Gman how can you keep saying this team is overrated. 8-1 in the best conference and just beat the hottest team in America. What else do you want them to do. They are still only rated # 9 so I just cant see what is so overrated about them
Overrated they are not. They play some great team ball and know each other's roles. They're also deadly accurate from the outside. They'll go far in the Tourney.

they're soft, they sit on the perimeter, and they jack 3s all day. when they're falling, they can beat teams. but they are overmatched against physical teams -- see: texas, lsu, even kentucky. i give credit where its due and they had a nice win against oklahoma. but they are a prime candidate to get bounced by a midmajor on the opening weekend of the ncaas
now having said that, beilein is a great coach. take nothing away from him. but that doesnt mean that his team is immune to being dissected.
here's something that is very telling about west virginia.
take a look at how pittsnogle plays when teams get physical with him.
he played like dog shit against texas.
like dog shit against cincinnati
like dog shit against lsu
like dog shit against pittsburgh
see a common theme with those teams?
west virginia definitely does things "the right way". and they play hard. but that doesn't mean they're not overrated.
and monk- i agree with you on gonzaga. in fact, i think george washington is a more complete team than gonzaga or west virginia. but thats for another time.

for a team with basically no Macs caliber players and not considered to be chit for two years in eyes of experts, they personify team play and are capable of beating anyone on a given night; they get outrebounded by wide margin but have best ASS/TO ratio in league (maybe nation); some teams have to win diff. ways i guess than convention; and yes they jack treys but I have taped prob 10 of their games and rerun their offense as many times as 20 times on each of their sets and Im telling you, they get more than their share of layins too (i use them to exemplify good cuts and unselfish passing to my HS team as I create DVDs hilights on them and i give Beilein world of credit credit for helping my team's IQ anyway) ... this to me in my 30+ of coaching is a team to be admired and honored ... teams like this come along rarely in today's ball, they play like the old Knicks and Bill's Blazers--team and chemistry comes first. Watch their players stand and clap and support, its not phoney, its beautiful in my eyes anyway.
yes they shoot a lot of treys, just like duke and louisville and many others in past ... they have discarded and unwanted players, so to blankedly say, "they wont last past first weekend," is pretty general call, besides that malady has bitten great teams many times, ask Lute and Roy, and tons of others ...
Obviously you dont respect them, which is cool, but others might see it differently, such as I.

The Zags are overrated but I don't think WVa is..tho I do agree w/ gman that when they face a tough, physical team in the Big Dance they will have their problems.
Gman has been calling these guys overated. These guys could (and might) win the championship and he would call them overated because they make 3s.
So what if Pittsnogle isnt physical and they get outrebounded, they outscore you and if they are down they steal the ball or get stops.
Nothing you can say can convince a guy who looks at a record of 9-1 in the best conference in basketball and says they are overated anything otherwise.

apparently i ruffled some feathers with my opinion of west virginia hoops.
gregg, everything you posted is correct. they do things the right way, they shoot the ball well, and they play hard.
and i understand that they're easy to root for. every middle-aged white guy wants to root for a team like west virginia.
but just like this team can beat anyone on a given night, they can also lose to anyone on a given night.
the marshall game proved that.
if a sub-.500 marshall team can beat wvu on a neutral floor, is it that inconceivable that wvu gets bounced on the first weekend?
