I'm still thinking about this..
I'm still thinking about this..
While it was innovative, well within the rules.. well, it doesn't feel right to take advantage of a loophole in the rules.
However, I know there have been circumstances where other coaches do it.
How about when a team intentionally takes a safety? Within the rules, but not trying to win by doing so. Yes, it may make sense for the team doing it, but so did the kickoff strategy.
Or taking a delay of game and letting the clock run down?
Bottom line - he took a penalty while running time down.... I guess it isn't much different than some of those other situations.
The reason why people are up in arms is that nobody has thought of it before, so it has shock value I guess.
So, while uncoventional, I uess I'm ok with it if other "negative" plays are allowed, such as intentially taking a safety, or letting a team score a TD when you are down by 1 late in the game (to try to catch up by getting a TD and 2 pt late in game).
I'm just saying - there are many situations where teams manipulate situations in the game, not putting their best effort and doing negative things, to give them a better chance to win the game.
How is this different?
