I used to work in a bar that does the same thing. For you Nashville folks, if you've ever been to Sportmans Grill or Sportsmans Lodge, the "fishbowl" full of beer is actually just a pint. It looks a lot bigger but it's just thicker glass. I'm betting that it's pretty common.
