under the radar. A buzz all day before the third true night game in Kinnick history . . . I've capped enough Orange football to recognize they are not setting on what would typically be a big bounceback spot for their fortunes . . . Syracuse is about to get spanked. Will it be enough to cover the number? Still operating seriously under the radar is the call here.

Penn State(-16) over Notre Dame (1*)

GLNext Week:
Missouri(-6) over Missippi (1*)
- - Immediate positives came out of their battle with Illinois, while Ole Miss did enough to gain a 1-0 foothold on their season.
Penn State(-16) over Notre Dame (1*)
- - It looks to me like the visitor is taking a knife to a gun fight . . . The one thing from the opener that Paterno has to ride his team about is their getting off to a slow start before adjusting and then torching an opponent hell bent on slowing down the run.
Odds and Ends: Have the revised clock rules improved the chances of huge favorites covering the number?
