Gardenhire going with hot hand
Cuddyer earned start with productive September
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

OAKLAND -- Of the three rookies he has the option of playing in right field for Game 1 of the playoffs, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire is going with his least experienced guy. But he's not worried, because few hitters on the club are as hot as Michael Cuddyer right now.
Gardenhire named Cuddyer his starting right fielder for Game 1 Monday night over Dustan Mohr and Bobby Kielty, making the announcement before the club's workout in preparation for the American League Division Series against the Oakland A's.

"It's a great feeling to know that Gardy's got confidence in me to put me out there for Game 1," Cuddyer said. "I'm just going to try and stay hot like I've been and have good approaches at the plate and treat it like any game."

The manager has plenty of reasons to have confidence in Cuddyer. He batted .321 (18-for-56) in September, including a 9-for-20 stretch (.450) during the final six games of the regular season.

"He's been the hot hand," Gardenhire said. "He came in during Spring Training and had a great spring. We sent him out, because he needed some at-bats and needed to play right field. He came back up towards the end [and] struggled a little bit, but he's gotten hot lately. He's swinging the bat very well. He's the kind of kid who can drive the ball out to both fields."

Kielty, who hit clutch eighth-inning homers to give Minnesota a pair of wins over the White Sox, has been one of Gardenhire's favorite bench players, because he's a switch-hitter. Mohr has been strong on defense, but has hit just .229 since the All-Star break.

One thing Cuddyer and his teammates will have to deal with is the bright daytime sky in Oakland. Fly balls are known to be notoriously hard to see for players during afternoons at Network Associates Coliseum. All-Star center fielder Torii Hunter knows it could be troublesome on Monday and has advised Cuddyer.

"The sun is right there, and it's tough to see," Hunter said. "I said, 'Don't be nervous; take some fly balls early before the game and try to get used to it.' But it's pretty tough out there."

"I'm going to try and concentrate on the ball," Cuddyer said. "I was fortunate enough to play when we came here [in September], and it was during a day game. It's high skies and bright sun, but I'll just deal with it -- focus on the ball and concentrate. Let everything else take care of itself."

Gardenhire was asked if he ever imagined during the season that he'd be starting Cuddyer this year in an important postseason game.

"No, not really," he said. "He definitely got beat up. He came back. Scotty Ullger, our hitting instructor, talked to him about shortening his swing and shortening up the high leg kick. He's done all those things. It's really working out for him."

Daytime advantages: While sunny skies can be a problem, day games can be a benefit for the Twins. Most of them have never been to the postseason.

"You can just go ahead and get it out of the way, instead of getting up in the morning, sitting around your hotel room, thinking about the night game and putting pressure on yourself," Hunter said. " It's good we can get up in the morning, go straight to the park and get it on."

The Twins were 25-24 in matinee games during the regular season.

Different story: The last time the Twins were in Oakland, the A's swept a three-game series. The A's were in the middle of a red-hot stread and eventually won an AL-record 20 consecutive games.

Hunter is hopeful that it will be a different story in the ALDS.

"We caught those guys when they were on fire," Hunter said. "Of course, the pitching was probably at their best when we faced them. So we know what to expect. In the playoffs, they'll give it their best again. We've already seen their best. A lot of guys will be making adjustments, and we'll be ready for those guys. They're human."

After all, it was the Twins who ended that record-setting streak, on Sept. 6 at the Metrodome.
