Preview: Yankees (103-59) at Angels (97-65)

Date: October 22, 2009 7:57 PM EDT

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - When Derek Jeter recalls the last time the New York Yankees got this close to the World Series, he gets chills down his spine that have nothing to do with the cold he's fighting.

``If you have the opportunity to get something over with, you'd like to do it,' the New York captain said. ``It's not always going to happen.'

Although the Yankees have a strong record in potential closeout playoff games over their peerless history, the 2004 AL championship series is a prodigious hole in their reputation that only a record 40th AL pennant could begin to cover. Up 3-0, New York lost four straight to the Boston Red Sox in an unprecedented collapse, and the Yankees hadn't been that close to the World Series since - until now.

They get the first of three shots at a closeout victory over the struggling Angels in Game 5 of the ALCS on Thursday night, with A.J. Burnett facing Los Angeles ace John Lackey.

After half a decade and several hundred million dollars' worth of premium free-agent shopping, most of the Yankees who have rolled through six wins in their first seven postseason games this fall don't share Jeter's memories of 2004.

Manager Joe Girardi understands the history, but prefers to focus on the future.

``There's a lot of different faces,' Girardi said. ``You look at our rotation, CC (Sabathia) wasn't here, A.J. wasn't here. You look at the bullpen, and I believe Mo (Mariano Rivera) was the only guy that was here. It's a different scenario, but we understand who the Angels are.'

Before a light workout at sun-kissed Angel Stadium on Wednesday, Girardi and the Yankees were modest about their chances of getting that last win and steaming back onto baseball's biggest stage after a six-year absence. Their play in this postseason so far has done all their bragging for them.

With big-money newcomers Sabathia and Burnett joining Andy Pettitte in a dynamite three-man rotation, backed by 2004 survivor Alex Rodriguez leading the offense, the current Yankees have shown no indication of slowing down.

After they missed the playoffs last fall for the first time in Jeter's era, the Yankees have racked up baseball's best record before rolling to the brink of a pennant against the Angels, who were second-best behind New York in the regular-season standings as well.

``Well, any time you can add the top three free agents, it's going to be better,' outfielder Johnny Damon deadpanned. ``(Sabathia, Burnett and Mark Teixeira) took us from missing the playoffs by six games last year to being pretty dominant.'

The Yankees have held a 3-1 lead in an ALCS six times since Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte and Jorge Posada joined the roster in the mid-1990s. New York closed it out immediately three times, waited for the sixth game once - and then there was 2004.

But these Yankees are well positioned to capitalize on their three chances to finish off Los Angeles. Nothing in the ALCS to date suggests the Yankees' pitchers will have much trouble with the Angels, whose normally productive lineup is batting .201 against New York.

After a 10-1 rout in Game 4, it's also tough to imagine New York's sluggers slowing down. Rodriguez, Jeter and Posada are in the midst of outstanding postseasons, and the Yankees have 14 homers among their 67 hits in seven playoff games.

``It's like every day, you're looking to somebody to your right or left and saying, 'Do you believe this guy?'' Burnett said. ``'I mean, have you ever seen a guy like this guy?' That's a handful of guys on this team. I've played with some good players, but it's like the guys on this squad, when the stage gets bigger and the situation gets bigger, they perform better. It never ceases to amaze me what can happen.'

Six of 28 teams in the Angels' position have rallied from a 3-1 deficit in a league championship series - most recently in 2007, when the Boston Red Sox came back against Sabathia and Cleveland on the way to a title. Including the World Series, 11 of 69 teams that fell into a 3-1 hole have made the comeback.

``The mountain is big, period,' Angels outfielder Torii Hunter said. ``But we know baseball can turn around at any time. ... We've been wanting that since our first game (against the Yankees). We haven't quite got there yet, but it's getting late. That bell is about to ring, so it's time to get it done.'

Pitching hasn't been the Angels' biggest woe, even given the Yankees' 10-run outburst in Game 3, which only got out of hand in the late innings. Los Angeles can't hit against the Yankees, scraping the Mendoza Line while scoring just 10 runs in the series' 42 innings.

``We're trying to do too much with runners in scoring position,' said Bobby Abreu, who's batting .125 against his former team. ``We're trying to drive in runs no matter what, and sometimes we swing at bad pitches. Tomorrow is a tough situation for us.'

Burnett is still looking for his first playoff victory despite pitching fairly well in his last two starts. He got a no-decision in Game 2 despite allowing just three hits and two runs while pitching into the seventh inning of a contest that eventually went 310 minutes and 13 innings.

``This is why I signed - the opportunity to pitch in the postseason,' said Burnett, who never pitched in the playoffs for Florida or Toronto. ``The first year over here, I have an opportunity, so I'm taking full advantage of it.'

Sharps on Yanks and FSU-UNC over

Sharps on Yanks and FSU-UNC over

Sharps on Yanks and FSU-UNC over
.

Florida State Seminoles at North Carolina Tar Heels

Where the line opened: UNC -2.5

Where it stands now: UNC -2.5

What are the sharps backing: Over 47

Over/Under movement: 47 to 48.5

What the book is rooting for: UNC and the under. Sixty-eight percent of action on the spread is backing FSU while 63 percent of total action is on the Over.

Injury Report:

FSU: LB Dekoda Watson (groin) and CB Patrick Robinson (ankle) are questionable.

UNC: WR Joshua Adams (shoulder) is questionable and TE Zack Pianalto (leg) is probable.

Comments: Bobby Bowden has never lost four in a row before, but that will happen if his Seminoles do not emerge victorious tonight. Can't expect North Carolina to feel sorry for the old ball coach, as Florida State has won nine of the past 10 times they have faced the Tar Heels.

Couple of tough teams to figure out. Florida State beats BYU on the road, then loses to South Florida at home. UNC's scores a nice opening week victory, winning at Connecticut, then it loses earlier this month at home to Virginia, in a game it was favored by 12 points.

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels

Yankees lead series 3-1

Line/total: We opened Angels -120 & 8.5 under -115. We're now dealing Angels -112 with the total at the same spot.

What are the sharps backing: Yankees +110 and 8.5 over -105

What the book is rooting for: Angels and the Under. Sixty-eight percent of side action is on Yankees. Seventy-five percent of the action on the total is riding the over.

Comments: A.J. Burnett makes his second start in Los Angeles in 2009. On September 23, Burnett allowed two runs and struck out 11 in 5 2-3 innings after throwing 101 pitches. His stats in Game 2 of the ALCS in New York pretty much mirrored that start.

John Lackey has put up good numbers against the Yanks so far this season. On July 12, he picked up the win after only allowing two runs in seven innings. In Game 1, Lackey ran into some bad fielding from his teammates and New York won 4-1.

Prop of game: John Lackey (Angels) total strikeouts+walks: 6 over-130

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels (-120, 8.5)

Pitching matchup

A.J. Burnett (New York Yankees) vs. John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels)

A.J. Burnett (13-9, 4.04 ERA)

Burnett has been a stud in his first postseason with the Yankees but doesn?t have a playoff win to show for it. After allowing only three runs in just over six innings of work this October, the right-hander has two no-decisions but a sparkling 2.19 ERA.

In his most recent outing Burnett went 6 1-3 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while throwing 75 of his 114 total pitches for strikes. He recorded 11 strikeouts in his most recent trip to Los Angeles, pitching just under six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits for a 3-2 win against the Angles September 23.

John Lackey (11-8, 3.83 ERA)

Lackey had a nice effort spoiled by costly fielding errors in Game 1 of the ALCS. The righty lasted 5 2-3 innings, giving up just two earned runs on nine hits and was responsible for one of the two unearned runs with a failed pick-off attempt. He struckout three and walked three in that appearance.

That loss dropped Lackey?s 2009 playoff mark to 1-1. He threw a four-hit shutout over 7 1-3 innings against the Red Sox in Game 1 of the ALDS. At home this year, Lackey is 7-5 with a 3.56 ERA. However, he has struggled pitching at night, posting a 7-7 record with a 4.36 ERA in the evening.

At the plate

The way Alex Rodriguez has pulled up his socks this postseason, it seems a spot in the Fall Classic is just in the cards for the Yankees. After putting in dismal October performances in the past, A-Rod is hitting .407 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in the playoffs. And against the Angels, the third baseman is batting .375 with three of those dingers coming off Halos pitchers including a fifth-inning shot Tuesday which helped put the Bronx Bombers just one win away from the World Series.

Los Angeles is still waiting for its big bats to answer the call. Vlad Guerrero is the lone standout in the middle of the order. He?s hitting .267 with one home run, two RBIs and eight total bases against the Yankees. The Angels are hitting .201 as a team against the Yankees and have only stole two bases while getting caught stealing once. For the 2009 postseason, L.A. is batting .241 with runners in scoring and despite totaling 12 extra-base hits this series, it has only scored 2.5 runs per game.

Final analysis

The Angels have to be deflated after a 10-1 loss at home. And it just isn?t the lights on the scoreboard that have the Halos down.

Los Angeles was on the wrong side of two of the three botched calls by the umpire crew in Game 4. Having to face baseball?s most talented team is hard enough for the Halos without having to tangle with the officials as well. Putting this one behind them will be tougher than expected, even with elimination staring them in the face.

Pick: Yankees +112

New York Yankees (6-1) at LA Angels of Anaheim (4-3), 7:57 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - A.J. Burnett (0-0, 2.19) LA Angels - John Lackey (1-1, 1.38)

The New York Yankees try to advance to the World Series for the first time since 2003 this evening when they attempt to put the finishing touches on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the American League Championship Series.

With a win tonight, the Yankees would advance to the World Series for an unprecedented 40th time in team history, but it would mark their first trip there since falling in six games to the Florida Marlins six years ago.

Should they win tonight, the Yanks will start the World Series next Wednesday at Yankee Stadium against the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies, who put the finishing touches on a second straight NL Pennant on Wednesday, as they knocked off the Los Angeles Dodgers.

New York, meanwhile, put the Angels on the brink of elimination on Tuesday behind a dominant performance from CC Sabathia, who threw eight masterful innings on short rest, while Alex Rodriguez homered for a third straight game in the Yankees' 10-1 triumph.

Melky Cabrera had three hits and knocked in four runs, and Johnny Damon belted a two-run homer for the Yankees, who hold a commanding 3-1 lead in the best- of-seven set.

Since the ALCS became a best-of-seven series in 1985, 12 of the 16 teams to take a 3-1 series lead have reached the Fall Classic, with eight of them winning in Game 5.

Starting on three days' rest for the first time in 2009 and for just the sixth time in his career, Sabathia (3-0) allowed five hits, including a homer to Kendry Morales, walked two batters and fanned five.

"I never had any doubt about me being able to perform on this stage and to pitch well late in October," said Sabathia, who retired the final eight batters he faced.. "But it seems like people did. But I feel great. Hopefully I can keep it going."

Through two games of this ALCS, the big southpaw has limited the Angels to a pair of runs in 16 innings. He has three walks and 20 strikeouts thus far in the postseason.

Rodriguez, who went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and three scored, also has an RBI in eight straight postseason games, tying the major league record held by Lou Gehrig, who accomplished the feat from 1928-32 and Philadelphia first baseman Ryan Howard, whose streak was stopped in Wednesday's win.

Rodriguez, who has homered in three straight games, already has five homers and 11 RBI in the playoffs this year. He has matched Reggie Jackson for the second-most homers in team history in a single postseason, leaving him one shy of Bernie Williams' 1996 club record.

"He's been as clutch as anybody could have hoped for on their side," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "He's a heck of a player. He's playing his game right now. We're obviously going to have to do a little better job of making some pitches on him."

Hoping to slow Rodriguez down tonight will be righty John Lackey, who suffered the loss in Game 1 of this series. Pitching in less-than-ideal weather conditions, Lackey surrendered four runs (two earned) and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

"If I pitch up to my capabilities, I think I'll be OK," Lackey said. "I've had a little bit of success against him (Rodriguez)."

Rodriguez went 1-for-2 against him in Game 1, but entered this series with just nine hits in 51 at-bats against Lackey. However, four of those hits were home runs.

Lackey had been brilliant in his first playoff start at home versus the Red Sox, as he held them to just four hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings.

New York, meanwhile, will counter with righty A.J. Burnett, who is still searching for his first postseason victory, despite a pair of terrific outings.

Burnett held the Angels to two runs and three hits in 6 1/3 innings in Game 2, but did not factor in the decision of his team's thrilling 13-inning win that night.

The Angels have beaten the Yankees in both of their postseason meetings. Los Angeles got the best of New York in 2002 on its way to a World Series championship, then beat the Yankees again in five games in the 2005 ALDS.

In fact, since 1995, the Angels have been the only AL team to give the Yankees a losing record (68-80, .459) in the regular season.
