Manager Tony La Russa already had reached his verdict, but Andy Benes' painful fifth-inning swing Sunday cemented La Russa's decision not to include the veteran righthander in a three-man rotation against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the best-of-five NL Division Series.

La Russa said Sunday morning that Matt Morris will pitch Tuesday's series opener, followed by Chuck Finley in Game 2 and Woody Williams, health permitting, in Game 3.

Morris will "definitely" return on four days' rest to pitch Game 4, according to La Russa; Finley is tentatively set to start a possible Game 5 on short rest.

"I think you look at what gives you the best chance to win, that's all," La Russa said. "And I can honestly say that's what we've done. You look at it from every angle. If something arises, we have options."

Williams remains the biggest variable. Nine days after leaving his last start with lower back stiffness, he threw without pain from the flat on Sunday and is scheduled to work from the mound today. Already disabled twice this season due to a strained muscle in his side, Williams has not faced hitters since Sept. 20 and would start Game 3 after two weeks off. Regardless of whether Williams can perform today, La Russa said he will be among the 12 pitchers on the Cardinals' Division Series roster.

"You know how I feel: I am going to start Game 3," Williams said.

Williams added that if his back again seizes up, he will insist upon being left off the roster.

"If something happens that I can't pitch, I'll be the best cheerleader we've got," he said. "But I'm not going to take the spot from someone who can go."

Numbers make a case for Benes as the Cardinals' best pitcher in the second half. Benes finished 5-1 with a 1.56 ERA in his last 12 starts. The Cardinals won nine of those games. Since returning from the disabled list July 16, Benes is 5-2 with a 1.86 ERA. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 13 of his last 14 starts. The only exception was Sept. 11 when he surrendered three runs in 5 1/3 innings against Milwaukee. Benes' five shutout innings Sunday dropped his season ERA to 2.78.

The Diamondbacks battered Benes for 10 runs (three earned) on April 15. Benes responded Sept. 24 with seven shutout innings. He finished the season with 17 consecutive shutout innings.

"Sometimes you don't base everything on ERA and batting averages," La Russa said.

Insisting that he's available this week, Benes offered no dissent over La Russa's call. "I've looked at it the same way since I've come back. I'll just be ready when they ask me to (pitch)," he said. "I try not to get too wrapped up in anything. I felt like I needed to earn their trust and confidence in me. I've felt like I've thrown well enough to do that. At the same time I know those three guys are going to throw if healthy. I know I've got to be ready if they're not."

La Russa said rookie 11-game winner Jason Simontacchi will be responsible for long relief for the first two games and that Benes will start Game 3 if back stiffness prevents Williams from appearing.

Benes left Sunday's game after taking a bad swing against Milwaukee Brewers lefthander Wayne Franklin. Immediately before the pitch, Benes received a lengthy standing ovation in recognition of his 2,000th career strikeout to end the top half of the inning. Benes swung through a pitch and his right knee buckled, bringing La Russa and trainer Mark O'Neal out of the dugout.

Benes explained that his discomfort actually began while running the bases in the third inning and emanated from his lower back. Benes has been receiving adjustments two or three times a week from a chiropractor.

Lineup is a mystery

La Russa remained coy about Tuesday's lineup against Diamondbacks lefthander Randy Johnson, but lefthanded-hitting center fielder Jim Edmonds' status may be complicated by a pulled hamstring aggravated during Saturday's 3-1 win over the Brewers. Edmonds did not start Sunday but contributed a pinch single during the Cardinals' four-run eighth.

La Russa isn't averse to using an unconventional lineup against the dominant Johnson. He employed an outfield of Craig Paquette, Edmonds and Miguel Cairo to beat Johnson in Game 2 of last October's Division Series. J.D. Drew sat, as he will likely do Tuesday. La Russa also could opt to play Albert Pujols at first base while sitting Tino Martinez. Such an alignment would create space for righthanded bats Cairo and Eli Marrero in the outfield flanking Edmonds.

Brenly's lineup to rely on defense

The Erubiel Durazo experiment probably will be on hold for Games 1 and 2 of their National League Division Series against St. Louis.

Manager Bob Brenly revealed Sunday that he is leaning toward a defense-oriented lineup with Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling scheduled to pitch the first two games against Matt Morris and Chuck Finley.

That move was becoming more anticipated as Durazo didn't start in right in any of the Diamondbacks' final four regular-season games. He had made only two major league appearances in right field before starting consecutive games Tuesday and Wednesday at St. Louis after Luis Gonzalez's left shoulder separation.

"The history of the game has shown that we can't always count on offense," Brenly said. "I don't care how good guys have been during the regular season, how dangerous they are and highly thought of they are. In the postseason, because of the tremendous amount of advance scouting, picking a guy or two in the lineup that you're not going to let beat you, if you can nullify some of that offense, the key is the plays defensively."

Durazo, who batted .261 with 16 home runs and 48 RBIs, said after the game that he hadn't been notified of Brenly's intentions and declined comment.

"If there was a matchup that screamed for getting Erubiel out there, along with (Mark) Grace, it's something we'd look at again," Brenly said.

Injury update

Outfielder David Dellucci was unsuccessful in his attempt to start Sunday. Dellucci was cleared to play after coping with an irritated nerve that shoots pain up his thumb and bothers him when squeezing a bat.

Outfielder Quinton McCracken (bruised left shin) also didn't play but was cleared to do so.

Despite an impressive batting-practice session Thursday, Brenly said the Diamondbacks are inclined to leave right fielder Danny Bautista (left shoulder) off the roster for the division series. Bautista hasn't played since undergoing surgery in late May.

"The reality is he hasn't seen live pitching in (four) months," Brenly said.

"As exciting as it is, it gave us pause for thought, but the reality is he isn't ready yet to face game pitching. If he takes the time during the division series and we win and he keeps progressing, he'd be an option for the future."

The Windy City
Game 1 Lineup

1. Tony Womack, SS
2. Junior Spivey, 2B
3. Steve Finley, CF
4. Mark Grace, 1B
5. Matt Williams, 3B
6. Quinton McCracken, RF
7. David Dellucci, LF
8. Chad Moeller, C
9. Randy Johnson, P

Dellucci will start in left field in Game 1, while McCracken will get the nod in right.

As is always the case when it comes to Brenly's lineups, don't expect to see the same one in Game 2. With left-hander Chuck Finley on the mound, Brenly will likely sit the lefty Dellucci in favor the right-handed swinging Little, and Greg Colbrunn could get the nod at first base in place of Mark Grace.

Injury sidelines Williams for series; Benes will start Game 3

PHOENIX - It took Woody Williams only 12 tosses from a bullpen mound to confirm what the Cardinals had privately suspected but won't publicly confirm until Tuesday. Williams, the team's most consistent but also its most injury-plagued starting pitcher, will not appear in the NL Division Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Williams met for about 10 minutes with manager Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan and general manager Walt Jocketty in La Russa's office after the aborted side session.

"It wasn't the news we were looking for," La Russa said.

Though the Cardinals won't confirm their roster for the series until Tuesday's noon deadline, the decision was made that Williams will not pitch this series.

"I'm done, at least for now," Williams said.

The setback leaves Andy Benes to make Saturday's Game 3 start previously set for Williams. Benes left Sunday's game after five shutout innings because of lower back stiffness but insisted Monday that the condition had improved significantly.

Club officials met last night to discuss whether to replace Williams on the roster with Garrett Stephenson, Jamey Wright or Gabe Molina. La Russa said Benes tentatively remains the choice to start in place of Williams should his stiff lower back loosen by Thursday. Jason Simontacchi threw a side session Monday and represents a fallback for Saturday's start.

Simontacchi will be available in long relief tonight and for Thursday's Game 2, according to La Russa.

"We need to decide realistically what that means and if we have to put somebody else on the roster," La Russa said. "Do we need to find someone? I think the answer is yes."

Williams reported no serious discomfort in recent days and insisted Sunday that he would take his scheduled turn. He participated fully in exercises and threw in the outfield during Monday's workout before heading to the bullpen, where he threw from a mound for the first time since Sept. 20.

As soon as Williams went into a full delivery, he felt discomfort. At one point, he stopped his throw to partly unwrap a bandage around his back and midsection. After several more deliveries, he walked from the mound and admitted to Duncan that it was useless to continue.

La Russa hinted last weekend that he would leave Williams on the roster even if unable to pitch. The Cardinals are carrying 12 pitchers, one more than La Russa considers necessary, because of the roster's configuration when postseason eligibility was determined Aug. 31. Williams, however, said Monday that he would resist La Russa's impulse.

"It's not fair to everyone who has put in time this year," he said. "It's not the way I'd want to do it."

Because rosters may be reconfigured for each round of the playoffs, Williams said he is holding out hope that he might be ready to pitch in either the National League Championship Series or World Series.
