Where it is real F ing COLD
I am not really happy with my Vet today. In fact I want to go to his house. OUTSIDE NOW!!

Well my lab/springer she is 12 and she was having trouble getting up but when I help her, she can walk for a long time. This was about 2 weeks ago. She has a memory foam bed that I purchased a while back and I started her on glucosamine chondroitin. I brought her to the Vet last Monday to give her a check up and to see what more we could do for her. He did the exam and told me she had degenerative arthritis. (No shit really?) So he says we should do some blood tests and start her on Rimadyl. Calls me back the next day and says she had a weak positive for Anaplasmosis, its kind of like Lyme's Disease but it is caused by a tick and we have tons of them. SO we started her Doxycyline to see if this would help her. According to what I have read symptoms from this bite are within the first 30 days and since we have had nothing but snow and cold since last fall, I would think that her illness would of appeared last fall.

So by Thursday after being on meds for 3 days she quits eating, takes in water but won't eat. Her symptoms of not getting up are worse and she is more bony. We stop her on meds and on Friday night she eats a meal can of soft dog food, and half a pound of boneless chicken. So then I think she will get better and try her on other meds. That was the last meal she ate and I could only get a hot dog in her on Sunday and that is it. Still drinks water but needs help getting up. She can still walk. Talk to Vet today and he says well we will have to do more blood tests and check a white count and do some cancer blood work.

I am like WTF!! I had her in there last Monday and you did blood work but did not do a white count or the cancer tests then. I just about blew! I thought that these would be standard espeecially when I have a dog that is apparently ill. He said he was doing the most cost effective! I don't give a FUCK about cost effective when it comes to blood work. Not that I want to get soaked but I am really pist, maybe I am just upset and in denial about her health but WTF.

She has an appointment to see my sister's vet at 6 PM tonight. I wanted my dog to see her last week but she was on vacation. I am really nervous that this is the end but maybe she has something going on that can be fixed? It's worth a shot and if not well she has been a very good friend and I will not let her suffer.

first off, prayers and best wishes to your dog bud!

I also got fed up with my vet couple weeks ago and called them to tell them fax all of my dogs paperwork to a new vet... there are plenty out there and like a lot of other things.. some MUCH better than others!

best of luck!

Hope she gets better. Enjoy every minute you have with her in case it gets worse. Make sure she is comfortable, give her lots of hugs and kisses. I went through the same thing with my boy a few years back. Tried all kinds of meds, but it just got worse to the point where I had to carry him outside to do his business. There are good vets and some not so good ones....
All the best Bro....

That sux, and I could rant about veterinarians for hours!! Nothing like a good loyal dog, and I definitely agree with giving her a chance at another vet.

I'm sure u already know, but that Doxycycline is some nasty, nasty stuff! I had to take it after my 8 week course of IV Vancomycyin when I had MRSA, and I only made it 3 days. It made me feel so sick, hurt my stomach, and I couldn't eat a bite. MRSA or not, I couldn't take that medication! Sometimes the cure is worse than the illness for sure!

Doxy is waaay strong, and seems a bit strong considering what you said to the vet. Just as an additive, the blood work (CBC) to check white cell activity can change daily, and he wants to see if it is working. Vets do a lot of guesswork, because animals cannot tell them what is up. Still, their bloodwork tests in THEIR lab (if they have an instrument) costs maybe a $1.00 a CBC (Complete Blood Count). But, the CBC is needed to see what is going on with white counts, red counts, retics, platelets. Just an opinion. Best of luck to you. This is my line of business with humans and hospitals.

Brooks did not respond well to her treatment plan. She refused to eat and was severely dehydrated. She had lost 8 pounds in the past week and a total of 19 pounds in about 2 months. We felt that there was really no treatment plan that could help her and if we did nothing she would start to suffer. Brooks was a great dog and she died peacefully in my arms.

BP, I'm so sorry... that has to be one of the toughest things... went through it a little over a year ago... my hound/lab is an old girl going on 13 but she's got arthiritis too... thought she was done, couldn't get up, constantly in pain... she went through 2 surgeries on her upper spine around her neck area... vets said she had a slim chance, but by keeping her at the best clinic here in SoCal on IVs and where they could watch her they slowly nursed her back... that and driving her twice a week (2.5 hrs away from me) for 5-6 months to a pet physical therapist who put her through water excercises and other treatment long enough for her to regain most of her strength... cost me an arm and a leg, but it was worth it to keep her around for another 15 months and counting... but I had that exact same feeling you had... denial, pain, anger... all that, but my old girls case is such rare one, even the vets when I take her back for a check up are amazed like it was some miracle. Too bad most cases don't end well like this, but some people don't have the means or the pooch just doesn't have the will. Even though I put the old girl through all that to get her better she is still dealing with the arthiritis, is on a painkiller (3x day) another kind of medicine and a whole slew of other things, like special food for her joints, glucosamine chondroitin, fish oils etc. Only thing keepin her strong I'm convinced is that fact that I brought in a new little stray pup about 9 months ago to keep her company in her old age.

Gotta say I'm heartbroken by your story and wish it could have ended better for you without the frustration of the vet situation. May she rest in peace.... my thoughts are with you.
