Pepsi 500 Preview

The last time we visited the scenic landscape of beautiful Fontana, California for a NASCAR Sprint Cup race was a week after the season opening Daytona 500. At that juncture, Matt Kenseth had won two races in a row and it looked like Roush-Fenway Racing was going to dominate the year and win their third Championship.

Why wouldn?t we think that? The year prior, Carl Edwards had won nine races finishing a close second to Jimmie Johnson for the Championship. Greg Biffle charged hard in the Chase getting two wins and finishing third in points. Kenseth had made his fifth Chase in a row, and setting 2009 a blaze with two straight wins was unheard of. Even the youngster on the team, David Ragan, had a bright future in store because he barely missed the Chase and finished 13th.

Here we are now, 28 races later, and Carl Edwards doesn?t have a single win which would make him the biggest drop off in wins from one season to the next by a full time driver if he doesn?t win at least three more in the next seven races.

Greg Biffle has ran well, but still doesn?t have a win. Matt Kenseth, who started so fast, failed to miss the Chase for the first time in his career. David Ragan, for his climb up the ladder, has turned 2009 into a disaster sitting 31st in points just ahead of Paul Menard and Robby Gordon.

Needless to say, something has gone wrong in the Roush stable and we haven?t even discussed Jamie McMurray.

However, if there is one track that can get the Roush group going, California Speedway is it. Since 1998, Five different Roush drivers have won seven times. Of those drivers, Kenseth leads the way with three wins.

Last week at Kansas, Kenseth had a turnaround despite a DNF. During the final practice sessions for the race on Saturday, he had top-3 times in both practices which was a major change of pace because Kenseth hasn?t been fast in any practice on any track all season.

Whatever they did made his car go faster and may be enough reason to think he may be able to duplicate what he did in February in Fontana.

Greg Biffle had a great run last week at Kansas finishing third and in this race last season he finished second. In the first race run there this season, Biffle finished fourth. Despite his good finish last week, he still lost a position in points to Jeff Gordon he finished just ahead of him. However, Biffle still feels pretty confident coming into this weeks race.

"I have always loved racing at California,' said Biffle. ?I think we could have won the last two races there. We just ran out of time last fall and I made a mistake in the pits earlier this year. The 3M team is at the top of their game and we should have had the win last weekend at Kansas. I made a decision to put on four tires at the end and it didn?t work out for us. I guess the way I?m looking at this weekend is that I owe these guys one, so I?m going to do everything I can to get the 16 car into victory lane."

Biffle has one win and four top-5 finishes at California. Earlier this season at California, Biffle was running the fastest laps on the track in second place and catching the leader when he stopped on the front changer?s air hose during a late-race pit stop. He restarted 11th with 35 laps to go and finished fourth.

Look for Biffle to have similar results this week, if not better.

Carl Edwards is the mystery driver of them all. How he fallen so far while using many of the same chassis? from last season?s fantastic run is beyond anyone?s estimation. He hasn?t even come close to contending for a win. It?s not as and a fall as Ragan?s, but it could be considered worse just because of what he did last season. All year it seems like Edwards is battling for 11th place.

The winner of this race the last two seasons has been Jimmie Johnson. This is the site of El Cajon, CA native Johnson?s first career win. In 13 career starts, he has won three times. He had a little trouble after the last pit stop last week and saw him finish ninth after leading 53 laps on the day. He ended up losing eight points to current leader Mark Martin, sitting 18 points behind.

This week, Johnson is going to inducted into the California Speedway?s ?Walk of Fame?, whatever that is. The honor comes for his excellence on the speedway where his three wins are tied with Kenseth and Jeff Gordon in all-time tracks wins.

Johnson will look to get win number four this week using the same chassis that he won at Indianapolis with in July.

Jeff Gordon won the first race ever on the track and has three wins overall in his 18 starts. He finished second in the first race there this season, just like he did last week.

"I feel like our mile and a half program has really improved this year," said Gordon.

"California was a track earlier in the year where I felt like we let one slip away. And I'm hoping that we can get that one back the next time we go." With the way that he has ran on 1.5 and 2-mile tracks this season, Gordon could again be a good choice to win this week.

Juan Pablo Montoya used his third straight brand new chassis in the Chase last week at Kansas and finished fourth. The guy has completely transformed into a rock-solid NASCAR driver along with finally getting some good equipment. He currently sits third in points and with his run last week should be considered a real candidate to win.

"Three top-five finishes in the first three Chase races is huge, you know," Montoya said. "And it's what we need to do every weekend. A championship is beating everybody else. We come here to race and to win races and to win races you've got to beat everyone else. We know that we've got good cars. We know we're in a very good position but at the end of the day it's 10 races."

I?ve always been dismissive about his chances just because of his mediocre past in the series, but I have flip-flopped. When Theresa Earnhardt opens her wallet for the betterment of the team - a first since she took control of the team, I have to change my opinion. Too bad there wasn?t a road course race in the Chase.

TOP 5 Finish Prediction:

1) #16 Greg Biffle (12/1)
2) #24 Jeff Gordon (8/1)
3) #2 Kurt Busch (16/1)
4) #48 Jimmie Johnson (5/1)
5) #11 Denny Hamlin (12/1)

Junior would welcome Danica to NASCAR

Junior would welcome Danica to NASCAR

Junior would welcome Danica to NASCAR
October 9, 2009

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) -Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he'd love to see good friend Danica Patrick in NASCAR, but isn't sure when - or even if - the IndyCar star will make the transition to stock car racing.

Patrick and Kelley Earnhardt, general manager of JR Motorsports, have had preliminary talks about Patrick racing in the Nationwide Series, but Earnhardt Jr. said any discussions were in the ``early stages.''

``Right now it's just Kelley and her having a few phone conversations about it and really haven't gotten any further about it,'' Earnhardt said.

Patrick has reportedly agreed to remain in IndyCar with Andretti Green Racing but hasn't ruled out running some stock car races in the future. She's currently fifth in the IndyCar Series standings heading into the season finale at Homestead.

She has repeatedly declined to reveal anything about her plans for 2010 and beyond in recent days, including after IndyCar qualifying at Homestead on Friday. She chided a reporter for asking about her future and immediately walked away.

``It's interesting to see her interest in NASCAR, it's interesting for all of us,'' Earnhardt said. ``If we're a piece of that, if we play a part in that, we'll see down the road.''

Earnhardt has little doubt Patrick could successfully make the jump from open-wheel racing to stock cars, saying her competitiveness would be an asset in the series.

``She has high expectations of herself,'' he said. ``She has a lot of those intangible values. There's a lot of things around herself when it comes to initiative and will power that you either have it or you don't have it.

Of course JR would welcome Danica to NASCAR, it would mean someone on the track would suck more than he does and take the focus off of his top 35 finish each week.

Different standard for non-Chase drivers

Different standard for non-Chase drivers

Different standard for non-Chase drivers
October 9, 2009

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) -David Reutimann saw Mark Martin's bumper in the mirror and took a deep breath.

It wasn't jitters exactly. Reutimann knew the NASCAR veteran - considered one of the cleanest racers in the business - wasn't going to cause any trouble as they battled side by side for most of last week's Sprint Cup event at Kansas.

Yet Reutimann also knows the stakes are different for the 31 drivers on the outside of the Chase for the championship than for the 12 drivers like Martin who are vying for a title.

Sure, Reutimann was racing to win. He just wasn't going to risk Martin's shot at finally grabbing the championship to do it.

``It's nerve-racking to race a guy in the Chase because you don't want to touch the guy,'' said Reutimann, who finished eighth, one spot behind Martin. ``You don't want to be the guy that 'Well, if this hadn't have happened, such and such would have won the Chase or won the Championship.' You don't want to be that guy, none of us do.''

It's a fine line the non-Chase drivers must walk during the 10-race Chase, which continues Sunday at Auto Club Speedway. It doesn't mean non-Chasers have to pull over like they're making room for an ambulance when a Chase guy gets on their bumper.

Yet the non-Chasers like Reutimann know there are only two ways to ensure yourself time in the spotlight during the Chase, win a race or ruin a Chase guy's day. And considering non-Chasers rarely make it to Victory Lane - Greg Biffle was the last to do it in 2007 - the alternative isn't that appetizing.

``But you can't roll over for those guys,'' said Reutimann, who was second in qualifying but will start 42nd on Sunday because of car failed post-qualifying inspection.

Maybe, but there is a certain amount of etiquette involved, a lesson Cup newcomer Brad Keselowski experienced in Kansas. Keselowski's No. 25 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was working near the lead when he found himself in close quarters with Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya, both Chase drivers.

Stewart, perhaps agitated by the way Keselowski was driving, radioed his concerns to crew chief Darian Grubb. A short time later NASCAR officials sent word to Keselowski's crew chief, Tony Eury Jr., that the 25-year-old driver needed to calm down. Stewart, however, didn't view it as situation where a Chase driver was getting preferential treatment.

``It was more a young rookie driver that was racing in the Nationwide Series or the Truck Series and that's how you race on Friday and Saturday, that's not how you race on Sunday,'' said Stewart, a two-time Cup champion. ``I realize it's a longer race and there's more give and take. He's young. He's aggressive. He wants to do well. He wants to earn respect. He's got to understand you've got to be patient.''

Keselowski, a surprise winner at Talladega in the spring, didn't take the call personally, though he remains a little confused about what exactly he did wrong.

``I thought it was somewhat humorous because it seemed the Chase drivers around me were the ones who were racing aggressively,'' Keselowski said. ``I thought I was doing a normal deal.''

NASCAR officials monitor drivers' conduct during the race and often relay any concerns to the offending teams. Vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said Keselowski wasn't singled out because he's not in the Chase.

``When we see things going on around the track that could affect the outcome of innocent bystanders and drivers that don't have a fight, we'll take and call a driver out on that,'' Pemberton said. ``That's what we did.''

Keselowski, who will drive Cup full-time for Penske Racing next year, isn't angry. He pointed out he wasn't penalized for his driving and has no plans to change his tactics going forward.

``I don't think NASCAR was threatening me,'' he said. ``Much like a mom says you don't put your hand on a stove because it's hot. Is that a threat? No, that's your mom saying it's hot, don't burn your hand. If I had gotten into an accident with Tony, that stove would have been really ... hot.'' It's a stove that nobody wants to get near this time of year, particularly the Chase drivers. And much like Reutimann is particularly careful while driving next to a Chaser, the Chase drivers know when they're alongside a non-Chaser.

``Being in the Chase you've got to be aware that you're vulnerable,'' said Montoya, who comes to California third in the points behind Martin and Jimmie Johnson. ``People kind of run over you pretty easy. I think you help yourself by giving them space because they don't have much to lose compared with us.''

Besides, as Montoya has learned during his three years on the circuit the non-Chasers aren't the only ones to worry about.

``It's pretty interesting to see how guys in the Chase, they race you one way before the Chase started and now people are not really giving too much even early in the races,'' Montoya said. ``It's kind of surprising ... (but) you just play the same game as they are playing.''

NASCAR reducing restrictor plate size

NASCAR reducing restrictor plate size

NASCAR reducing restrictor plate size
October 9, 2009

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) -NASCAR is reducing the size of the restrictor plates used by Sprint Cup cars at Talladega in hopes of making it safer for drivers.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series director John Darby said the move will reduce horsepower and take a little bit of top-end speed off the cars.

The track announced earlier this week it is raising the fence at the massive 2.66-mile oval from 14 to 22 feet following a safety analysis after Carl Edwards' last-lap crash during the spring race sent him flying into the fence.

Debris from the accident injured seven fans in the stands, the most serious a broken jaw suffered by a teenage girl.

The frontstretch fence at Talladega will be raised before the Nov. 1 race, and the backstretch will be completed during the offseason. Daytona will have its fences raised before its first big event in January.

  • Auto Club Speedway revamp on hold?: Auto Club Speedway proposed a multimillion-dollar revamp of the Fontana track to foster closer racing and boost crowds at its two annual NASCAR Sprint Cup races, but the track's owner has taken no action on the plan. The plan called for raising the banking of the track's four turns to 23 degrees from the current 14 degrees and narrowing its width in certain sections, all to bring the cars closer together and promote more passing, according to motor racing sources familiar with the proposal who agreed to speak on the condition that they not be identified. Making the changes probably would cost $23 million to $30 million and could be completed between the track's two NASCAR race dates, and would involve digging up the entire turns to make their banking steeper, they said. The 565-acre Auto Club Speedway, formerly called California Speedway, is 50 miles east of Los Angeles and holds its next NASCAR Sprint Cup race Oct. 11. Its other race is in February. After this year's February race, Auto Club Speedway President Gillian Zucker proposed the reconstruction plan to the track's owner, International Speedway Corp., the sources said. But International Speedway's board of directors has taken no action on the idea, including at a meeting last month, largely because the project is too costly at a time when the company, which owns or operates 13 tracks, is struggling with the weak economy and slumping attendance, the sources said. Zucker declined to confirm or deny the proposal. But she said in a statement that "it's no secret that making Auto Club Speedway the most competitive NASCAR track on the circuit is something I have been advocating since I arrived here four years ago." International Speedway spokesman Lenny Santiago also declined to comment on the plan but said "potential projects are discussed internally on a regular basis for all of our facilities."(Los Angeles Times)(10-1-2009)

  • Auto Club Speedway happy with turnout: Despite fears that the economic recession, the Academy Awards telecast and other factors might limit attendance to 60,000 or fewer, NASCAR estimated that the race drew about 78,000 people to the Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway [seats 92,000] -- 8,000 more than it said attended the Fontana race last Labor Day weekend. Auto Club Speedway, like many tracks nationwide, had cut prices on some seats in response to the economic pressure. "The turnout was awesome, I'm so thrilled with the crowd," said track President Gillian Zucker. "It clearly shows how passionate Southern California is about NASCAR. That even in this kind of an economy that the crowd is that big says an awful lot."(Los Angeles Times)(2-23-2009)

  • California Speedway to change name UPDATE: In a landmark development within the motorsports industry, California Speedway will announce a deal with the Automobile Club of Southern California for the naming rights to the 11-year-old track. "This will redefine track licensing," said Speedway president Gillian Zucker, who will preside over today's press conference along with Tom McKernan, president and CEO of the Auto Club. "It's a powerful platform, very unique. This will be more than a signage and media deal." Under the terms of the agreement, the official name of the track that first opened in 1997 will be the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California. The Auto Club already had a presence at the Fontana facility. Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is the Auto Club 500 and the Speedway's drag strip was christened the Auto Club Dragway in 2007.(Inland Valley Daily Bulletin)(2-21-2008)

How have you been doing with your predictions?

This track is wide open I think for a couple of long shot contenders...If JJ doesn't run away with it there a a couple of guys who could playa factor with long odds...I jumped on Biffle, Kenseth, Edwards and even Kyle because these guys, especially the latter 3, always run well here...lot of value I think in them

"Of course JR would welcome Danica to NASCAR, it would mean someone on the track would suck more than he does and take the focus off of his top 35 finish each week."

The second I started reading this I had the same thought, anything to distract people from how bad he is...When you compare him to the other 3 drivers on the top team in Nascar the gap is enormous...he has the best equiptment and cannot produce anything, it's funny

Daytona will have its fences raised before its first big event in January.

what a joke, as if the COT isn't enough...good grief

DP,

I have, I hate to say it, "Inside info" that next year, NASCAR will suck even more than it does this year. Sponsors are pulling out, Trucks might not run next year? What used to be a great sport is a fuggin' joke ! When Nissan comes in, I am done. It might as well become drifting, Is that really a sport anyways?

My solution, Jack Roush buys ARCA, makes an America Stock Car Racing series.

When the King was talikng about going to YODAS, I about threw up in my RP hat. :nono:
