FIVE THINGS TO WATCH

BACK IN FORM: The Packers caught a break in the second meeting between the two teams last season because MLB E.J. Henderson went on injured reserve after the fourth game with a foot injury. Slow-footed Napoleon Harris, now on the street, was re-signed to replace him. "He's come back and is playing very well," an offensive assistant for a recent Vikings' opponent said. "Sure tackler. He can be a mismatch on your backs in pass protection. They do a nice job keeping blockers off him. He's relentless. He, 94 (Pat Williams), 93 (Kevin Williams), 69 (Jared Allen) and 26 (Antoine Winfield) are their really good players." Playing every snap, Henderson leads the team in tackles with 22, 10 more than anyone else. "That's the bell cow of that defense," one scout said. "When he takes on blocks and he's making a tackle there's some punch behind it. Tough guy. Really good." Added another assistant: "He's their quiet leader. He will try to blow it up. Good in coverage, too."

TOP TARGET: The minute that the Vikings drafted Phil Loadholt in the second round they made him their starting RT. He was the 54th overall pick; when Green Bay traded up to take Clay Matthews at 26, they gave up the 41st choice and didn't draft again until 109. The massive rookie has played to mixed reviews. "I thought he was the worst of their five starters," one scout said. "He's really big and has long arms but he's not that great of an athlete at all. He'll give up the edge. He's an OK run blocker. He has size so he can plow you that way. But as far as punch and really getting movement, that's not what he does." Loadholt played LT at Oklahoma the past two seasons. "I wouldn't say he's a liability," another personnel man said. "He's kind of a normal, everyday guy at right tackle. Is he a guy you can attack and should be able to beat? Yes. They don't ask that offensive line to do much. Just kind of get a body on a body. They're so big, they can survive."

FIRST SHOT: The Packers will get their first look at rookie Percy Harvin, the 22nd pick. "They're getting him involved," one scout said. "I don't know how much of the offense he has down yet. He's extremely dangerous. He's not a refined route runner. There's some things in his game he will have to improve on as he becomes a pro. But when he has the ball in his hands he's a 'wow' guy. He's a game-changer." Harvin returned a kickoff 101 yards for a TD against the 49ers. "He's just learning how to play," an opposing assistant said. "He's very quick and has great speed. You miss a tackle on him, you will pay dearly."

BACK END: After letting SS Darren Sharper walk to New Orleans as an unrestricted free agent, the Vikings promoted Tyrell Johnson to start opposite former Bengal Madieu Williams. "The coverage of their safeties is where teams look to go," an opposing assistant said. "That's where they have their possible issues . . . if you can take advantage of it and get the ball out." Williams was described by another assistant as "like a torpedo. He can blow you up but he can miss you, too. Good cover guy. I'd take Williams over Johnson." Johnson, a second-round pick in 2008, scored the NFL average of 19 on the Wonderlic intelligence test. "I think he is a liability," one scout said. "If you ask him to cover just one guy, a tight end or a running back, that's what he does best in coverage. If he has to go back and play center field or back-half coverages, I just don't think he anticipates, reacts or plays the ball like the good safeties do."

FAVRE FODDER: Brett Favre debuts against the Packers. "We played him (late) last year and he looked tired and slow," one opposing assistant said. "He looks more energized now. He knows what he's doing. He moves well enough in the pocket to protect himself." Favre underwent arm surgery during the off-season but is showing no ill effects. "Can he throw the deep ball like he once did?" one scout said. "No. He's not going to throw the 50- , 60-yard fade the way he used to. There's some limits to that. But he can throw that intermediate post, the deep out, all those balls. His exit plan now is to step up into the pocket. If they make him try to run out of the pocket, exit left, exit right, he's going to have trouble. But as long as they give him room to step up he's fine."

Gameday: Vikings vs. Green Bay

Running game trumps pass Favre undoubtedly would love to repeat the heroics that helped beat the 49ers. But what Favre wants to do and what he needs to do are separate things. The Packers are ranked 23rd in the NFL against the run, surrendering an average of 128.7 yards, and given that the Vikings possess the league's best running back in Adrian Peterson, it's a no-brainer that Minnesota would go with its bread-and-butter in this game. Peterson has rushed for 100 yards in three of his four games against Green Bay.

Doin' the sack dance Aaron Rodgers won't just be feeling the pressure of trying to beat his former teammate. The Packers quarterback has been sacked 12 times this season and has scrambled 15 times for 88 yards. Green Bay's inability to protect its quarterback is good news for a Vikings defensive line that is tied for sixth in the league with 12 sacks. Keep an eye on Vikings end Ray Edwards and Packers right tackle Allen Barbre. Barbre gave up two sacks and three quarterback hits in the Packers' opener against Chicago.

Carrying the load Rookie right tackle Phil Loadholt will get a good test as the Vikings face a 3-4 defense for the third time in four weeks. One of Loadholt's primary responsibilities will be accounting for Aaron Kampman, who was shifted from defensive end to left outside linebacker. Kampman had his first sack of the season in Week 3 against the Rams and could create problems because of the unpredictably of blitzes. Last season, Kampman had 2.5 sacks against the Vikings playing defensive end.

Woodson, Favre go eye-to-eye Cornerback Charles Woodson has been a main beneficiary of the Packers' switch to a system that enables him to read the quarterback instead of focusing on man-to-man coverage. The 12-year veteran is tied for the NFL lead with three interceptions and returned one 37 yards for a touchdown in Week 2 against the Bengals. Woodson, battling a foot injury, is fifth among active players with 39 picks, and would love to add to that total against his former teammate.

The stat 31 Teams that Brett Favre has beaten during his 18-plus NFL seasons. The only team Favre never has beaten is the Packers. And, of course, he never has played against them. Until now.

Green Bay Gazette: 3 keys to the Vikings game

Three keys to Monday night's Packers-Vikings game in Minneapolis:

1. Blocking Vikings DE Jared Allen

The Vikings have watched the videotape of Daryn Colledge filling in for Chad Clifton at left tackle and no doubt are trying to figure out ways to get right defensive end Jared Allen isolated on him as much as possible.

Allen is one of the NFL?s best outside rushers, and his 30 sacks in 2007 and 2008 combined ranks second in the league behind only Dallas? DeMarcus Ware. Allen, 27, remains a major threat and has two sacks this season.

Assuming Clifton doesn?t play ? he didn?t practice all week, so it appears unlikely ? Colledge will face as big a challenge as possible filling in, because the noise in the Metrodome will mean he has to try to get a jump on the snap from a silent count rather than Aaron Rodgers? cadence.

The Packers probably will have to give him some blocking help to keep Allen at bay.

2. Stopping Vikings WR Percy Harvin

The Vikings? best weapon is halfback Adrian Peterson, but they have another dynamic player in rookie receiver Percy Harvin.

Harvin is a playmaker who will line up at flanker, halfback and even quarterback in the Wildcat formation.

When Harvin is in the slot, the Packers usually will be in their nickel defense, so cornerback Charles Woodson will be on him (Tramon Williams replaces Woodson at left cornerback in the nickel, and Woodson moves inside to nickel back). That?s an intriguing matchup with a savvy 32-year-old cornerback who?s on top of his game against one of the more dynamic young players in the league.
3. Packers LB Aaron Kampman vs. Vikings RT Phil Loadholdt

Aaron Kampman rang up his first regular-season sack as an outside linebacker last week and might have a matchup he can exploit this week in Minnesota right tackle Phil Loadholdt, a rookie second-round draft pick.

Loadholdt is a huge man (he's listed at 6-foot-8 and 343 pounds) with good potential, but he?s also learning the ropes and isn't particularly agile. Kampman?s precise techniques and detailed film study could give him a big edge.

Pregame notes: Clifton won't play; Rodgers a captain

Chad Clifton won't play tonight.

The Packers' left tackle, listed as questionable with an ankle injury, is on the inactive list for tonight's game against Minnesota. That means Daryn Colledge will make his second consecutive start at left tackle and get the primary task of dealing with Vikings standout pass-rusher Jared Allen. Just like last week, Jason Spitz moves to left guard for Colledge and Scott Wells replaces Spitz at center.

Also inactive for the Packers: S Atari Bigby (knee), RB Brandon Jackson (ankle), CB Brandon Underwood, FB Quinn Johnson, T Breno Giacomini, DE Michael Montgomery and OLB Jeremy Thompson (knee).

All five Packers listed as probable on the injury report -- DE Cullen Jenkins (groin), WR Greg Jennings (wrist), DE Johnny Jolly (abdomen), DL B.J. Raji (ankle) and CB Charles Woodson (foot) -- are active as expected.

* QB Aaron Rodgers is one of the Packers' captains tonight, along with LOLB Aaron Kampman and ILB Desmond Bishop. That means we will get a handshake between Rodgers and Vikings QB Brett Favre, who is a seasonlong captain for the Vikings.

Vikings wearing throwback jerseys tonight.

Reynaud not playing means that Bernard Berrian should handle punts. But Jaymar Johnson could get a shot. Jamyar is active tonight.
