Quick turnaround has given CofC issues early in the season

The loss to Drexel on Saturday was really inexcusable. Yes, College of Charleston is missing leading scorer Canyon Barry, but Drexel has been dreadful all season. (Barry is not expected to be back against William & Mary and is doubtful for Saturday?s game against Elon and James Bourne will be out at least another week).

After last Thursday night?s win over Hofstra, the Cougars were riding high and feeling pretty good about themselves. The loss to Drexel sent them tumbling back down to earth. Reminder when I mentioned there would be inconsistencies this season because of their youth.

There you go.

The two-day turnaround has bothered the Cougars so far this season. Both CAA wins have come on Thursdays and both CAA losses have been on Saturdays. That one-day preparation period hasn?t been very productive so far this season.

CofC head coach Earl Grant said he?s thinking about concentrating more on the Cougars than their opponent during those Friday practices in the future.

?Maybe look at ourselves for 80 percent of the time and then spend 20 percent on our opponent,? Grant said Wednesday.

That sounds like a sound strategy with such a young team.

William & Mary whipped the Cougars earlier in the season, don?t let the 78-70 score fool you. The Tribe was up big throughout the game. The Cougars made a nice run at them late, but it wasn?t nearly enough. Traditionally the Tribe has not played very well in Charleston.

Omar Prewitt is one of the elite players in the CAA. He had 26 points in the win on Jan. 2.

Got a chance to see CofC signee Chevez Goodwin (Hammond High School) play Tuesday night against Porter-Gaud. Remember the only player that the Cougars lose next season is James Bourne.

Goodwin is 6-8, he?s athletic and active in the paint. Had 23 points and 12 rebounds in the win. He projects as a power forward, but with skill. He and his coach, former CofC player Mark McClam, swear he has 3-point range on his jumper and can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. He was strictly a post player for the Skyhawks Tuesday night. He?s a rugged rebounder, but needs to add a little weight.

Think a taller, more athletic Willis Hall and that?s what Goodwin should be for CofC.

Several recruiting analysts have told me that Chavez is a steal for the Cougars. That Power 5 schools missed out on him. I would agree.

I will say he?s a really smart and a really nice young man and he?ll be fun to cover. I think Cougar fans will love this kid.
