Philadelphia @ Green Bay (+3)

The Eagles travel to Lambeau Field to face off against the Packers in their opening game of the 2007 season. The Eagles are favored by three points and on paper look like an easy cover. As we all know, if it looks too easy, it usually is a trap. Consider a few stats...

The Eagles and Packers have met 5 times in the L5 seasons, with the Eagles going 5-0 in those contests. The Packers have averaged a measly 14.2 p/pg in those contests, never scoring more than 17. Brett Favre has been atrocious, posting a 4/8 TD-to-INT ratio.

The Packers are dealing with injury concerns heading into Sunday's game. Both of their running backs suffered injuries in the preseason, but should be available to play this weekend. Donald Driver has been given the green light to play, but one can not be sure of his effectiveness after what looked like a nasty foot sprain against Jacksonville. Also, starting wideout Greg Jennings is listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury.

The Packers have lost four of their last five season openers and are 0-5 in their L5 home debuts. The Eagles simply have a better team. Green Bay does have a better defense than most give them credit for, and points should be at a premium for both teams.

Despite my concerns about the soft line, I will lay the three with Philadelphia.

Atlanta @ Minnesota (-3)

Tavaris Jackson will start at QB today for the Minnesota Vikings. I'll let you take that in for just a minute.

The Vikings open at home against The Team America Forgot. Many people want to write off this as a lost season for Atlanta. (Heck, even the NFL is less than optimistic. Check out this headline from their game preview page.)

Falcons embark on what may be forgettable season

I for one, am not so confident that all is lost. Joey Harrington is no Tom Brady, that is for sure, but he has been serviceable in starting gigs for both Detroit and Miami. Warrick Dunn returns today to lead a rushing attack that was tops in the NFL last season. The defense played well last year, allowing opponents just 3.7 yards per rush, second only to the Vikings.

The Vikings do nothing to scare me on offense, setting franchise lows for fewest touchdown passes (13) and first downs (272). They have an even more unknown group of receivers than Atlanta.

Finally, I like Petrino. He is a winner. He has given no excuses for what has happened to his team. He believes in himself and his system. He believes he can win with pretty much anybody. He believes, really and truly, the Falcons have a chance to make the playoffs.
