ISU men look for home win streak against Portland in Reed tonight

By Connor Doyle - Assistant Sports Editor

POCATELLO - The Idaho State men's basketball team was thrown a hanging slider by its schedule last week, and hit it out of the park. Now, the Bengals need to see if they can turn a blowout 109-60 victory over Montana Tech and a weekend off into a home winning streak.

That quest begins tonight against the University of Portland in Reed Gym at 7:05 p.m.

ISU (2-2) shot a ridiculous 66 percent from the field in Wednesday's victory over the Orediggers, including a first-half mark of 71 percent. It was salve for a team wounded both by a tough overtime loss to Southern Utah the game before, and the even tougher loss of junior wing David Schroeder for the season to a torn ACL.

The Pilots (5-2) used a similarly stunning shooting performance to beat Portland State of the Big Sky, Saturday, 84-72. In the first half of that game, Portland shot at a 69-percent clip, and finished the game with a 57-percent mark from the field.

Needless to say, tonight's tilt will likely come down to which team can keep that up.

"For us to shoot the ball like we did was exceptional,"said ISU head coach Doug Oliver after the Montana Tech game. "We needed a feel-good game. But next week, we won't face play like that."

The Pilots are led by point guard and 2003-04 first team All-West Coast Conference selection Pooh Jeter, who's averaging 16.6 points per game so far this season. Jeter was the driving force behind Portland's win over the Vikings, scoring 19 points and dishing out three assists.

Jeter's the centerpiece of the Pilot's three-guard offense, but it's 6-foot-8 forward Dreshawn Vance - a WCC all-freshman selection in 2003-04 - that could be the X-factor against the Bengals. Despite scoring only two points against Portland State, Vance is still the team's second-leading scorer with an average of nine points per game, and leads the team in rebounds with seven per.

The Bengals will counter with a lineup chalk full of players coming off career nights. Senior center Jesse Smith dropped a career-high 21 points, senior guard Jeff Gardner tallied a career-high 14 assists (in addition to five treys) and freshman wing Logan Kinghorn enjoyed a breakout performance with 18 points in 22 minutes, all against the Orediggers.

Should the Bengals win, the onslaught isn't even close to over. Idaho comes into Reed on Wednesday for a game, before ISU gets a shot at revenge against Southern Utah on Saturday.

"(This) week is a big week for us with three home games,"Gardner said. "We want to come and play our best ball (this) week and build on the momentum from (the Montana Tech) game."
