I was just getting ready to answer some of thses guys that equate the Number of titles to the greatness of coaching, but Kdogg21 did a better job than I could.

If managing egos is the formula for great coaching then yes zen phil is pretty good but actually coaching the game or building a winner from nothing, come on it's not even close:nono:

I think he is a good coach but he has always had a boatload of talent and before I would say he is a great coach I want to see what he would do with a average team. Pat Riley was considered one of the greatest coaches in basketball but he floundered when he took over the Heat and their average talent after they lost Mourning!

If Phil Jackson elects not to coach the Lakers next season, I want Pat Riley back -- and I intend to pray to the Lakers' God every single day until there's closure on the subject. :)

Seriously, there's no arguing the fact that Pat is the BEST COACH AVAILABLE -- and he has said many times that he'd love to move back to sunny, "there's no freakin' humidity here," Southern California. And remember, the only significant conflict Pat really had the last couple of years in L.A. has moved on to Memphis.

Pat is not a triangle guy -- he's the architect of the 80s Showtime Lakers -- and if anything could handle the egos on this team, it's wide open basketball. And Pat is old enough -- and certainly accomplished enough -- to get the respect of this squad.

You got that right JT, but I could care less, as I hate the Lakers and was so glad to see the Pistons give them an ass whoopin they won't soon forget.

Hello, managing egos is a big part of the formula that makes a great coach! These days, ego is one of the biggest issues a coach has to deal with in regards to players. Most coaches don't handle it well & the results show when you have teams quit on you, etc.....

The man is a great coach & it is quite idiotic for someone not to realize that. So many coaches have had great players & not win a damn thing yet this man won 9 titles in 13 years. Many coaches would tell you they'd be happy with getting one or two titles much less 9!

My main problem and only problem with Phil Jackson was he never had his team playing 100% every night. During the season Lakers always take games off. Ok I guess I can live with that. BUt I cannot live with the lack of intensity the Lakers played in certain games in the playoffs. You should play hard every night, unless maybe your up 3-0 in 7 game series. Jackson is a horrible motivator. Another thing Jackson did poorly is adjust to Gary Payton. He approved signing Payton and wouldn't change the triangle to help fit Paytons style of play. Instead Lakers got a worthless PG out there. Kobe hates Jackson because Phil never does anything to help Kobe's game. Very rarely you see players setting picks for Kobe or running plays to get Kobe open.

Phil Jackson=OK Coach

What is Phil Jackson great at...

1- Back stabbing the current head coach as an assistant (ala Doug Collins)
2- Back stabbing the current GM as a head coach (ala West)
3- Bringing along two of the all time BEST assistant coaches to EVER coach in the NBA and sitting back while they ran the offense and defense and you handed it self help books (ala the Bulls)
4- Whining over any calls against you after getting most of the calls throughout your career.
5- Being a "players coach" and not being able to give your superstars the necessary "kick in the ass" when the time called for it. (letting the nuts run the asylum)
6- Never giving Krause credit for anything
7- Never giving your assistants any credit as well, since you knew they weren't head coaching material and wouldn't be leaving anyway
8- Being the 1st coach in the history of the NBA to NOT call a time out when others would, thus generally astounding the radio/tv broadcasts of your games to your level of brilliance
9- Praising NPR (National Public Radio) as if it were the second coming and the only media people should be listening to
10- Sleeping with someone who is your boss (or has an influence on your future income)
11- Generally carrying yourself as the arrogant horse's ass that you are:moon:
12- Tilting your head and glaring at officials with those daggers
