THE OPENING TIP
Portland State will go on the road for the next two weeks with an opportunity to break out of a logjam in the middle of the Big Sky Conference standings.

The Vikings had a disappointing home weekend last Thursday and Saturday, losing to Weber State and Idaho State. However, at 2-3 in Big Sky play, they sit in the middle of eight teams separated by only a game-and-a-half in the standings.

Montana (6-0) and Weber State (5-0) are undefeated in Big Sky Conference games. After that, the third through 10th-place teams are only a game-and-a-half apart. Winning the Big Sky is always the goal, but the top four teams in the standings will get a first-round bye in this year's newly configured post-season tournament scheduled for Reno, NV. At the moment, getting into the top four is Portland State's goal.

The Vikings will take a 6-10, 2-3 record to Sacramento State this Saturday night. The Hornets are 8-8 overall, but just 1-4 in the Big Sky and tied for 11th. One of those losses came at the hands of the Vikings on Jan. 2 in Portland, 76-68. Saturday's game will be at the Hornets Nest starts at 7:05 p.m. Live video, audio and stats can be found at GoViks.com.

PSU is 2-6 on the road this season. The Vikings have lost three of their last four games overall. Sacramento State boasts a 6-2 home record. The Hornets have lost four of five overall, and six of their last eight.

As travel partners, the Vikings and Hornets have thus far played the same Big Sky Conference schedule.

COMING UP
Portland State is on the road again next week, playing at Eastern Washington (9-8/3-2, Jan. 28) and Idaho (11-7, 3-2, Jan. 30). Beginning Feb. 4, six of the final 10 Big Sky games will be played at home.
