My Ipod Shuffle thinks I'm Gay


Dear Ipod:

After spending a few weeks with you, I am beginng to fear you think I am a gay man. (of course, not that there's anything wrong with that)

I recognize that there are several up tempo dance songs on my playlist, along with a few Madonna and Britney Spears tracks. However, I am curious why whenever I choose the shuffle mode, you select these songs and these songs only to play. I like Madonna, I do... I just don't need 10 consecutive hours of her. And yes, the Pet Shop Boys are fun, but I don't really want to hear "West End Girls" on a 30 minute loop.

The first time I thought it was just a coincidence, but lately I have been wondering if perhaps you think I spend my entire day singing and dancing like some flamboyant queen or like Ellen on that ridiculous American Express commercial. (Again, not there's anything wrong with that).

Anyway, if there is any chance you could include a little Wilco or Arcade Fire, next time you choose the mix, I would be very appreciate.

WHAT IS A BEANTOWNBEAR ?

Well, the "Bear Movement" (if you can call it that) started around Boston when husky, hairy gay beaner felt compelled to carve his own niche into society.

Beaner a blue-collar worker & average Joe didn't socialize or identify with other gay men, because he didn't fit the stereotype. He often knew he preferred men, but didn't think he was gay because of predominant gay stereotypes of what gay men are "supposed" to be like.

These stereotypes, which are perpetuated in the straight and gay media alike, seem to demonstrate that in order to be a gay man you must be buff, hairless, clean-shaven, and overly image-conscious. An image that is unachievable if God intended you be 5'10", 215 pounds, hairy, and just plain happy about it. For many of these men, if they tried to socialize with other gay men, they were often ostracized because they didn't look gay.

It was especially difficult for young gay beaner, because it's hard enough to come to terms with his sexuality, let alone to feel outcast by both your straight & gay peers. What about gay men who prefer larger hairy gay men?

In the early 90's the Local BBSs (and later the Internet) became a primary forum for these men to communicate with each other. It wasn't long before beaner realized that he was not alone. Not only was he "not alone", there were thousands more out there like him.

Naturally, everyone likes to be part of a group and have friends, so taking a cue from the gay leather community, beaner started to find clubs for furry and/or husky gay men and those that prefer them.
