WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -- Purdue quarterback Brandon Kirsch broke a bone in his throwing hand when he accidentally struck a wall during a fight at a fraternity party.
Kirsch, a freshman who started the past two games for the Boilermakers, will be re-examined on Monday. His status for Purdue's next game, Nov. 9 against Ohio State, was not known, sports information director Tom Schott said Wednesday.
Kirsch was at a party early Sunday morning at the Sigma Nu chapter house when he got involved in a shoving match, Schott said. During the scuffle, Kirsch hurt his right hand when he struck a wall.
"Although I was attempting to defend myself from the wall?, I apologize to my teammates, my family and Purdue University," Kirsch said in a statement released by the sports information office. "I am sorry for the embarrassment this incident has caused our team and the university.
"If, in any way, I previously implied this injury happened in our game at Northwestern last Saturday, that was not my intent, " he said. "The last couple of days have been very hard for me because of how embarrassed I am about this incident."
The Boilermakers (4-5, 2-3 Big Ten) are off this week.
Kirsch is 55-of-99 for 673 yards, five touchdowns and one interception this season.
