I received this E-mail, I do not know if the info contained in it is true. I do not get prescription drugs on a regular basis, but if anyone out there does and wants to research the validity of this E-mail so they may save some money, let the rest of us know if this E-mail is factual or not...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Monday night (July 22, 2002), Steve Wilson, an investigative reporter for channel 7 News in Detroit, did a story on generic drug price gouging by pharmacies. He found in his investigation, that some of these generic drugs were marked up as much as
3,000% or more.
Yes, that's not a typo.... three thousand percent!

Mr. Wilson did a thorough research, and checked out all the major drugstore chains, discount chains, independent pharmacies, and even checked on some Canadian pharmacies.

So often, we blame the drug companies for the high cost of drugs, and usually rightfully so. But in this case, the fault clearly lies with the pharmacies themselves. For example, if you had to buy a prescription drug, and bought the name brand, you might pay $100.00 for 100 pills.
The pharmacist might tell you that if you get the generic equivalent, they would only cost $80.00, making you think you are "saving" $20.00 What the pharmacist is not telling you is that those 100 generic pills may have only cost him $10.00!

At the end of the report, one of the anchors asked Mr. Wilson whether or not there were any pharmacies that did not adhere to this practice, and he said that Costco consistently charged little over their cost for the generic drugs. They gave the link to Costco, which I will include here, so that you can go and check prices for yourself.
www.costco.com >Costco Online.

I went to the Costco site, where you can look up any drug, and get it's online price. It says that the in-store prices are consistent with the online prices. I was appalled. Just to give you one example from my own experience, I had to use the drug, Compazine, which helps prevent nausea in chemo patients. I used the generic equivalent, which cost $54.99 for 60 pills at CVS. I checked the price at Costco, and I could have bought 100 pills for $19.89.
For 145 of my pain pills, I paid $72.57. I could have got 150 at Costco for $28.08.

I would like to mention, that although Costco is a "membership" type store, you do NOT have to be a member to buy prescriptions there, as it is a federally regulated substance. You just tell them at the door that you wish to use the pharmacy, and they will let you in.

It is true, but make sure you are comparing apples to apples when reading about drug prices.

First of all, you are dealing with cash prices when comparing those numbers. Meaning that there is no reimbursement from a third party or insurance coverage...where your co-pay comes into play.

Secondly, quite a few insurers are starting to place Brand name products on their 1st and 2nd tier levels (cheaper prices for patients) than their generic equivalent. (I am more familiar with my particular type of products being in Women's Health Carem where the price gouging from pharmacies is atrocious!) Reason being not as muc h competition, so prices are only $3-5 differnce between the two.

That is the short answer. but I will leave you with this:

Cash prices and Co-pay prices are different for almost every class of drug. Check prices on both, in some insurance plans if you are asked if you want a Generic, the price may be more expensive than a branded product. (Just did some pharmacy work, and this was the case with Medica, and the Blues (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) Make sure you ask, and have them run it through your insurance card.

If it is a critical dose drug, and not one of just Tylenol, I would suggest going for the branded products at all times. (If you can afford it and indeed if it is more expensive) simpley because generics are +/- 20% different in the amount of drug per pill etc. That is important when it comes to total health care! (I deal with OBGYN's on a daily basis, and they do not right generic Rx's actually they despise them..leads to numerous callbacks form issues, as well as Rx coverage issues.

FP and GP a little different because they prescribe so many drugs, but they then use their Dickey book or similiar Computer program on their Palm. Depending on the diagnosis, their knowledge of generics and branded products, etc. you may see them be ok with generics. Specialty Dr.'s tend to stay away!

Hope this helps some....

Dawgball..there are several out there, not one truly is better than the other unless your wife is deficinet in something. Below is a list of names of Pre-Natals I found online, but before starting any vitamins (and I am sure you have done this with your wife already) make sure that your Dr. recommends going on them, and which type she would prefer you go on.

There are certain vitamins your growing fetus does not need an over supply of, and could become toxic. Not to scare you as it typically takes a larger amount than i vitamin pill a day, but it is something that your Dr. should be aware of, and hopefully they will tell you which on they prefer.

Here is the list:

Aminatal Plus
? Aminate
? Chromagen OB
? Citracal Prenatal Rx
? Duet
? Equi-Natal Rx
? Equinatal 90
? Fem-Natal
? Lacotcal-F
? Materna
? Maternal 90
? Maternity
? Mission Prenatal
? Mynatal
? Natachew
? Natafort
? NatalCare
? Natalins
? Natarex
? Natatab Rx
? Nestabs
? Niferex PN Forte
? NutriNate
? Precare
? Premesis Rx
? Prenate Ultra
? Prenavite
? Preterna
? Strongstart
? Stuartnatal Plus
? Ultra Natal Care
? Zenate

ALso if you haven't already registered, this is a great site for expecting fathers! http://www.babycenter.com

I would definitely have the e-mails updates sent to you, they have not sold my e-mail address, but it keeps you informed every step of the way of what your wife is going through, as well as tips for you. Trust me some of those help! LOL!!! It will also continue after your child is born, where mine is now 17 months, it is great to see the expectations for your child and where they are in relation to it. Don't worry if they are ahead of it or behind because it all equals out.

May you be as blessed as we were on our first child! Any other questions feel free to ask!

Damn! Your kid is already 17 months. I would have guessed that it was about 6 months ago when you announced the arrival!

The vitamin that she is taking now is one that our doc recommended, so we'll just stick with that one.

Thanks for the info

OB/GYN with Nurse Practitioner. Our first two visits were with the NP. Our next is with the doc. She is 11 weeks as of right now, so we are still a long ways off. We are not going to find out the sex (as of right now).

LOL! Don't do it! Don't do it!1

My wife wanted to know..I wanted it as a surpise at the end. (I thoought for sure we were having a boy, as I wanted a boy first!)

SO I was teasing my wife, I know what sex our baby is...blah blah blah...she finally got real serious sat me down on the bed on a Sunday afternoon only 3 days after finding out. Honey..I have to tell you! Finally after mucho haggling I gave in, she said it was a girl...

Slightly devastated as I really thought it was a son! No big deal, I just want a healthy child, so I started pre[paring for this yet unseen beautfil girl....

Lo and behold delivery day comes, and I HAVE a son!

Talk about a roller coaster, and in the tech's mind she told us 99.9% positive with the view her and my wife go it was a girl! Go figure!!!

Nevertheless, we are quite hapy, and it is a life changing event!!

GL on the months ahead!

You are correct about insurance co-pay. Mind is $20 for real stuff and $10 for generic. I agree buy the real.

Here is a warning to everyone with a co-pay.

I went to Walgreens to have a script filled. I dont know why but for some reason I asked how much the pills were if I had to buy them without insurance. I guess it was a shits and giggles thing.
Come to find out that my co-pay was $20.00 but the script only cost $11.00  I complained about it and told them it wasnt right so I only paid the $11.00. If I wouldnt have asked I would have paid the higher amount.

So, make sure you ask how much the script costs if you wouldnt have had insurance before you pay your deductible otherwise you may be getting ripped off.

I will be honest with you, it pays to know the people that are filling your prescriptions, this happens all of the time. Usually though if the Pharmacist knows the p;lan and it is a popluar insurere and drug, they'll let you know...

Thanks for bringing that up!

Guess there's lots of people like me. I'm on 2 drugs and neither are on the insurance formulary

I have to pay the cash price for one because my non-form drug price is 35 bucks and the cash price is 28, so it's a little cheaper paying cash.

My Celebrex, which I take twice a day, gets me charged a double copay because they only approve 1 pill a day. What a crock of doo that is!! It should only cost 25 bucks a month, but it costs 50.

Six Five that's BS. If you need what Doc said. You should have co pay. Watch that celebrex clsoe. To of my friends were on it and started to have bleeding problems. Had to get off fast. Sad thing was it work well for them. Untill that happened.

I don't know about you, but when I get Rx's filled and I pay, it usually states on the document sheet how much you save by using your insurance, whether it's generic or the real thing. I also pay $10 for generic and $20 for the real chit. I read all my document sheets and compare the generic to the real and most the time it's cheaper to pay for generic, but I guess it depends on who you are and your preferences.

Rx drugs are the best b/c the best minds go into making them...

Does you Doctor prescribe it as a "Prior Authorization" signalling to the insurance company that he is overriding your Insurance because it is being taken as a chronic drug, and your physical state deems it so?

SOmetimes when that happens, the insurance company will then pick up the tab...I would inquire about it with the Doc, and then brign the issue up with your insurance comapny again. Especially with the Doc providing some type of write-up specifying why you need to be on Celebrex twice a day! I assume you are taking 200mg 2x a day.

Also check into another alternative to Celebrex as their are a couple out there, and see if they will pay for that 2x a day.

One last thing for everyone, make sure to call your insurance company and see how many pills you are allowed to get for a co-pay. A majority of plans will allow only a 30 day supply for one copay, but some of the more beneficial patient benefit plans out there wil allow you to get 100 pills (max) or a 90 day supply all for one co-pay. Basically giving you 2-3 months of pills for one co-payl They won't tell you until you ask however, or read it.

Also if your benefit packages allows, make sure to fill your account with extra pre-tax dollars to help pay for the cost of your co-pays and office visits etc. just another way to ease your tacx burden on things you have to pay for out of pocket!

Have a great day!

celebrex was pre-authorized, mail in order is 50 a month, just like if I get it locally, I do take 200 twice a day, and there's no way around paying the double copay. I have spent hours on this, and I am educated in this area, so I'm not going in blind. In fact, I know much more than the phone dorks who answer at ADVANCE Rx or at my insurance company. That frustrates the crap out of me too. They just aren't going to pay for it except with me first paying a double copay. I have had patients, djv, with the bleeding, but so far, no trouble here (been on it for 3.5 years). It still helps, so no way I want to go off of it. Also, they won't pay for any better for equal doses of Vioxx or Bextra which are the 2 similar cox drugs, I've checked. I get 60 pills max of this drug in a 28 day period (don't understand the 28 thing, should be 30), but that takes 2 copays. Instead of charging me a double copay for a 3 month supply for a total of 50 which is what the plan says, I am paying it every month.
