While Ole Miss was busy beating a previously unbeaten-in-conference Kentucky team on Tuesday, Mississippi State was sitting and watching.

After not taking the court for a week, the Bulldogs will return to action at Humphrey Coliseum for a noon game today with the Rebels.
While Ole Miss may be a little more confident following the Kentucky win, State will be rested. But Rick Stansbury isn?t one to always think that time off is a good thing considering he is a creature of habit.

?Of course, you want to stay on that routine and have a game on Tuesday or Wednesday because you don?t want to loose that conditioning the midweek game gives you,? Stansbury said. ?But I think the important thing it gives you is a little mental rest.

?Mentally we didn?t have to prepare for a team on Tuesday or earlier in the week.? That resulted in Stansbury and his staff not having to rush the scouting report portion of practice this week. Instead the squad could focus on itself in order to tweak the little things while worrying about execution.

A few of the players admitted practices were ratcheted up a little over the course of the week, and that the team made up for conditioning because it didn?t have a midweek game.
All of it was, of course, to get ready for Ole Miss.
?This is, obviously, a situation in which we?ll have our work cut out for us,? Stansbury said. ?Ole Miss is playing extremely well, Andy?s (Kennedy) got them playing together and they got a great rhythm playing eight guys.

?Everybody on that team knows where they?re going to play and when they?re going to play.?
Against Kentucky, Kennedy?s team did go eight players deep. Outside of the starting five ? which was highlighted by a trio of players including Malcolm White, Terrico White and David Huertas ? the Rebels were spelled significantly by just Murphy Holloway, Will Bogan and Terrance Henry.
Off the bench, Ole Miss only scored five points, which all came from Holloway.
That led the bulk of the scoring to fall on the shoulders of Terrico White and Huertas, who each had 21 points, along with Malcolm White who added 20 points.
The only other Ole Miss player to reach double digits was Graham, who had 11. The final starter was DeAundre Cranston, who had just five points.
Terrico White and Huertas led the Ole Miss attack from the outside, and Malcolm White is an athletic forward for Kennedy.
While Stansbury thought one reason Ole Miss was successful against Kentucky was shooting ? the Rebels made 10 3-pointers ? the more important reason to him was defense.

?I really thought, No. 1, they did a great job defensively,? Stansbury said. ?You look at their guys on the perimeter, those guys are big and they did a great job on (Kentucky?s Jody) Meeks.
?With (Terrico) White, Cranston and Holloway they got some thickness and some athleticism.?
That will lead to a matchup against State?s four-guard starting lineup, or if Stansbury chooses a bigger lineup from off the bench.
That second option that now includes senior power forward Brian Johnson to go along with Elgin Bailey and Romero Osby.

That secondary package gives State another way to score, and another worry for Kennedy.
?They?re versatility is one of their strengths, they can do a number of things,? Kennedy said. ?You look up and they got eight or nine guys who (Stansbury) can have out there playing at a high level.
?That is obviously challenging from a scouting standpoint.?

Ole Miss looks to keep things going against Bulldogs

There is no doubt that the Ole Miss Rebels have a lot more confidence heading into Saturday?s first meeting with Mississippi State in Starkville, but the question is can they continue to build off their impressive win over No. 24 Kentucky this past Tuesday.

Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said that while his team had a good approach against the Wildcats, the effort must remain consistent if the Rebels are to have a shot of defeating the Bulldogs at noon in Humphrey Coliseum.

?In this league, you really don?t have the luxury of saying ?ok, this is your in-state rival and this game has more significance than the next game.? They are all very, very difficult and if you don?t approach every game with a consistent mindset you?re not going to be successful long-term,? Kennedy said. ?For us, the Kentucky game showed our kids that if we take the right approach we can be successful. We realize that our margin for error is very small, but if we do approach things the right way, I hope that game showed them in their own minds what they are capable of achieving.?

Ole Miss enters Saturday?s tilt with an 11-9 overall mark and a 2-4 record in Southeastern Conference play. Mississippi State, which didn?t play during the midweek, is coming off a 67-61 win over Georgia. The Bulldogs are 14-6 overall and 4-1 in the SEC, with their lone loss coming on the road at LSU.

Four-guard lineup for MSU

MSU has been featuring a four-guard lineup recently and Kennedy said that has made them a tough team to prepare for.

?I think their versatility is a strength for them. They can do a number of things. (Dee) Bost looks like he is becoming more comfortable at the point guard position which allows (Barry) Stewart, (Phil) Turner and Ravern (Johnson) to roam on that perimeter and do what they do best, which is shoot at a high percentage,? Kennedy said. ?They have eight or nine different guys which gives Rick the ability to play a lot of different formations which is challenging from a scouting standpoint.?

The Bulldogs? lone big man in the middle, center Jarvis Varnado, is the team?s leading scorer with a 13 points per game average. Varnado has been known for his defense during his first two seasons with MSU, but his improved offensive game has made him an even bigger factor in games this year.

?He?s really improved in all facets of his game. He has evolved a lot offensively. Last year when they threw it close, nine times out of 10, it was going to Charles Rhodes for obvious reasons. This year, their spacing is good and they?re playing with four perimeter players who can all make their shots which spaces you to the perimeter and allows Varnado to score inside,? Kennedy said. ?He is still the best defender at the basket in college basketball. He?s got an uncanny ability to block shots. When you see him physically, you would think his lack of bulk would take a toll over the course of the season, but obviously that has not been the case. He has great length and timing and he?s done a terrific job of using what he has in an effective way. He does them in position to where he can be successful.?

Varnado has improved

MSU coach Rick Stansbury said Thursday that Varnado has improved on offense due to strong work in the offseason and not having Rhodes to depend on in the middle of the lane.

?We feel like he?s a much better offensive player and I think there are two reasons for that. No. 1, his strength level has gotten better and No. 2, he?s had to play next to Charles Rhodes for two years and Charles got the majority of those shots down low,? Stansbury said of Varnado, who is averaging almost five blocks per game and 9.3 rebounds per contest. ?There is no substitute for experience and I think he?s gotten that over the last two years. The confidence he?s gained has allowed him to show his offensive ability in a lot of ways right now.?

Ole Miss? ability to score points and play hard are things that Stansbury noticed during film study for Saturday?s game. The veteran coach seemed impressed by what the Rebels have been able to do without a full deck and how well they scored against a good defensive team in Kentucky.

?Ole Miss is playing extremely well. Andy?s got them playing together and playing hard. They?ve got great rhythm right now and they?re playing eight guys so everyone knows where they?re going to play at,? Stansbury said. ?They have some guys that can score some points and jump up and make some 3-pointers. They can jump up and make shots and scored some points.

?They scored 85 points against Kentucky, which is a very good defensive team. I really thought they did a great job defensively. They have some size, their guards are big, strong guys and they have some big inside guys in (Malcolm) White, (Murphy) Holloway and (Zack) Graham.?

Ole Miss is expected to stick with the lineup that worked so well against Kentucky against the Bulldogs which means junior David Huertas (19.6, 4.9), freshman Terrico White (9.9, 3.2) and Graham (7.4, 3.1) in the backcourt and Malcolm White (6.4, 5.0) and DeAundre Cranston (3.1, 4.4) in the frontcourt.

Mississippi State should counter the Rebels with Stewart (10.6, 3.3), Bost (9.7, 3.2), Turner (7.7, 3.5) and Johnson (12.5, 3.6) in the four-guard set, while Varnado mans the middle.
