I think if we can avoid the subject of police brutality we should be just fine lol

Anyway

We are having a pool and outdoor kitchen installed. The pool is great for the kids but the kitchen is for me. I wanted to do it and do it right.

The issue is I picked this really sweet piece of granite for the counter tops but the granite company will not cover it b/c it will be installed outside.. They say a higher end granite has a small chance of cracking in the Texas heat so no warranty.

Now a few years ago the granite we picked for the house was a level 3 or 4 and when we went and picked out the slab all of the granite was sitting outside??? So this makes little sense to me.

My question is in your experience will the granite hold and this company is being overly paranoid or is there a good chance I could be replacing it in a year or two??

Dude, we can always communicate as friends. I truly hold no ill will towards you. We disagree on a couple points, we will both live through it I'm sure.

Anyway, I would not put a high end granite outside either. The reason being is that the granite at the quarry or where you bought rarely has its freshly milled sides exposed to full sun, whereas you will on the counter top as well as getting it wet and magnifying effects of the sun etc. Also they will polish the counter top prior to releasing it which draws remaining moisture near the surface and will make the surface shiny but more brittle.

What most people don't realize is that they should be sealing their granite counter tops, indoors as well, every year.

What you might consider is a localized stone or even a concrete counter top. I can run you by some solvent sealer and seal them with a diluted acrylic and they'll be water proof and brings out the color of the stone. I probably have a picture of some I did for a buddy of mine. Looks fantastic. I'll post but I'm getting tires put on just now.
The cost to seal them is cheap maybe $100 at the most.

Concrete counter tops are also very nice and you can actually get them in relatively any look and there are some standardized sizes that are just for outdoor kitchens.

The short answer is yes the granite will likely yellow and crack in about five years.

A buddy of mine has a nephew that's starting to warehouse those concrete counter tops. I haven't really spoken to him about them yet but if it's something you want to consider let me know. I'm sure I could get you a pretty favorable price and they are nice.

Should add, I'm not trying to direct you towards anything you'd need me for, didn't want to give that impression.
I install enough outdoor kitchens to know that granite isn't your best option. Many more options out there that you'll still be extremely happy with. I know granite has it's own appeal and I completely understand that. It's just not a good option bro.

It's like cool deck, exposed aggregate pool decks, and stamps aren't your best options for your pool deck. They fail in the Texas heat, especially if unprotected and heavily used.

I have a concrete entryway I'll need to have some work done on soon. It was probably done years ago, has a few cracks in it now and the way they laid it out was poorly done. I could take some pics. I would not want to get the whole thing replaced, but maybe layer it and take a sledgehammer to it in a few places. What would you do to cover up the bad cosmetics of it?

Engineered quartz is very popular and I'm a fan of it. Very durable and easily maintained. It's less porous than a cultured marble.

Stained concrete on your counters you mean or on the pool deck? If you're talking about the pool deck, I would do a textured or a spray down overlay in integrally colored thin finish and stain an seal it. It goes right over the deck pour and it's probably cheaper than an aggregate finish or cool deck finish. I replace cool deck and aggregate more than any other surface. You can reseal the concrete once every five to seven years which is cheap.
On a stamp they use color hardener and it will wash out.

Seriously Gibber, don't let them talk you into anything but a simple brush finish on your deck unless you just really want aggregate. Most products pool companies offer can be installed yourself to be honest and they are not designed to last forever. They are designed to be cheap and an easy money maker for the pool company.


The stone is maintenance free once you seal it. I'll attach some pictures of some in a moment

That is a very nice offer but there is no way I wouldn't pay you for the work. I have another company coming out today.. If I don't like what I hear Ill have you out to get me an estimate.

As far as the design we want something nice. Not a flat color but something with lots of color and movement like a high end granite..
