Rangers agree to terms with LW Shanahan

Brendan Shanahan apparently wants to stay around to see what the new-look New York Rangers are capable of.

Shanahan agreed to terms with the Rangers on Tuesday, re-signing with the team that has arguably made the biggest splash in free agency this offseason.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the New York Daily News reported that the veteran left wing signed a one-year contract worth $2.5 million.

Shanahan, 38, scored 29 goals and registered 33 assists in 67 games with the Rangers last season, his first with the club. The 19-year veteran also was outstanding in New York's postseason run, collecting five goals - including two game-winners - and two assists in 10 playoff games.

The NHL's active goal-scoring leader, Shanahan returns to a Rangers club which already added marquee free agents Scott Gomez and Chris Drury this offseason. The centers both signed long-term contracts with the Rangers on July 1, the first day of free agency.

An eight-time All-Star, Shanahan has scored at least 40 goals in six different seasons. The 6-3 Ontario native eclipsed the 50-goal plateau as a member of the St. Louis Blues in 1992-93 and 1993-94.

In 1,417 career games with the Rangers, Blues, Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers and New Jersey Devils, Shanahan has 627 goals and 667 assists. The second overall draft pick in 1987, he helped the Red Wings win the Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

- Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist will get US$4.25 million in a one-year NHL contract with the New York Rangers.

The 25-year-old Swede, who was a restricted free agent before the new deal was announced Wednesday, made $817,000 last season when he won 37 games - second most in one season by a Rangers goaltender since Mike Richter won 42 during the team's 1993-94 championship season.

Lundqvist ranked fourth in the NHL in minutes played (4,108), tied for sixth in shutouts (five), tied for eighth in wins (37), was eighth in goals-against average (2.34) and tied for ninth in save percentage (.917).

The 2006 Olympic champion was hot down the stretch. In his last 44 regular-season games, he had a 1.85 GAA, a .931 save percentage and surrendered two goals or fewer 33 times. He was named first star of the week twice last March and was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy for the second consecutive season.

In the 2007 playoffs, Lundqvist had a 6-4 record, a 2.07 GAA and a .924 save percentage in 10 games. The six-foot-one, 195-pounder has more wins (67) in his first two NHL seasons than any goaltender in team history. He was the Rangers' seventh selection, 205th overall, in the 2000 entry draft.
