The hits just keep on coming for New England & BB.

Senator Specter Says the Patriots Taped the Steelers Twice During 2004 Season
Posted Feb 13th 2008 7:39PM by Ryan Wilson

Well, it looks like Senator Arlen Specter didn't get around to talking about the NFL's antitrust exemption during today's meet-and-greet with commissioner Roger Goodell. As Michael David Smith wrote earlier, Specter learned that the Patriots have been videotaping opponents since 2000, something that wasn't clear when the league concluded its investigation in September.

In a post-meeting press conference, Specter elaborated. The senator said that "there were notes showing that the Steelers games had been taped." Specifically, two contests during the 2004 season: one on Oct. 31, and the other, the AFC Championship, on Jan. 27.

A couple of things worth pointing out: Pittsburgh smoked the Patriots in the first meeting, 34-20, sacking Tom Brady four times and picking him off twice. Three months later, the two teams met in the conference finals. Unsurprisingly (in hindsight), the Patriots won 41-27, and Brady, sacked just twice in the rematch, finished 14 of 21 for 207 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Did New England gain an advantage from having videotaped Pittsburgh during the teams' first meeting? There isn't enough evidence to say that, yes, unequivocally the Patriots won because they had the Steelers' defensive signals. But it would also be na?ve to suggest that having access to that information had no bearing on the outcome. If that were true, Matthew Estrella (and Matt Walsh before him) wouldn't have had a job.

Either way, this doesn't do much for the Patriots' legacy as one of the best teams in NFL history, and it doesn't do much for Roger Goodell's credibility.

I also wonder if Bill Cowher might want to reconsider his earlier thoughts on the Steelers' other AFC Championship game against the Patriots.

The ones that really suffer are the players.
Its to bad that someone with your mantality, and yes I know there out there are eating this up.

Lets just forget that a game was played on the field and that they had nothing to do with the Patriots sucess. The game still had to be played,no matter how you slice.

Like I stated, the players are the ones that suffer and thats unfortunate.

Did I say I blame the players? I blame BB & all his coaches. Nonetheless BB represents the New England Pats, your owner, your fans & your players have all stuck by him. Therefore they are guilty by association.

The games had to be played sure, but the fans & the oppenents had/have a right to have them played fairly.

When this is all said & done the Patriots are going to bare a heavy shameful burden that will stick w/ the franchise for a good long time.

Everything thing your team has accomplished since 2000 is tainted....

I dont wanna get into aback in forth with you on this issue, cause for me its a non-issue.
Theyve had some great campains this year being one of them.Taping runs rampant in the league.

Like I stated the players suffer thru all this, there accomplishments ,with arnt tainted suffer and its unfortunate.

So many things in sports can be giving a tainted conterversy to them examples.

The Chicago Bulls,Jordan could just walk to the basket and score while traveling ,during the championship seasons its rigged, its tainted,

The Ref that fixed games last year in NBA,who won last years NBA champ?think was Spurs.
Tainted championship.

Franco Harris illegal forward pass vs Oakland went on to win SB,Tainted.

Denvers back to back championships were known to cheat aggressivly esp. illegal blocks that they got away with ,not to mention who knows what shannahan was taping ,tainted.

Im not gonna lose sleep over what you and your kind are selling trust me on that one.
No matter what you think of BB,the Pats the owner or the fans.

Pittsburgh didnt win the Super Bowl the year of Franco's catch....

regardless none of the things you listed come anywhere near what the Pats did...simple intentional cheating isnt the same as a bad call by an official ...

OK ill admit,I was reaching in some areas.
This whole thing is a smear campain against the Pats.Read the follow-up that 3seconds just posted.

It actually exposes how stupid this whole thing is.
Interestingly enough,Ive done some homework on this matter. Why are Dallas fans so uptight about this.

Losen your underpants, you guys have a great franchise, its not a competition to what one is better. When Denver and SF illegally went over the salary cap ,no-one said anything, and Denver did it during a SB season.

There punishment was more servere to.
My opinion is this. Its a smear campain against BB and company no matter how you look at it!!

...ok...so New England tape...well, what exactly?

The coaching staff actually calling the plays?
(Don't the coaches cover their mouths with the play sheets for a reason??)
...so therefore NE now effectively know the opp's playbook??

Still not sure how that helps...unless you have a real time camera/video so you can see what they are calling at the time...

Otherwise they just may aswell be watching game film like everyone else?

Steelers consider Spygate 'non-issue'

Steelers consider Spygate 'non-issue'

Posted: Friday February 15, 2008 3:29PM

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The New England Patriots' taping of opposing coaches' signals did not affect the outcome of games against the Steelers, including two AFC Championship games, Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said Friday.

"We consider the tapes of our coaching staff during our games against the New England Patriots to be a non-issue," Rooney said in a statement. "In our opinion, they had no impact on the results of those games."

Rooney's comments were fueled by remarks Thursday by U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who has questioned whether the NFL has properly handled allegations that Patriots coach Bill Belichick had assistants videotape opponents' signals.

NFL officials indicate the Patriots taped the Steelers' coaches during AFC Championship games at the end of the 2001 and 2004 seasons, and during regular-season games in 2002 and 2004, Specter said. The Steelers lost all but the 2004 regular-season game.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell fined Belichick $500,000 and the Patriots $250,000 and docked the team a first-round draft pick.

Specter has criticized Goodell for destroying the tapes after the league's internal investigation.

But Rooney said Goodell and the league took the "appropriate action" in punishing the Patriots.

"We are confident that the commissioner has taken appropriate action in his investigation of this matter, and will do so again if new information arises which requires further investigation and/or discipline," Rooney said

Rusty,

You are right its not a competition between Dallas & New England as franchise cause Dallas is on another level above N.E.

Only Pittsburgh & SF are on the Cowboys level, on top of the mountain.

To add fuel to your reply.Lets say for sake of argument they did videotape illegally, wouldnt defense change up signals and fronts during games??What good would it matter? Sorry 3seconds,im not going away, and thanks for reneforcements!!

I went to my daughters basketball game tonite.
She cheers for a tech school. They have a rivalry game against a better school each year.

To make long story short, both teams won there seperate conferances, but tech lost in overtime.
Non calls were a factor all nite going against the smaller tech school. In matter of fact, just before the end of regulation Tech was fouled plain as day, with no foul called.Yes the game was played on the road. One free throw would of ended game.

My pt. is this all this BS that 3 seconds brings up,hides all the true stuff that should be adresed, and thats non-calls and home field favortism, hows that not so called cheating!! :nono: Refs hgold the key ,just like so many other things, sorry but you really are pathetic!!!

Keep making it personal w/ the name calling.

I am now starting to question your basic intelligence. Foul calls in a basketball game are no where even remotely close to blantant & willful cheating the Pats engaged in since 2000. It would be closely tied to if the opposition coach payed would have went to your teams practice in disguise. This is oranges & apples though.

I dont need to argue with you. I have already won. The vast majority of America now realizes the depth of the Pats wrong doing. They will never be looked upon again w/o spygate & the cheating being a major part of it. If you think otherwise I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you. :142smilie

Congrats though...you have become the most shamed franchise in the NFL. Its only going to get worse from here on out.

Seriously...can a non-anti-NE person please explain it fully?

Tell me in one paragraph (or less :D) how video-taping the opposition coaching staff could possibly give you an unfair advantage??

Does (did!) Bill Cower (sp?) shake his left leg every time they were going to run a corner blitz?

Does Mangini scratch his right earlobe while flaring a nostril when a LB comes on a zone blitz??

Hey, I understand it's against league rules...and therefore is 'cheating'...but serously...

...yet here it is in Congress??!! Good lord.

...and as for that other rediculous post (well, subject anyway!)...100 Mil??!! LMAO!!

How about suing ther own security for letting it be taped?
How do teams who aren't 'lucky' enough to have domes fare??

It happens every week over here in the AFL. A team will have a "closed" session, yet almost inevitably some film will emerge, or at least EVERYONE know's of injuries/late withdrawals etc.

I'm struggling to decide which is stupider...seemingly the whole country believing NE are the only team doing it...or every other team for not doing it!!

What a massive, over-blown joke this is becoming.
