season record: 2* 12-7-1

first game this week:

2* so. carolina+4.5 (140)---holtz called last years loss to virginia his worst loss of his career in a game that they committed 7 turnovers. imo, there will be a different sc team this week that showed up last week vs. ull. i think that last week holtz kept things under wraps, having his team ready this week to get revenge from that loss. last week virginia lost last yrs. acc player of the year(qb schaub) with a separated shoulder. his replacement, martinez, played all of 8 minutes last week vs. duke, at home, & completed 6 of 15 passes for 76 yds. now he goes into a very tough stadium, vs. a very good def. with 2 solid corners & people expect him to win. i'll take my chances with holtz + points.

good luck.

more to come.

2* fresno st. +10 (130)----am a little leary with this play. thought the points were too generous. but thought if chenker can play it, so can i(lol). some things that you might find helpful: fresno is 6-0 ats in last 6 home games vs. pac 10 & 10-4 ats. in last 14 games either home or away vs. pac 10 teams. also are 7-0 ats. in last 7 as home dog & 5-0 su/ats vs. osu at home since 1980 with 18 points as the average margin of win. since 1999, osu is 2-7 ats. as away favorite.

toy, i hope you don't change your opinion of the sc game only on my writeup.

good luck

the reason is that i thought i heard that schaub got hurt in the first quarter last week and the rest of the game was QB'ed by the backup....if that is wrong, then that is why i might not play UVA...

The other QB, Martinez, is a RS freshmen. He was something like 8-14 for around 80 yards. They pounded Duke on the ground and he didn't need to do much. Read that he came in and missed on his first four passes, then settled down. He was a highly touted HS kid but had no experience. Asking him to go down there and win might be too much. They're gonna bring it at him. S. Carolina seems like the play, and a strong one.

Martinez conquers nerves as replacement for Schaub

By Dave Johnson
Daily Press

Published September 2, 2003

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Like any quarterback, Anthony Martinez will always remember his first touchdown pass. And, lest he get a big head down the line, he'll always be reminded of his first attempt.

It was midway through the first quarter of Virginia's season opener against Duke, and the Cavaliers had second-and-one from their 37-yard line. Martinez noticed something in the Blue Devils' defense, so he checked off to a slant pattern for wideout Art Thomas.

It was the right call: Thomas was wide open, and Martinez's throw was right on target. Problem was, Thomas was looking to throw a block as the ball drilled him in the helmet.

Somebody screwed up, and it was the rookie. Though it was the right call, he made it in such a low voice that only the linemen around the ball heard him.

"I think if I had been louder, it would have been a touchdown," Martinez said. "But that was just nerves. I thought I was being loud enough, but the nerves had the best of me."

Martinez hopes that is behind him. With Matt Schaub out for at least this week with a separated right shoulder, Martinez, a redshirt freshman, will make his first start at South Carolina. The joint holds 80,250 and the game is sold out.

Martinez did his job in last week's 27-0 victory over Duke, which was, as Cavaliers coach Al Groh put it, to "bring his team home." His numbers (6-of-15, 76 yards) weren't impressive, and some of his incompletions weren't even close. He was nervous, and at times he played like it.

"When I first got in there, the speed of the game was so fast," he said. "Everything was going past me like lightning bolts. But after a while, I calmed down and looked around, looked at everything, and it started to slow down.

"It was just so much in such a little bit of time. It was little things, like the wrist band (with the list of plays) fogged up a couple of times, so I was trying to keep up with the play clock and the wrist band at the same time. The little things added up. But I started to get more confidence as the game went on."

He needed a spark, and he got one. After starting 0-for-3, he faced third-and-nine from the Duke 41. With Thomas in one-on-one coverage, Martinez lofted a pretty deep ball that Thomas hauled in at the 2. Wali Lundy scored on the next play to make it 10-0.

That first touchdown pass came with 49 seconds remaining in the half. On second-and-goal from the 9, Martinez threw it right where he was supposed to on a fade route. Tight end Heath Miller's catch made it 17-0 at halftime.

"I saw him sitting on the bench kind of shaking a bit at first," tailback Alvin Pearman said. "But he wound up doing extremely well for us."

Martinez has the physical tools. At 6-foot-3 and 249 pounds, you wonder if he could play linebacker in a pinch. But with that arm, Groh would never let him. Martinez is as strong as Schaub is accurate.

"Amazing arm strength," wideout Ottowa Anderson said. "He can get the ball anywhere on the field he needs to get it. He can really throw it."

Martinez could be the Cavaliers' quarterback of the future. With Schaub gone next season, Martinez should have a leg up on true freshman Kevin McCabe, incoming freshman Scott Deke and Notre Dame transfer Chris Olsen.

But that's next year. For now, Martinez simply wants to do his job.

"I'm just waiting for Matt to get healthy," he said. "Until he does, I'm ready to step in and do what I have to do to lead the team. I feel bad for him because this was supposed to be his year. I'm ready to go step in and do the job as I think he would."

i just saw the strangest thing. my plays & writeups were posted at another forum, without me even posting there. does anybody know if they could do that?

2*miami fla.-13(128)--miami is loaded with speed, especially the back 7 on defense. i think that qb berlin is more confident after his initial start last week, & i like gore as their feature back & winslow as a big target. they are going up against a defense that is just returning 3 starters from last years team. i don't see fla. moving the ball on the ground with any consistency & if they can't they will have to rely on any one of 3 green qb's to move the ball. that's alot to ask on the road against an excellent secondary. last year fla. was outscored by an average of 23-22 per game.
here is something that i read i found interesting:
fla. is 0-24 ats in their last 24 su losses & also 4-23-3 ats as an underdog in games they lose su.

good luck

2* fla.st.-13(128)--think bowden & his staff are on a mission to reinstate his team to a top 5 program after two disappointing, for them, seasons. fsu is high on their running backs, jones & booker. also thin that rix is ready to blossom this year. last week maryland played without their star runner, perry & md. gained 112 yds. with a 3.2 yds. per rush. perry might play this week, but it usually takes a few games to be game ready. this game is the 14th game between fla. st. & md. all time & fsu has won the previous 13, with md. getting no closer than 14 points. another tidbit, is that fsu is 11- 1 ats as conf. favorite of less less than 15.

good luck

2*northwestern+10(148)---nw returns 8 starters from last years defense who remembers the beating they took last year from air force by the score of 52-3. this experience should should also make them give a better effort vs. air force's off. also nw has covered 16 of the last 24 as a home dog.

good luck.

2*col.st.+4(140)--the only concern i have about this game is whether csu will have a post col. letdown. but i think that csu is a better team than calif. calif. is returning just 2 starters from last yrs. def. & eventhough cal. dominated so.miss. last week ,they are still giving up an average of 406 yds. per game for the two games they played so far this year & giving up a very high 26.8 per ko return. i think with the combo of van pelt at qb & houston at rb will exploit this def. eventhough last weeks game vs. col. was a high scoring game, csu yielded a little less than 2.5 yds. per rushing attempt. also csu is 13-7 ats on the road the last 3 years.

good luck

2*fsu/osu under 52.5(-143)---know everybody is playing the over tonite, but i think this game will not be the high scoring slugfest everyone else thinks. this game is being played on grass which should slow osu, which plays on carpet, down & don't think with a 2nd string qb, fsu coach, hill will want to trade points with osu. think he will try to slow game down.

good luck
