Don't rule out the Subaru Outback or the Subaru Forester. Lots of space. Reliable. Very solid and rigid.
The Outback has about as much interior space as a Jimmy or a Blazer, but is a much better vehicle in terms of problems, interior layout, comfort, ride. I think used outbacks are more expensive, but that's for a good reason. Great for dogs and kids.
I drive a '97 outback and its the best car I've ever had. all wheel drive. anti-lock brakes, a flat 4 2.4 liter which has enough power for anything I want to do and handles well because of the low center of gravity and "wheels that slip to the wheels that grip" technlogy or whatever they call it. very safe, too, for wife and kids.
if you're going the sedan route, the honda accord is similar to the camry, no? I always had the impression that they are reliable.
