that is a harsh penalty, wow...:sadwave:
As harsh as the serial rape of young boys?
This is an incredibly complex problem and as with all complex problems, the NCAA completely screwed this up.
This penalty amounts to nothing more than penalizing the people who are currently there, who had nothing to do with this. Unlike a politician, though, I have my own recommendation for the punishment.
There are a lot of kids at USC that are being punished by not going to bowls and they didn't have anything to do with Reggie Bush's parents getting a house for free. Did you say anything about those kids.
Unfortunately when some people screw up with their decisions others have to pay as well. Should we just excuse adults for crimes when they have kids so those kids won't have to suffer while their parent is in prison?
These kids in all reality aren't losing anything. They can still play football and they still get the most important part and that's a free education. Using them to say this shouldn't have happened is a cop out.
What happened at PSU had nothing to do with football, it is instead a complete failure of an institution of higher learning run by adults.
Except the difference is USC was doing things that gave them a competitive advantage. What happened at PSU had nothing to do with football, it is instead a complete failure of an institution of higher learning run by adults.
When teams cheat to get ahead, you give them penalties to put them at a competitive disadvantage. When institutions allow for child rape to knowingly take place on their campus, you shut them down and put people in jail.

Penn State did something in not doing anything. I would agrue it did help their football program because it avoided bad press during those year which would or could have hurt recruiting.
Finally!
I haven't heard a single sports commentator mention this point and it's the obvious!
So if Sandusky was a retired science professor instead of a football coach, he would have been allowed to have access to the facilities after the allegations and all the incidents were brought to the administrators attention? I really have a hard time believing many could actually convince themselves that would be the case.
It did have to do with football. Were they cheating on the field or even off the field in recruiting? No. However, it is clear the football program was intertwined and the power that program has at that institution.
