The Ravens have reached an agreement in principle on a one-year contract with former Oakland Raiders middle linebacker Rolando McClain, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

The deal doesn't carry a big financial commitment from the Ravens, but is expected to include incentive clauses based on playing time and performance that could boost the value.

The 2010 Raiders first-round draft pick and Butkus Award winner is scheduled to travel to Baltimore on Thursday to take a physical and meet with general manager Ozzie Newsome, coach John Harbaugh and other staff members.

his is regarded as a second chance for McClain to prove himself after running into trouble off the field as well as providing inconsistent play on the field during three seasons with the Raiders.

Order "Purple Majesty," The Baltimore Sun's new book chronicling the Ravens' Super Bowl championship season.

McClain, 23, is a 2010 eighth overall pick from Alabama who was recently cut by the Raiders.

He was an All-American for the Crimson Tide, but off-field problems and inconsistent play have plaged him in the NFL.

McClain has 246 tackles, 6.5 sacks and one interception in three NFL seasons.

He started nine games last season for Oakland and had 62 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

He cleared waivers Monday after being released last Friday.

McClain was due a $4.05 million salary in 2013 and $5.805 million in 2014, but none of that money is due now that his contract terminated and no one picked it up.

The Ravens have a need at inside linebacker due to Ray Lewis' retirement, Dannell Ellerbe signing a $35 million contract to join the Miami Dolphins and Jameel McClain still not fully cleared to play following a spinal cord contusion.

McClain attended the same school as Newsome, who has previously drafted fellow Crimson Tide players such as outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw, nose guard Terrence Cody and former outside linebacker Jarret Johnson.

The Ravens also signed former Raiders first-round safety Michael Huff earlier this year to a three-year, $6 million contract.

McClain was suspended for two games last season for conduct detrimental to the team when he clashed with coach Dennis Allen when he was demoted from the starting lineup. He has struggled in pass coverage.

A misdemeanor assault case against McClain in his hometown of Decatur, Ala., was dismissed last year when the alleged victim declined to go forward with the case.

McClain had been facing third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal discharge of a firearm and menacing charges. McClain allegedly threatened to kill the man and fired a gun next to his head during a fight two years ago.

McClain was initially convicted of four misdemeanors, but appealed the verdict and the case is now resolved.

Good player, got lil coaching in Oakland, played the wrong position, he needs to stand up like Suggs and be the out man on the TE or rush the passer like he did at 'Bama!!

Faiders are full of kids with un-tapped potential and lil realization, anyone remember Demarcus Russell? Bey? How has their #1's done the last few years? Gallery was a tatoo artist wannabe and couldn't block a hooker from getting in the car door of a cab!

the Raiders could have a crystal ball for the production of potential draftees and still take the least productive players in the draft..

as bad a franchise as there as been in the last 15 years of the NFL.

Demarcus Russell:mj07:

quite possible the worst selection in the history of the NFL draft.

never gave a damn from the day his first midget league coach told him he was a star.

I'm good with bringing him in. A lot of players do well in the Ravens system that don't do worth a shit elsewhere. Of course we don't have Ray to keep them in line now and that kinda worries me. I'm not sold on Harbaugh's ability to be able to control the 'bad seeds'.

Ravens getting no respect again, especially now. Nobody even gives them a chance at the playoffs.

Really looking forward to next season.

i post on a ravens board infrequently...i just posted this...

what`s the downside here?.....we got a 23 year old kid with 3 years of nfl experience who was so highly thought of that he was the 8th selection in the draft.....and we got him for a song...

throw in that he just so happens to play a position of need and i`d say this is pretty close to brilliant(and i`m not one to shy from taking shots at newsome when i think they`re warranted).....i mean oakland(of late) has been somewhat of an early draft pick graveyard.......maybe (aside from the dude`s obvious personal issues) theres a reason for oakland`s abysmal first round track record..the whole organization has turned to shite.....maybe mcclain will have an epiphany here....

this has to be one of the great offseason comebacks(after the gutting the club took in free agency) of all time....

throw in 12 draft picks and how can anybody not be absolutely excited about next year?.....

as i indicated,i haven`t always been on board with ozzie but i feel we have an excellent duo in newsome and decosta(love decosta and wouldn`t have been frantic if ozzie had fled to bama)....

joe`s in the fold for the duration....the only thing left for me would be to see bobby rainey get the opportunity to spell rice occasionally
......

it`s a great time to be a ravens fan.....this could be the most exciting preseason in recent memory....

and btw...i have a funny feeling that ray lewis will be having some up close and personal time with mcclain in the near future...he already said he`s staying involved with the team...who better to speak to mcclain about turning your life around?........

i`m goosed...:0074

Mel Kiper says Rolando McClain addition means Ravens aren't locked into drafting ILB
Ravens own 32nd overall pick of the NFL draft

Over the years, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome has often expressed his aversion to entering the NFL draft with such a glaring positional need that he'd be temped to stray from his best player available philosophy.

The Ravens believe that if they simply drafted strictly for need they would wind up missing out on more talented players. Newsome is the architect of two Super Bowl championship teams with the Ravens, winning the Vince Lombardi trophy this year with a victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Now that the Ravens are adding former Oakland Raiders middle linebacker Rolando McClain, a former eighth overall pick and Butkus Award winner from Alabama, on a one-year contract not expected to be finalized until Friday, they aren't necessarily locked into drafting an inside linebacker with the 32nd overall pick of the first round, according to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.

The Ravens have been linked to several inside linebackers for their first-round draft pick, including Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, LSU's Kevin Minter and Georgia's Alec Ogletree.

The Ravens may still need to address the position via the draft because star inside linebacker Ray Lewis retired, Dannell Ellerbe signed a $35 million free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins and Jameel McClain's health remains in question coming off a spinal cord contusion. They do have Josh Bynes, Albert McClellan, Nigel Carr and converted defensive tackle Bryan Hall currently on the roster as candidates to play inside linebacker, but they're relatively unproven.

"You?re getting an inside ?backer who?s relatively young with ability," Mel Kiper Jr. said during a conference call. "There?s been several Alabama players to come through this program over the years, from Le?Ron McClain to Jarret Johnson to Terrence Cody, Courtney Upshaw last year. So, they?ve obviously done well with Alabama players, obviously with Ozzie Newsome?s connection there.

"[Inside linebacker] is a big hole. Obviously it?s a key need area for them still at inside linebacker. They need one, maybe two, but it allows them to not have to force something if there?s not a player there. They can pretty much not have to worry about saying, ?We have to have this need filled via the draft.?"

Rolando McClain Arrested Again In Decatur

DECATUR, Ala.(WHNT)-Baltimore Ravens linebacker Rolando McClain was arrested again Sunday evening in his hometown of Decatur.
Decatur police confirmed that the former Alabama Crimson Tide All-American has been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after an incident at Pines Park.
Eyewitnesses at the scene told WHNT News 19 that police officers had ordered McClain and several other people to leave the park after a large crowd had gathered there. McClain allegedly refused to do so, and began cursing at the officers. Authorities said McClain was eventually handcuffed and taken to the city jail before bonding out a short time later.
McClain was also arrested in Decatur in January when he was pulled over for a window tint violation. Police said McClain gave the traffic officers a false name in that incident. The former Alabama linebacker was also arrested by Decatur police in 2011 on assault and menacing charges. He was later convicted.
The Oakland Raiders released McClain after last season. He was signed by the Super Bowl champion Ravens earlier this year.
