Preview: Angels (78-52) at Mariners (68-64)

Game: 2
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: September 01, 2009 10:10 PM EDT

While the Seattle Mariners offense should improve with Ichiro Suzuki and Adrian Beltre back in the lineup, it may still not be enough to compete with the Los Angeles Angels.

After being shut out for the second consecutive game, the Mariners look to bounce back and help their fading playoff hopes when they continue a three-game series with visiting Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The AL West-leading Angels (78-52) continued their tear at the plate Monday, beating Seattle (68-64) 10-0. It was their fourth win in six contests and gave them a six-game lead over Texas and an 11-game cushion on Seattle in the division.

Although it may be too late to make a run at the postseason, the Mariners will get two of their best hitters back Tuesday. Suzuki returns after missing eight games with tightness in his calf while Beltre is expected to come off the disabled list from a bruised testicle.

Suzuki, who expressed frustration with how conservative the team was being with his injury, is seeking to become the first player to have nine consecutive seasons with at least 200 hits. He is 16 shy. The right fielder would also tie the AL record for most 200-hit seasons held by Ty Cobb, one behind Pete Rose's major league record.

Manager Don Wakamatsu said Suzuki wanted to play Monday, but he elected to hold him out another game.

"We felt one more day would help us a whole lot for everyone to feel safer," he said. "I could sit there and go 'Oh, we're playing the Angels today, we need you in there - and we will risk the fact that you might get hurt again.' We're not going to do that."

Suzuki is hitting .375 versus the Angels this season and has a 13-game hitting streak against them dating back to last season. Beltre, who hasn't played since Aug. 12, is hitting .235 against Los Angeles.

The Mariners will need both to pick up the offense, which has been held to four total hits in the last two games. The Angels, meanwhile, have scored 33 runs in their last four contests. Vladimir Guerrero homered twice and Juan Rivera hit a three-run shot Monday.

Guerrero, who is hitting .341 in the last 10 games, has three multi-home run games this season and 20 with the Angels to tie Tim Salmon's team record.

"He's incredible," Mariners catcher Rob Johnson told his team's official Web site. "He's a bad-ball hitter, he's a good-ball hitter. ... He's on time right now and barreling balls up."

Los Angeles will try to win its third straight when it sends Ervin Santana (7-7, 5.94 ERA) to the mound.

Santana had his four-game winning streak snapped Thursday after he allowed two runs in six innings of a 2-0 loss to Oakland. The right-hander has a 2.67 ERA in his last four starts.

Santana is 6-3 with a 4.36 ERA against Seattle, including 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA this season.

The Mariners will counter with rookie Doug Fister (1-1, 3.42), who is making his fifth start and sixth appearance this year.

Fister, who is facing the Angels for the first time, struggled Thursday against Kansas City, yielding five runs and three homers over six innings of an 8-4 loss. The right-hander had a 2.33 ERA in his first three starts.

LA Angels of Anaheim (78-52) at Seattle Mariners (68-64), 10:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: LA Angels - Ervin Santana (7-7, 5.94) Seattle - Doug Fister (1-1, 3.42)

Ervin Santana will attempt to continue his second-half turnaround and move the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim another step closer to an American League West division title when the talented pitcher takes the mound for tonight's clash with the Seattle Mariners from Safeco Field.

After compiling a subpar 1-5 record and 7.81 earned run average in eight starts during an injury-plagued first three months of the season, Santana has gone 6-2 in eight starts since the All-Star break. The 2008 All-Star was particularly good in August, amassing a 4-1 mark with a 3.27 ERA in five starts over the course of the month.

Santana is coming off a tough-luck loss his last time out, but still held Oakland to two runs and struck out six in six innings during the Angels' 2-0 defeat to the Athletics last Thursday. The right-hander had ripped off four consecutive winning decision prior to that setback.

The 26-year-old owns a 6-3 record with a 4.36 ERA in 14 career starts against Seattle, including a 3-2 mark in six previous trips to the Safeco Field mound. However, Santana was rocked for eight runs and 10 hits by the Mariners in a 5 1/3-inning no-decision at Angel Stadium on May 31.

He'll try to follow two outstanding performances by his teammates in Anaheim's last two games. After John Lackey delivered eight innings of one-run ball in Sunday's 9-1 victory over Oakland, Joe Saunders tossed seven scoreless frames to lead the Angels and received a wealth of offensive support in a 10-0 rout of the Mariners in the opener of this three-game series.

Saunders yielded just three hits and three walks before giving way to rookie Trevor Bell, who did not allow a hit over the final two innings to complete the shutout.

Saunders improved to 7-1 lifetime against Seattle with Monday's gem and is 3-0 with an 0.43 ERA versus the Mariners this season.

"They always bring out the best in me," said Saunders. "I like to pitch [at Safeco Field]. It's a good ball park and we seem to play good baseball up here."

Vladimir Guerrero was the hitting star for Anaheim, with the former AL MVP going 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and four RBI. Juan Rivera added a three- run shot on the night and Howie Kendrick finished 2-for-4 with two RBI in the Angels' 13-hit attack.

The win extended Anaheim's lead over second-place Texas to six games in the AL West, with the Rangers losing to Toronto on Monday.

Mariners starter Luke French was tagged for seven runs and 10 hits over the first five innings to take the loss.

Seattle was shut out for the second consecutive game, with the club mustering a mere one hit off Kansas City ace Zack Greinke in a 3-0 defeat to the Royals on Sunday. The team does expect to get some reinforcements to its struggling lineup tonight, however, with both Ichiro Suzuki and Adrian Beltre set to return to action.

Suzuki, the American League's second-leading hitter this season with a .359 average, has sat out Seattle's last eight contests due to a strained left calf. Beltre, sidelined since August 12 with a bruised right testicle, batted .444 (16-for-36) during an eight-game hitting streak prior to being placed on the disabled list.

Those two hope to provide some offense for rookie Doug Fister, who will take his fifth turn since joining the Seattle rotation last month.

Fister has gone 1-1 with a respectable 3.55 ERA through his first four starts as a major leaguer, but was hit hard in an 8-4 loss to Kansas City last Thursday at Safeco Field. The towering right-hander served up three home runs to the Royals and gave up a total of five runs in a six-inning stint.

The 25-year-old, a seventh-round choice of the Mariners out of Fresno State in the 2006 draft, is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance at Safeco Field this year. Fister will be opposing the Angels for the first time tonight.

These AL West foes have split 14 meetings so far this season, with Anaheim owning a 5-3 edge in the games played at Safeco Field. The Angels are 18-9 in the Emerald City since the start of the 2007 campaign.
