TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS (1-1-2-0) AT NEW YORK ISLANDERS (2-1-1-0), 7 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Sports Network) - Fresh off their first win of the young season, the Toronto Maple Leafs head to New York tonight where they'll take on the Islanders in the renewal of what has become a heated rivalry.
The temperature has spiked between these clubs since their brutal seven-game series in the first round of the 2002 playoffs. The set included the infamous submarine check thrown by Darcy Tucker that tore up New York captain Michael Peca's knee and forced him to miss the start of last season.
On Saturday night, after an 0-1-2 start, the Maple Leafs posted a 1-0 victory in Montreal. Ed Belfour made 15 saves for his 66th career shutout, and Ric Jackman scored the only goal 14:22 into the contest. Belfour tied Patrick Roy for 11th place on the career shutout list and leads all active goalies. He is now one blanking behind Roy Worters for 10th all-time.
Despite the win, Toronto is still in search of an offensive attack. Pat Quinn's club has managed a mere five goals in four games and is 2-for-20 on the power play. The club remains without sniper Alexander Mogilny, who is day- to-day with a nagging groin injury.
The Leafs play the third portion of a five-game road trip tonight and will visit Dallas on Wednesday.
New York, meanwhile, is 2-0-1 since a 6-1 pounding at the hands of Washington to open the season. Oleg Kvasha scored a power-play goal early in the third period, lifting the Islanders to a 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers at Nassau Coliseum on Saturday. Mariusz Czerkawski added his third goal of the year and an assist, and Rick DiPietro made 20 saves.
DiPietro made his third consecutive start in net, and has stopped 54-of-57 shots in those outings. Veteran Garth Snow hasn't seen action since being pulled in the opening loss, but he could be between the pipes tonight.
The Islanders will visit Montreal on Thursday.
Toronto went 2-1-1 against New York last season, but the home team is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.
FLORIDA PANTHERS (1-2-2-0) AT NEW YORK RANGERS (0-2-2-0), 7 p.m. ----------------------------------------------------------------
(Sports Network) - The New York Rangers take their fifth crack at victory tonight when they welcome the Florida Panthers to Madison Square Garden.
New York began the season with consecutive losses in Minnesota and Columbus and has followed them up with home ties against Atlanta and Carolina. Eric Lindros and Mark Messier scored for the Rangers on Saturday to help earn a 2-2 deadlock with the Hurricanes. Messier's goal 7:06 into the second period knotted the score. Mike Dunham finished with 29 save.
Lindros and Messier both scored their first goals of the season for the Blueshirts, who have managed a mere five tallies in four games as a team. On the history watch, Messier remains tied with Raymond Bourque for third place on the NHL's all-time assist list with 1,169 career helpers.
The Rangers play the third installment of a six-game homestand tonight and will entertain Detroit on Saturday.
Florida, meanwhile, is 0-2-2 since starting the season with a win over Carolina, including consecutive losses. Saturday on Long Island, Roberto Luongo made 44 saves against his old club, but the Isles' Oleg Kvasha scored a power-play goal early in the third period to provide the difference in a 2-1 game. Viktor Kozlov scored the lone goal for the Panthers, who have posted only five markers over their last four contests.
The Panthers will cap off a New York-area road trip Wednesday against the defending-champion New Jersey Devils at the Meadowlands.
The Rangers went 3-1 against the Panthers last season, as Florida ended a six- game series losing streak with a 2-1 win at MSG on March 10. The road club has won six of the last eight games of this series.
DETROIT RED WINGS (3-1-0-0) AT MONTREAL CANADIENS (3-2-0-0), 7:30 p.m. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings try to bounce back from their first loss of the season tonight when they close out a brief two-game road swing against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
Detroit was denied its first 4-0 start since the 1997-98 season on Saturday when they were edged 4-3 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mathieu Schneider had two assists, while Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Holmstrom and Darren McCarty all tallied for the Red Wings, who blew a one goal third period lead. Last year Detroit lost just three games when leading after two periods,
Dominik Hasek stopped just 13-of-17 shots in the loss.
Detroit gave Pittsburgh eight power plays, including seven in the opening 24 minutes. The Penguins, though, were able to cash in on just one.
On the bright side, Brett Hull returned to the Red Wings' lineup after missing Thursday's game against Vancouver with a sore back.
Detroit, which returns home to face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, was 11-1-2 coming off road losses in 2002-03.
The Canadiens also come into tonight's tilt on a sour note after getting blanked 1-0 by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Jose Theodore made 24 saves for Montreal, which had its three-game winning streak stopped and lost for the second time in five games to start the season (3-2).
Theodore, who kept the Canadiens close throughout the contest, stopped Nik Antropov on a short-handed breakaway early in the third period to keep the Habs' deficit at 1-0.
Montreal pulled Theodore in favor of an extra skater late in the third period, but goaltender Ed Belfour knocked the puck behind the net in the closing seconds to preserve the victory. The Habs had just two shots on Belfour in the final stanza.
Tonight's contest also features the two highest scoring defenseman, as Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom (2g, 3a) and Montreal?s Andre Markov (1g, 4a) are tied for first among NHL rearguards in points. Since the 2002-03 regular season the Red Wings are 18-1-1 when Lidstrom scores a goal.
Montreal won its lone matchup with the Red Wings last season, but has dropped seven of the last nine meetings. Detroit has also won two straight and four of its last five on the Canadiens' ice.
BUFFALO SABRES (2-3-0-0) AT VANCOUVER CANUCKS (2-2-1-0), 10 p.m. ----------------------------------------------------------------
(Sports Network) - The Vancouver Canucks try and put the brakes on a three- game winless streak tonight when they host the Buffalo Sabres in the opener of a four-game homestand at GM Place.
On Saturday, Henrik Sedin scored with 1:32 left in the third period to lift Vancouver to a 2-2 tie with Minnesota. Markus Naslund also scored for the Canucks, who are 0-2-1 in their last three. Johan Hedberg made 16 saves for Vancouver.
The Canucks evened the game on Sedin's power-play goal with only 1:32 left in regulation. Brent Sopel took a slap shot from the left point that was stopped by Dwayne Roloson, but the netminder left a rebound out in front. Daniel Sedin got his stick on the puck and slid a pass across the crease to his brother and Henrik tapped it in for the equalizer.
The power-play goal was Vancouver's third in 28 chances this season.
In overtime, Vancouver outshot Minnesota 5-3, but neither team could score.
Buffalo, meanwhile, could have another goaltender controversy brewing after Mika Noronen made 20 saves in the Sabres' 2-0 shutout over the Calgary Flames on Saturday. Miroslav Satan and Ales Kotalik scored for the Sabres, who have won two of three (2-1-0).
Noronen was hardly tested, stopping all eight shots he faced in the first period, six in the second and six in the third en route to his second career shutout.
Martin Biron had been the team's top goaltender last season, but struggled and found himself in a three-way battle for the starting spot in training camp. Ryan Miller started the year between the pipes for Buffalo, but was less than impressive in allowing eight goals in two losses. Biron, though, won his first start of the season, stopping 18 of 21 shots as Buffalo pulled out a 4-3 win over Dallas last Monday. However, he surrendered three goals in Buffalo's 4-1 loss at Edmonton on Thursday.
Buffalo will be playing the third leg of a six-game road trip tonight.
Vancouver went 1-0-1 against the Sabres last season and is 4-2-1 over the last seven meetings. Buffalo, though, is 3-2-1 in its last six trips to Vancouver, including an 0-2-1 mark in the last three.
