Total novice and want to pick up a book or two to get started. I've heard good things about Lee Jones and Ken Warren's books. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

...have read both and both were decent books for beginners. Also try looking for Lou Krieger's books.... or anything by Sklansky and/or Malmuth.... ;)

Do a search in this forum and you'll find this discussion and a good list of books to get you started.... Good luck and see you at the tables. :D

p.s. did a quick search and here's the link i was thinking of....

"caro's book of poker tells" is an excellent book for beginners and experienced players. this book has great pictures too.

the most important thing for a beginning hold 'em player is knowing what cards you need to go on the flop or not (whether to fold immediately or not. you can pick that info up anywhere with a little looking. read the book.

Lou Kreiger is a fantastic beginners book. I think most holdem players will agree, Sklanksy/Malmouth wrote the definitive library on mid-level holdem, but it takes a certain degree of comprehension to get some of the concepts like pot odds. Start with Kreiger and work your way up, also no library would be complete without a copy of Doyle Brunsons SuperSystem, which I believe is now in paperback.

Also (cough cough) one of our esteemed member was rumored to have finished a book about the tragic life of Stu Ungar but (cough cough) havent seen a copy of it yet...

I agree with the replies that have been posted thusfar.

The best two books on low limit holdem are by LOU KREIGER and LEE JONES. I also like KREIGER's "Poker For Dummies" as it's an easy way to digest increasingly complex strategies a chapter at a time.

MIKE CARO's Book of Tells is interesting, but not the right book for a novice player. It's fine once you understand basic fundamentals, but it can also be distracting if you spend mor time thinking about its contents versus more important strategic data in the other books.

I also like KEN WARREN book, although it's flawed. It has enough good material presented in an easy to understand way that it's well worth the price.

A hint: Go into Borders and sit there and read several books, and find one that you are most comfortable with. I own just about every poker book written, and keep them all, but a cheaper way to learn is to buy a couple of the primers, then visit the bookstore repeatedly and use it like a library.

Good luck,

Nolan

PS -- The STU UNGAR biography is just wrapping up the second draft -- due on Jan. 5 to Simon and Schuster. The new title (I changed it) is ACE HIGH. THanks for the question, Phil.
