The New England Patriots announced today that they have utilized their 2009 franchise designation on quarterback Matt Cassel.

The decision to do so is hardly unexpected and gives the club two main options: They can trade the 26-year-old quarterback if all continues to go well with Tom Brady's rehabilitation from a knee injury, or they can keep him.

The cost of the franchise tag (the average of the top five highest-paid players at a given position) on Cassel is a one-year tender for $14.65 million, according to the transition and franchise tag numbers released Jan. 30 by the NFL Players Association.

Since the franchise tenders are guaranteed, Cassel would count more against the cap than Brady, who is scheduled to carry a cap charge of $14.62 million for 2009. Brady is slated to have a $5 million base salary in 2009 and is due a $3 million roster bonus, so Cassel's take-home pay for '09 would also be more than Brady's.

There is a strong possibility the Patriots will trade Cassel, though Patriots coach Bill Belichick did not indicate that as an option in his comment in today's press release.

"Matt has been a pleasure to coach his entire career and last season in particular, when his years of hard work and commitment resulted in a most impressive performance," said Belichick. "We look forward to working with Matt again in 2009."

Today was the first day teams can designate franchise and transition players.

The 26-year-old Cassel, who made 15 starts after Brady's injury, completed 63.4 percent of his passes and threw for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

He becomes the first offensive player and just the fourth Patriot to be franchised by the team, joining Adam Vinatieri (2002 and 2005), Tebucky Jones (2003) and Asante Samuel (2007).

The one New England should trade is Tom Brady.

Someone will take a chance big time on him.

Offer up some solid draft picks like that trade in the H Walker deal Dallas did.

I think Dallas would be a good fit. Let Romo ride the bench for awhile.

"TOM BRADY WILL NEVER PLAY AGAIN"...
Inside Sports
Friday, 16 January 2009
By Mike Marzano
A SportsImproper.com Exclusive
(As first reported by SportsImproper.com)

A top orthopedic surgeon with knowledge of Tom Brady?s injury and subsequent troubled knee surgery says the NFL superstar will never play again.
?(His career) is dead,? the physician told sportsimproper.com exclusively. ?It?s over ? plain and simple,?

A second orthopedic surgeon, while not predicting an end to the Patriots QB?s career, was nevertheless grim: ?A lot of times ? the motion doesn't come back. In Brady's case, with the infection, you wonder if the graft is strong enough and whether his knee will occasionally buckle, collapse or re-tear."

Both physicians asked their names not be used, as neither is authorized to speak on the case. But both are widely regarded orthopedic specialists who have worked on many injuries similar to Brady?s and who have been published in some of the top medical journals in this field.

?The more surgery a person has, the worse he will be,? the first surgeon told our reporter. ?The same will be true for Brady. He will never be the same; he will never be able to play again. Sad but true. But in these types of operations, if it isn?t done right the first time, then it?s over.?

Brady was hurt in the Patriots? season opener, Sept. 7, against the Kansas City Chiefs. About halfway through the first quarter, Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard fell on Brady?s left knee just as the New England QB released the ball. Brady went down awkwardly and was immediately in a lot of pain.

?I saw the ball was still in his hands and I tried to get to him,? Pollard was quoted as saying later. ?But I couldn't get up. So I just tried to grab him. I know Brady was in a lot of pain. When you hear a scream, you know that."

The diagnosis came following the game: Brady had torn both his ACL and MCL. He would be out for the season.

The tears were repaired on Oct. 6, some 29 days after the injury occurred. But then infection set in and according to many reports, Brady had to go back under the knife three more times ?to clean and test the wound.?

Brady had the original surgery done in California by a doctor his family favored, allegedly against the Patriots? wishes, although the team vehemently denies such a scenario.
But this aspect was also troublesome to the first surgeon who talked to sportsimproper.com, especially the secrecy that surrounded reports of Brady?s subsequent post-operation infection.

?It was all very secretive,? the physician source said. ?And I found all the speculation (troubling). It tells me that nobody really knows what happened.?

The risk of another infection could also spell doom for Brady. As the second surgeon told us: ?If there?s another infection and the patellar tendon graft (which is used to replace the ACL) is compromised, that could cause him to miss significant time next season.

?In any case, it truly takes a year for the ligaments and surrounding muscles to function as a real unit again. Some guys may suggest six months, but in reality it is a year plus.?

Brady has been back working out at Gillette Stadium under the watchful eye of the Patriots medical staff, but nobody is offering much in the way of timetables and predictions.

According to Boston.com, Patriots owner Robert Kraft did say recently that Brady has "an infectious way of impacting people, so we're happy that he's back and getting himself into good shape."

To that, one close observer said: ??Infectious?? That?s an interesting choice of words.?

Yeah, my stupidity hahah...great article you posted by the way. And they franchised Cassel cause they know teams will be interested in him. So if a team signs him they have to give up FIRST ROUND draft picks to the Patriots.

That isnt a reason to franchise him -you could trade him. Now they are on the hook for $14 million guaranteed for one season- which NOBODY would give him. You only do that if you (a) dont think Brady will be back for this season(which still puts 30% of your cap money at QB) or (b) you plan to trade Brady or (c) you think Brady is done.

In theory (D) is to trade Cassell, but that wont happen unless his contract is redone with a long term deal with about 25-30 million guartanteed and to a team where he is willing to go. Possible but unlikely - and if you are NE how can you do that with Brady's status uncertain?

They need cassel until brady is once again 100%. They may keep him for the entire season just to play it safe, but I think he will go before the trade deadline. If they didn't franchise him someone would have definitely signed him without any compensation to the patriots because hes an unrestricted free agent.

With a tag and trade the team doesn't have to takeover the franchise tag contract..a new contract is negotiated with cassell, and the patriots get compensated with a player or a first or second round draft pick.

Tagging him was the best move they could make it secures the position for as long as they need and makes compensation possible once the patriots are ready to trade.

Under a mask.
No brainer tag Cassel.A trade could be worked out for a player for player senerio.I heard that KC has interest for Cassel with Gonzalez name mentioned.

If that happens who knows. As far as the article on Brady.Sounds like a eye catching article.Would sell alot to the public. In other words its not convincing enough.
