NHL announces first-round playoff schedule

NEW YORK - The National Hockey League announced the 2002 Stanley Cup playoff schedule for the Conference Quarterfinal Round, beginning Wednesday, April 17.
Four of the eight Conference Quarterfinal series will open Wednesday, April 17. The Presidents' Trophy winners, the Detroit Red Wings, host the Vancouver Canucks; the San Jose Sharks host the Phoenix Coyotes; the Philadelphia Flyers host the Ottawa Senators; and the Carolina Hurricanes host the New Jersey Devils.

The remaining series will open Thursday, April 18. The defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche host the Los Angeles Kings; the St. Louis Blues host the Chicago Blackhawks; the Boston Bruins host the Montreal Canadiens; and the Toronto Maple Leafs host the New York Islanders.

National television coverage

Network television coverage of the Stanley Cup playoffs will be provided in the United States on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 and in Canada on CBC, SRC and Sportsnet.

ESPN and ESPN2 will provide nightly coverage through the Conference Finals, beginning April 17. ESPN's 10th consecutive season of playoff action also will include Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

ABC begins its Conference Quarterfinal coverage Saturday, April 20, at 3 p.m. Eastern with coverage of four games: New York Islanders at Toronto, Los Angeles at Colorado, Phoenix at San Jose and Chicago at St. Louis. ABC will broadcast every weekend of the first three rounds. In the Stanley Cup Final series, ABC will cover Games 3 through 7, if necessary.

CBC Hockey Night in Canada and La Soir?e du Hockey on SRC will provide regional and national coverage throughout the playoffs. Sportsnet will provide cable coverage of up to 14 games of the Conference Quarterfinal round.

NHL Cool Shots will continue to provide up-to-date playoff stories on its weekly shows during the entire Stanley Cup playoff. NHL Cool Shots may be seen weekly on ESPN in the United States and on CBC and Sportsnet in Canada. Daily playoff updates may be accessed on the internet at NHL.com.

I remember lots of unders and good +1.5 bets in tight games.

T-Ray thanks for the post- I like unders if you can get them at 5 in certain spots, unfortunately we will see a lot of 4 1/2 and I do not like to play these under in the playoffs. I also agree that + 1.5 in the playoffs can be a really good bet at times. Can't wait for the series lines to come out, I will spend the majority of my time with the series lines.

What happens in round two of the playoffs for instance if the Kings upset the Lanche and The Wings beat the Canbucks- The Wings would play the Kings in the second round because the Kings are the lowest seed left in the West playing the top seed?

I think one of the best values for playoff matchups will be Vancouver. Check out the goal differential for Vancouver since Jan 1st. They are the top team in the NHL for the second half of the season.

Also, Historically, Overs do much better in the playoffs than unders because the perception is that the scores of playoff games are much lower than what is reality. The best edges to bet Over are when you can get 4.5 lines because for 2-2 scores you are guaranteed the win (as opposed to regular season where it's not)

One playoff strategy that worked for me last year is to pick a team in a certain series and play them throughout the series if you think the series is a mismatch but won't be priced as such.

Last year I played St. Louis in every game vs. San Jose in round 1 and Dallas in round 2 and it worked very well. They wrapped up the Sharks in 6, meaning an average line below -200 would guarantee a profit. I was very fortunate in round 2 when they swept Dallas.

The reason I like this better than playing series bets is that it lessens your risk in most cases while giving you a chance for greater profit if the series is won in fewer games. I only like this strategy for playing favorites. If I like an underdog in a series, generally I bet the underdog or wait until after game 1 and bet the dog figuring on a game 1 loss but a series win.

The thing to watch for is that you have to take a team that puts emphasis on winning round one. Last year New Jersey was a sure bet to beat Carolina in their first round series but it took them 6 games so my strategy would have resulted in a loss overall.

There is one series in particular that I am looking at that seems to be a mismatch but I am still looking so I will post it if/when I decide to bet on those games. As for an underdog, I do like Ottawa and the Isles to possibly win their series'. My heart says to try a little something on Vancouver but I already have a Stanley Cup bet on them so I will probably just leave that series bet alone.
