Is it possible to place a bet at ellis park on the kentucky derby at a window that goes to belmont which would pay higher odds than the payout at churchill. Barbaro paid 14.20 to win. I thought that the payout of 14.20 was the payout everywhere in the world at all tracks and OTB'S. I made a bet with a guy that stated if he had made his wager at the belmont window he would have won more to win and place. He stated that it would have paid 8 to 1 and I said I didn't think you could do that. So we made a bet of 100 bucks. Help me if you can and tell me where I can show him the answer if I'm right. If I'm wrong I want to pay and will except the answer I get here.

When you make a bet with an OTB, you kick back and watch the race on the TV monitors around the room. Ellis is licensed to handle the money take from that track. They get a cut of the track's take where the race is run. It is usually not much and some OTB's won't take the action. To make their own odds would be "BOOKMAKING" which is illegal. What you see on the track's toteboard on the OTB's television is what they pay.
So the 100 is yours. Go to your local OTB to verify it.
What has happened sometimes is the horses will leave the gate and your horse is say 3/1. By the time they hit the three-quarter pole he's 5/2 or 2/1. That's because of OTB computing late money, even offshore books pay track odds to a max of 75/1

Different tracks can pay different odds on live simulcast, a track such as Belmont takes in its own money on a race, and while Churchill will get a cut of the action, they are basing odds on the money coming in there (at Belmont) or OTB on Belmont card, so if you bet the race as Belmont Race 12 (or whatever it was) versus Churchill race 10, they can pay different amounts. I have been on both sides of this in my life, winning more then the actual track, and winning less. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...
