TRD brought their motors power back a little bit at Pocono hoping to see just a little change, turned out for the first time this season, no laps leading, no top five finish. Michigan?s long straightways will be more challenging this week.

GOOD LUCK guys this week, I?m off to Vegas, hope to have time to watch the race at the Rio?s Sportsbook.

NASCAR Picks for Michigan

by Brian Polking, Sunday, June 9, 2013 4:57:33 PM CDTFFToolbox.com

Track Info:
Length: 2.000 miles
Shape: D-shaped Oval
Type: Superspeedway
Location: Brooklyn, Michigan
View Average Finishes

Article: Fantasy NASCAR: Drivers on the Rise

Fresh off a trip to Pocono Raceway, the Cup Series heads to Michigan International Speedway this weekend for the Quicken Loans 400. At first glance, the wide surface of the D-shaped oval would seem to have little in common with the flat corners and triangle-shaped layout of Pocono, but in reality, races at both tracks can take on similar feels. Cautions can be few and far between at both Pocono and MIS, and fuel mileage is often the determining factor at both tracks. Meanwhile, both tracks produce very high speeds, and if fuel mileage isn't jumbling up the finishing order, a rash of engines failures probably is.
As a result, it is nearly impossible to find a driver without a few blemishes on their Michigan resume. In fact, only two drivers finished in the top five in both races at MIS last year, and only one driver has an active streak of three of more top-10s at the track. Granted, there are a few drivers that have been more reliable than most at Michigan, but unfortunately for fantasy owners, MIS is just the type of track where even a great driver can have a very bad day.
1. Matt Kenseth, #20 Husky/Dollar General, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Kenseth has enjoyed a lot of success at Michigan throughout his career. In addition to his two wins, he owns a 9.6 average finish at the track and has 17 top-10s in 27 career starts. Four of those top-10s have come in the last five races at MIS, and during the stretch, Kenseth has cracked the top five on three occasions.

2. Carl Edwards, #99 Fastenal/Aflac/UPS/Subway, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

He has been the model of consistency at Michigan, and Edwards' 8.2 average finish at the track is currently the best among active drivers. In 17 starts at MIS, he has only finished outside the top 12 twice. More importantly, Edwards has tallied 13 top-10s, nine top-five finishes and two wins during those 17 starts. He is a safe bet to finish near the front of the field this weekend.

3. Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

While Michigan is actually one of the few tracks where Johnson has never won, he has certainly been close on several occasions. In fact, Johnson has led the most laps at the track on multiple occasions only to come up short on fuel in the final laps. Despite the bad luck, he has managed a pair of top-five finishes in his last three starts, and it is only a matter of time before he crosses MIS off his checklist.

4. Greg Biffle, #16 3M/Bondo, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Biffle is no stranger to running up front at Michigan. He is a three-time winner at the 2.0-mile oval with his most-recent trip to victory lane coming in August of 2012. Overall, his 11.8 average finish at the track is the fourth best in the series, and in his last nine starts at MIS, he has seven top-15s, including five top-five finishes.

5. Kasey Kahne, #5 Farmers Insurance/Quaker State, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Although his average finish at Michigan has been bogged down by a few bad outings, there is no denying Kahne's ability to deliver elite finishes at the track. In 18 career starts at MIS, Kahne has notched seven top-five finishes, including a win and three second-place efforts. Throw in the fact that he has five top-15s in his last seven starts at the track, and Kahne offers fantasy owners huge upside with minimal risk this weekend.

6. Brad Keselowski, #2 Miller Lite, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class A]

After a horrible start to his Cup career at Michigan, Keselowski has turned it on recently. He has a 6.0 average finish in his last three starts and has picked up a pair of top-three finishes during the stretch. At this rate, Keselowski will likely be in victory lane at MIS sooner rather than later.

7. Tony Stewart, #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Stewart is a former winner at MIS, and since the start of the 2003 season, his 10.5 average finish at the track ranks third in the series. Not to mention the fact that since the start of the 2010 season, he has logged five top-10 finishes in six starts. Stewart finished second at Michigan last June, and he should be good for a top-10 this weekend if not more.

8. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Despite a couple of terrible outings at Michigan the last two years, Hamlin's career numbers at the track stack up well. In fact, he has finished 11th or better six times in eight starts since 2009. More importantly, Hamlin has four top-three finishes during the stretch, including a pair of wins, so the good definitely outweighs the bad.

9. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., #88 National Guard/Diet Mountain Dew, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

Last year, no driver was better at the 2.0-mile tracks than Junior. At Michigan alone, he went to victory lane in the June event and followed it up with a fourth-place run in August. At the very least, Junior should provide fantasy owners with a solid run this weekend, and a top-five finish isn't out of the question.

10. Clint Bowyer, #15 5-Hour Energy, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Although he has never had a top-five finish at Michigan, Bowyer still has plenty of fantasy value this weekend. After all, his four straight top-10 finishes at the track mark the longest active streak in the series. Not to mention the fact that Bowyer has finished in the top 15 in seven of his last eight starts at MIS.

11. Kyle Busch, #18 Mars Brands/Interstate Batteries, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class B]

He can run hot and cold at almost any track, but Busch has been particularly volatile at Michigan. Last year, he finished outside the top 10 in both starts at the track, including a 32nd-place effort in the June event. The year before, he finished third in the June race and won the August event. Busch has the potential to deliver fantasy owners a win this weekend, but just know going in that he is far from a sure thing.

12. Kevin Harvick, #29 Budweiser/Rheem, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class A]

While Harvick did win the August race at MIS in 2010, the victory is his lone top-five at the track since 2004. In general, Harvick's value at Michigan comes from his ability to avoid bad finishes, and he has finished outside the top 20 only once in his last 14 starts at the track. Harvick probably is the best option in formats where owners need the most bang for their buck out of a driver, but he should have a respectable day nonetheless.

13. Ryan Newman, #39 Quicken Loans/Haas Automation, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class B]

After winning back-to-back races at Michigan early in his career, Newman suffered through a prolonged slump at the 2.0-mile oval. However, he has figured things out again recently, reeling off four straight top-15s. Newman has three top-10s during the stretch to go along with an 8.5 average finish.
14. Jeff Gordon, #24 Drive to End Hunger/Axalta, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

When he has run well at Michigan, he has been excellent. When he has struggled at the track, it has been ugly. Since the start of the 2009 season, Gordon has five finishes of sixth or better at MIS, including a pair of second-place efforts. He has finished outside the top 15 in his other three starts, including two finishes outside the top 25. Still, the numbers say he is more likely to have a good day than a bad one.

15. Kurt Busch, #78 Furniture Row, Furniture Row Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Despite some horrible luck and equipment issues at Michigan recently, Busch knows how to get around at the 2.0-mile oval. In fact, he is a two-time winner at the track. More importantly, Busch has found his stride with Furniture Row Racing the last month, and top-15s have become the norm.

16. Martin Truex, Jr., #56 NAPA Auto Parts, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

After finishing second in both races at Michigan in 2007, Truex went five races without even cracking the top 10. He has turned things around a bit recently, and he finished 12th and 10th in two starts at the track last season. As long as fantasy owners don't expect more than a top-15 finish out of Truex this weekend, they shouldn't be disappointed.

17. Joey Logano, #22 Shell-Pennzoil, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Logano has been on a rollercoaster ride at Michigan, logging three top-10s and five finishes outside the top 15 in eight starts at the track. With three straight finishes outside the top 20 at MIS, recent history isn't really on his side. That being said, Logano did almost win at the similarly-shaped Auto Club Speedway earlier this year, so he does have some sleeper potential.

18. Mark Martin, #55 Aaron's Dream Machine, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Since winning at Michigan in June of 2009, Martin has had a rough time at the track. The veteran has finished outside the top 15 in five of his last seven starts at MIS and has failed to crack the top 25 four times during the stretch. The normally dependable Martin is somewhat of a shaky pick this weekend.

19. Paul Menard, #27 Menards, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

As his 22.1 average finish at Michigan suggests, Menard hasn't been the most-reliable option at the track. However, he has been making strides recently. Menard has two top-10s in his last four starts at MIS after failing to manage a single top-10 in his first nine starts at the track. For now, fantasy owners should probably cap their expectations at a top-20.

20. Jamie McMurray, #1 McDonald's/Cessna, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

McMurray has pretty much been mediocre at Michigan throughout his career. He has a 19.0 average finish at the track, and he has finished between 14th and 23rd in his last five starts. History says McMurray just isn't going to provide owners with much more than a top-20 finish this weekend.

21. Juan Montoya, #42 Target, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

In typical Montoya fashion, he has been hot and cold at Michigan since joining the Cup Series. While he does have three top-10s in 12 starts, he has also finished 25th or worse at the track seven times. Even with Montoya running well of late, the risk probably outweighs the reward this weekend.

22. A.J. Allmendinger, #47 Kingsford/Clorox, JTG Daugherty Racing [Yahoo Class C]

He will make his first of at least five starts in the No. 47 this weekend, and Allmendinger picked a decent track to make his debut with his new team. After all, he has reeled off five straight top-20s at Michigan and has cracked the top 15 three times during the stretch. Allmendinger could make an excellent sleeper pick for fantasy owners.

23. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., #17 Best Buy/Valvoline/Zest, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class C]

While he will be making his Cup Series debut at Michigan this weekend, there is reason to be optimistic about Stenhouse's chances. Keep in mind that he drives for Roush Fenway Racing, and three of the four-best finishing averages at MIS since 2003 belong to drivers that raced for the organization at the time. Stenhouse should have access to excellent setup information, making him a potential sleeper option immediately.

24. Marcos Ambrose, #9 Stanley/Dewalt Power Tools, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

On one hand, Ambrose did finish in the top 10 in both races at Michigan last year. On the flip side, he has a 22.6 average finish at the track for his career and has finished outside the top 20 in five of his nine starts. Given his overall inconsistency at oval tracks, it is just tough to trust that Ambrose can back up his 2012 results at MIS.

25. Aric Almirola, #43 Smithfield Foods, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

He raced at Michigan for the first time last season, finishing 17th and 20th in two starts. While those results aren't terrible, they aren't particularly encouraging either. With Almirola's ceiling likely being a top-20 finish, fantasy owners might as well take a chance on drivers that have shown more upside at MIS in the past.
26. Jeff Burton, #31 Caterpillar/Cheerios, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Burton hasn't been great at Michigan for quite a while, and he has only seen his numbers decline even more recently. He has failed to crack the top 15 in his last five starts at the track and has finished outside the top 20 three times during the stretch. It's tough to find much upside with a driver whose numbers are heading in the wrong direction.

27. David Ragan, #34 CSX Transportation/Peanut Patch, Front Row Motorsports [Yahoo Class C]

While Ragan had several solid runs at Michigan during his time with Roush Fenway Racing, the only numbers that really matter these days come from his starts for Front Row Motorsports. Last year, he finished 23rd in both races at MIS with his new team, so a top-25 finish seems reasonable this weekend. Ragan could make a serviceable option for fantasy owners in deeper leagues.

28. Trevor Bayne, #21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane, Wood Brothers Racing [Yahoo Class C]

Although Bayne is generally a decent sleeper option when he does race in the Cup Series, he hasn't had much success at Michigan. He has a 26.8 average finish in four starts at the track and has yet to finish in the top 15. In most formats, fantasy owners will probably want to look elsewhere for help this weekend.

29. David Reutimann, #83 Burger King/Doctor Pepper, BK Racing [Yahoo Class C]

Even as he has bounced between teams, Reutimann has been able to hang around the top 20 in a majority of his starts at Michigan. In fact, he finished 21st at the track last fall. For fantasy owners in desperate need of a sleeper option, Reutimann may get the job done.

30. Danica Patrick, #10 GoDaddy.com, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class C]

She shouldn't be on the top of any list of sleepers by any means, but Michigan is the type of track where Patrick should be able to hang around the lead lap. For one, Stewart-Haas Racing has been fielding fast cars at MIS. More importantly, the wide racing surface should allow her to do her own thing and stay out of trouble. A top-25 finish isn't totally unreasonable.

William - I wanted to be greedy and get Johnson top 3 as I am sure you did too but he was scaring me. Didn't know if Biffle was going to be able to hold him off.

Circled Junior a winner against Kahne when Kahne crashed. Official results Junior beat him by one spot

What a great day. Been looking forward to this race all week. Got to watch it all and it was a perfect ending.
