UPDATE:

from Toronto's MAJOR newspaper, the TORONTO STAR...

Locked out Ontario teachers sue school board :

A labour dispute that has kept 69,000 Ontario elementary school children out of class for two weeks took a litigious turn today, when the union representing their locked out teachers filed a lawsuit for $14 million in lost wages and health benefits.
The Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association said the Toronto District Catholic School Board had acted in bad faith in contract negotiations with 3,500 teachers before it locked them out May 16.

Union president Kathy McVean said the association filed suit Friday asking for damages of about $1.3 million a day since the lockout began.

"We have exhausted all of our options in trying to get a resolution to this," McVean said of the lawsuit.

"The board has been negotiating in reverse, which is illegal."

In a written statement released Friday afternoon, the board said it was "disappointed that the union is using its time and resources in this matter, rather than taking any meaningful steps to reach a collective agreement."

The suit alleges that the lockout is unlawful and that the school board is simply biding its time until teachers are forced to return to the classroom as a result of provincial back-to-work legislation.

Premier Ernie Eves's Conservative government introduced legislation last week that would not only force an end to the lockout, but also make it illegal for teachers to withdraw from extracurricular activities when not in a legal strike position.

Opposition parties have stalled passage of the bill however by prolonging debate in the legislature.

The Opposition claims the Tory government could easily end the lockout of Catholic elementary teachers in Toronto, but held back because it allowed the party to trumpet its pre-election campaign promise to ban school strikes during the school year.

Liberal education critic Gerard Kennedy has said the Tories are more concerned about getting exposure for their campaign platform than they are in getting kids back in class.

The board has denied any allegation it is "at the bidding of the provincial government."

McVean said that the teachers' association would consider dropping the suit if the school board returned to the bargaining table.

"Anything to get them back to the table," she said.

The board had refused to send the contract dispute to voluntary arbitration Wednesday, saying it would be too costly.

The teachers are seeking a 8.1 per cent raise over the next two years, which would bring their maximum salary to $75,511. The board has offered 6.5 per cent - a maximum wage of $74,600 without benefits or $73,900 with benefits.

Chris,

are you back to teaching on monday? A friend last night told me the hold out was over? I am not able to find anything on the news?

can you confirm?

NO, i don't see us going back to work on Monday.

I expect us to be forced back to work by legislation.

I don't see us going back before Tuesday, unless something worse happens....and it IS getting worse.

I take it that $75.000 a year is Canadian dollars not US.

TV you asked what are unions good for? When you get your pension in 25-30 years, you can tell me. The Ontario Teachers has one of the biggest and best pensions in Canada. You probably also be able to retire early.

As for the pay you deserve every penny, my brother is a teacher, he makes very good, works with disabled children, takes plenty of skills that I would never have.

in your job you have some advantages. for instance you probably have a job for life (after 4 years of experience).

2. You will get raises keeping up with inflation.

3. great pension

4. you do not have to worry about outside factors, some people make much more but it can vary from year to year. for instance have family and friends in the Gold, and oil industries good times currently making plenty of money, however when gold was at $250, and oil at $10 they were bleeding cash. there is an advantage of knowing how much you will earn.

had an uncle when oil went below $10, his life was almost destroyed, have a friend who makes great at a gold mine it closes in two years, then he has to find work again. you will not have that problem.

thanks

let's officially end this:

Lockout ends: Catholic teachers and students to be in schools.

Wednesday, June 4

With the passage of Bill 28, the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) has been forced to end the lockout of its elementary teachers and open schools. "Elementary Catholic teachers should all return to school tomorrow, Wednesday, June 4," says Kathy McVean, president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association.
Meanwhile, teachers and the board have seven days to agree to a mediator or the government will appoint someone.
"The Association would take agreement on a mediator as a sign of progress in the dispute," McVean says.
Bill 28 prescribes that the arbitration process be limited to 90 days.
McVean says that OECTA has asked the board for a Back To Work Protocol to govern questions and issues that may arise during the reopening process. The protocol would cover potential harassment and discrimination situations, which may follow a lockout, and provide clear, board-wide instructions on handling EQAO testing and report cards in a cooperative manner.

My mom just got back from NO.....I guess the educational system there is in a sad sad state of affairs.....you dont dare send your kid to a public school there.....almost all teachers are idiots and cannot be fired because of their union.....have to spend $$ to send your kid to parochial school for any kind of education....and it costs thousands....

see what happens when there is no accountability OR incentive for work performance????

hmmmmm......
