Is using the term went missing or gone missing proper english?

He went missing last thursday doesn't sound right and I would like to know if it can be used like this properly. I think the proper way to say this would be He's been missing since last thursday.

It just bugs me when I hear this.

Newsroom jargon. How often would you hear someone outside of a newscast use this phrase?

Both are acceptable in the English language. It depends in what would be said after this phrase. I would say that most people would use the later "He's been missing since last Thursday." as both wordings are speaking in the past tense. Something that happen earlier.
