Bill Belichick throws Randy Moss a pass
But Patriots need receiver?s return to greatness

Bill Belichick often sounds like a man who should be sitting cross-legged on the floor while masked men with Kalashnikovs force him to look into the camera and announce their demands to the world.

The Patriots coach has a simple approach to his daily press conference. He has to do it. He doesn?t have to like it.

But somehow yesterday he looked and sounded more like a hostage than usual, and perhaps there was a good reason for that. What else would you call him? His captor wasn?t wearing a mask or holding a gun. He was wearing No. 81 in Patriot blue and holding his team?s fortunes in his suddenly shaky hands.

Belichick could have joined the chorus of critics of his diva receiver, but he is a wise and practical man. He knows he can?t afford to have Randy Moss go all Adalius on him now.

There?s a division title and a playoff appearance on the line here. There?s a very intricate offense to be run and a Buffalo defense to be stretched, and no one in a Patriots uniform could begin to emulate Moss by Sunday afternoon. Belichick has no choice. He has to swallow hard, pay the ransom, and hope that dog who was wearing 81 on Sunday returns the old Randy to him unharmed.

Do you think Isaiah Stanback could handle the job? He was a quarterback three years ago and had two career catches when the Pats signed him in September. Julian Edelman? He was a quarterback LAST YEAR. Sam Aiken was brought in as a special team ace, was inactive and probably hurt for Sunday?s win over Carolina. Jabar Gaffney [stats] is in Denver, and Donte Stallworth is at home and ineligible, still paying the price for killing a guy in the offseason.

It is often said that the NFL, unlike the NBA or Major League Baseball, is a coaches? league, that players have non-guaranteed contracts and could end up on the street at any minute. They live in fear of their head coach because they know he holds all the cards.

But there are exceptions to every rule, and in this case, sadly, Moss is Phil Ivey. He has done nothing for three weeks now -- six catches - and still he holds a winning hand.

Adalius Thomas can sit home with his toes up and watch cartoons every Sunday. Wouldn?t matter. He is clearly a bust, nothing more than the overrated spawn of the great Ray Lewis. He?ll be remembered as the biggest free agent mistake of Belichick?s reign. It happens. So you stick Tully Banta-Cain [stats] or Pierre Woods in there and you move on.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, Moss is different. He is, say it now, SPECIAL. He is arguably the most physically gifted receiver EVER. And yet the Patriots acquired him at the age of 30 and in good health for a fourth-round draft pick. They made that deal with the Raiders, of course, but also with the devil, a three-way if you will, and now we see why.

Moss is not a fighter, like Jerry Rice or Michael Irvin or Brandon Marshall. He is not a leader, like Wes Welker. On Sunday, while the Pats were fighting to hold on to first place, Moss had one catch and fumbled the ball away. He short-armed one and dropped another, and left Tom Brady [stats] with no choice. He had to look elsewhere. Of Brady?s last 17 throws, only one went in the direction of the most talented receiver in NFL history.

After the game, Carolina defensive backs Chris Gamble and Chris Harris questioned Moss? heart and then everyone but Pat Patriot piled on. Chris Carter, Moss? former teammate and mentor, said he was ?shocked? and called Moss? effort ?pathetic.? Tony Dungy said Moss was ?fragile.?

There were 68,756 people sitting in a freezing rain who watched a Brady pass end up in Gamble?s hands when Moss quit on his route. In the NFL, there are many subtleties and secrets that are lost on the average fan and media, but this wasn?t one of them. Randy Moss, for whatever reason, wasn?t giving his all. Randy Moss, who is in the middle of a three-year, $27 million contract, quit on the Patriots. It was as easy to see with the naked eye as Tony Siragusa.

Yesterday, Belichick was asked repeatedly about Moss and repeatedly refused to criticize his receiver.

?I have a lot of respect for Randy,? he said. ?I think he?s one of our best players. I think if you watch other teams defend him, you watch other teams play against him, they feel the same way. Other than these two guys from Carolina after they lost another game. I guess they didn?t think that way.?

Because those two guys shut him down, just like the rookie in Miami and the washed-up old guys in New Orleans. Three games, six catches. That?s one good series for a fighter like Marshall or Welker. And that?s not good enough for one of the greatest receivers ever.
They need the old Moss and they need him now. It would be nice for him to show up in Buffalo this week. It?s a little late in the season, but he?s been late before. Belichick will probably give him a pass.

Moss is a stud, will be in the HOF and has the blessing of Belichik and Brady. Tha's good enough for me.

It was funny to hear the idiots of Boston booing him after missing that catch. Dumb f*cks. Take all the great games and plays he's made over the last couple years in stride but he has a bad day and they boo him. No wonder so many people around the country hate Boston "fans". The term Masshole is a perfect fit most of the time.

Brady has had sh*t games left and right this year overthrowing Moss and Welker more times than I can count when either player was wide open for sure touchdowns. But hey give him a free pass right? How many times do you see Manning throwing 3 yard passes into ground? That offensive line is dogsh*t, Kaczur in particular. That f*ck couldn't block a marble if it was rolling downhill but he and those other do-nothing stacks of flab never get any blame. How the hell is he still on the team?

Moss is the sh*t! If Brady would actually throw him the ball on target maybe he wouldn't have to make acrobatic catches 3/4 of the time.

Say what you want about Randy, then go look at the numbers, cuz they don't lie. How many other games other than this past Sunday can you b*tch about and call him a dog? None that I can think of cuz he usually catches what comes his way. He had a bad day, big f*ckin deal, get over it, and stop bawling because he didn't get you 500 fantasy points, whiny-assed crybabies.:violin:

Go ahead and take your most pathetic shot back at me, I'm sure I'll get a laugh out of it. All I give a f*ck about is Moss is on my team and I got a #81 Moss Pats jersey in black...Beat that one man!!!!:thefinger

Im not or the article that I posted is saying Randy is not a great receiver. Were calling out his maturity ,his attitude.Moss quit on Sunday cut and dry.Faulk himself stated that Moss was hurt by being sent home.

The fans were not booing Moss in general. In fact I dont know what game you were watching, but the team as a whole weren't getting booed until it came apparent they were a little flat out of the gate.

There has been plenty of blame to go around this season between the Defense,One way offense(Welker,Moss) to no pass rush.

Brady has been called out this season in the media. His interceptions, his lack of fourth quarter comebacks.Get your facts straight before you post.

Up here in NE we want championships, not fantasy points. And thru all the mess of a season that it has been were still leading the division.

Even with a quitter like Moss on the team.
By the way its called trying to keep your team together. No one is gonna call Moss out that is on his team.Thats a no-brainer.

If anything there gonna give the cry-baby what he wants,in return maybeI say MAYBE he will give a better effort this week.....now thats pretty sad if you ask me.

Not sure why you would waste your time replying to a half wit??? His reply is stupid and missing the points laid out. This forum allows access to all, including pre-pubic fantasy football teens! Any intelligent football fan, or ex-athelete of any team sport, would realize its a team sport and his actions are inexcusable. WWJD? What would Jerry Rice do? Forgot to add, that I played the shitty panthers at +12 after talking to my friend Boston Dave before the game and the way the media was reporting his careless behavior. He is a season ticket holder and tells me the fans want to sit his ass!

North of Titletown AKA Boston
Merril Hoge: Randy Moss did not quit on the Patriots vs. Panthers

After days of a steady barrage of criticism for Patriots WR Randy Moss, someone outside the team's locker room has risen to his defense.

ESPN analyst Merril Hoge rejected criticism from Panthers players Chris Gamble and Chris Harris alleged that Moss gave up on the Patriots in New England's 20-10 defeat of Carolina on Sunday. Former NFL receivers Cris Carter and Jerry Rice seconded that feeling.

But Hoge said after reviewing coaches' films from the game, he was certain Moss didn't loaf on the Patriots. His comments (via Mike Reiss of ESPN):

"I didn't see one play where he was sitting around, quit, or was 'useless.' If you're going to use the words 'useless' and 'quit', I'd need to see some stronger evidence than words that come out of a losing locker room. After I looked at the tape, based on the things I had heard, I expected to see the dog days of Randy Moss. But there was nothing of the sort. He played his tail off.

"This one was wrong. He needed a voice. I was a player, and if I went in to watch tape of myself, saw what I saw, and then read the things that were out there, I would be so furious and upset, asking 'Are you kidding me?' "

Hoge added that the coaches films, which he reviewed, are a better barometer to evaluate players than the footage that shows up on TV shows.

Moss, who hasn't spoken since Sunday's game, also continued to get support from Patriots QB Tom Brady on Wednesday. He said he has a lot of confidence in Moss and will continue to count on him for big plays.

"Randy is a great part of this team," Brady said today. "He's a leader. He's a captain. He's a great teammate for all of us. You're not going to find anybody in that locker room that doesn't enjoy being around him. I love playing with the guy."

I seen that last nite myself.Theres always two sides to every story.Makes good media interest/viewship.Moss played on Sunday.Did he give 100% on EVERY PLAY?No.He doesnt give 100% on every week, never mind last Sunday.

Sitting by yourself and looking disinterested and basically ignoring Brady when Brady went to give some encouragement did not sit well with me.

Funny how Hodge missed those points,No?

One thing that I have not seen mentioned is the fact that Taylor Malsam, rookie driver for Randy Moss Motorsports (RMS) in the Toyota Tundra 81has signed with Kyle Busch Motorsports

Moss is 51% owner of the 2 truck team

moss.193.jpg

That could weigh heavily on his mind as well as Belicheat sneding him home earlier that week?

Boo hoo hoo. Poor Randy Moss, I own an investment property that lost half of its value over the past three years. I guess I will mope around and feel sorry for myself for the next few months cut back on my business trips , be less effective in my sales-job, I'm sure my boss won't mind!
