 I'll admit that I know very little about Wofford & Appalachian State, but it's the early game and currently most offshores have the line @ pick'em. I'm hoping someone could post an opionion and possible give a little analysis.

I took Cleveland +4 @ Chicago in the NBA. Could be a trap, but Bulls don't have anyone to contain Lebron. Both teams are hurting, but Duhon not playing for the Bulls should hurt them.

Hopefully Hawkeye will have something for you, he's the man in this obscure conference and I value his opinion highly.. I 'm considering a play on Appy State as I am in no hurry to back a team that just got beat by The Chitadel.

App Starts Tournament Versus Wofford

by Steve Behr (Watauga Democrat)
March 1, 2006

In a season when no team has emerged as dominant, it may be the year that a team which did not receive an automatic bye into the Southern Conference Tournament prevails with a tournament championship.

It hasn?t happened since the SoCon started awarding byes, though Furman came the closest by reaching the finals in 2002. The Paladins ended up losing to Davidson 62-57.

Appalachian State would like to be the team that makes SoCon history by winning the tournament without the help of a bye. To do that, the eighth-seeded Mountaineers (11-14, 6-8 SoCon) must first beat ninth-seeded Wofford (11-17, 6-9) Thursday in the first round.

Tip-off is 3:30 p.m., at the North Charleston (S.C.) Arena.

?It?s never been done before,? Mountaineers coach Houston Fancher said. ?Because everybody is so even, I think a number of teams playing the first day can get to the finals and I think we?re one of those teams. It?s a matter of who gets hot offensively and makes shots. Great guard play is important and we have good perimeter people.?
?It should be an interesting tournament. Everything is up for grabs.?

Appalachian State goes into the game with some momentum, having won three of its final four games of the regular season. Included was a 75-70 victory over UNC Greensboro back on Feb. 23, Appalachian State?s final game of the regular season.

Since that game, they?ve been concentrating on how to stop Wofford?s inside game of power forward Howard Wilkerson and the outside shooting of 6-foot-3 freshman guard Matt Estep, who buried six 3-pointers in Wofford?s 60-59 win over Appalachian State Feb. 2.

?They all shot well that night,? Mountaineers coach Houston Fancher said. ?They hit 13 threes and (Estep) hit six of them.?

Fancher blamed the loss on complacency, particularly when it came to playing perimeter defense, caused by a 22-13 Mountaineers lead as the reason for the loss.

?We were up 22-13 and we flat-lined,? Fancher said. ?We lost the passion we had and didn?t play hard. We went through the motions.?

Despite that, Appalachian State held a five-point lead with 2:44 left, but saw that evaporate. Fancher responded the next day in practice by taking away the players? practice jerseys, a move he?s made in the past to make a point.

The Mountaineers won?t get them back until they practice Wednesday in Charleston. However, since they were taken away, Appalachian State is 3-2, including a win over North Division champion Elon and a solid road win over Western Carolina.

?We?ve had some really competitive practices the last few days,? Fancher said. ?They know that the next game is potentially their last. I don?t think a lack of effort will be a problem.?

Appalachian State?s recent history with the Terriers is a problem The Mountaineers have lost their last three games with Wofford dating back to 2003-04 season, even though Appalachian holds a 16-8 lead in the series.

Wofford is also coming off a disappointing loss to The Citadel, thus becoming the Bulldogs? lone SoCon victim.

?It may help them refocus,? Fancher suggested. ?Our motivation is that they?ve already beaten us coupled with the fact that we either win or go home. Motivation is not an issue.?

Spang I was thinking the same thing, losing to the Citadel is bad, only concern here is them bouncing back, but I am still leaning towards Appy state.

Flip a coin, not trying to be flip but these two are so close. Where is the money, let's go the other way. Looks like the money will be on APP, Woff or pass.

When I look at how these two have played the last 10 it looks like Woff is playing better even though they lost in (OT) to The Citadel. App only beat them by 1 or 2. I like Woff.

Wofford is done, team and coaching
staff have throwed in white towel. I've
watched them play @ home five or six
games early played some larger d-1 real
good early lost a couple of players and the
season went south. The reason they were
blown out @ home last Sat. the coach started
looking at what he has next season, will give
the return players tour. time today. If they get
behind early the blow out could be on. Also
be very careful if you are looking @ Furman.
This game has trap all over it. This will be like
home game for the Citadel. Could be a real
heartbreaker in SoCon tour.

I was looking at the under 130. These two are lower scoring teams, they do shoot 3's, but the first game in the Charleston Coliseum may cause some poor shooting for a portion of the game. Last year, I believe 3 of the 4 first rounders were low scoring.

AL, the sky is not falling, the end is not as near as you think. Both these teams have won 5 of their L10 and Woff could have won 6 of 10 if they did not get careless last Saturday. I would not call being up by 12 at the 1/2 and losing by 4pts in (OT); throwing in the towel and getting blown out. Get a grip man, take a deep breath and pull yourself together and make the right move. WOFF IS THE PLAY !!!!!!!! Could it have been, they were up and the game didn't mean anything so he took a look and gave some guys a rest for a run in the tournament ?

The first two SoCon games are anyone's gues Appy and Wofford is an even matchup, hence the line...but losing to The Citadel at home is inexcusable.

Some good reasons to take WOOF:

More mature team with 3 Senior starters whereas App St has none

More possessions per game

Better 3-pt shooters and better defenders vs the 3-pt shooters: (very important with teams that shoot alot of threes on a neutral court) and in their first game Wofford shot 56% treys to 44% for App St. at App.St and won the game.

Line opened at Woff - 1 and now App St -1. Vegas line makers liked Wofford to win.

I'll take Wofford. DRE

3 Seniors is very nice in this spot, they could be playing their last game. I like the more possessions. This Dave Eckes is a smart guy. Dave if you see I need help, please chime in anytime. This is the kind of stuff I like. Thanks.

Now the line is Wofford -1. Can't draw anything from that, it has been back and forth all morning.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm still really confused on who to take. I'll probably just take the dog @ tip on the money line and hope for the best. Put a gun to my head and I'd take Wofford based on 3 senior players.

Sometimes the best play is no play, its really a shitty game between two shitty teams. Better stuff later.
