Texas +3 over OU ***
The 1st time I ever heard of the red river was I think a John Wayne movie . Then in 1969 as a freshmen at North Texas some of the guys in the dorm convinced me and my roommate to drive down to downtown Dallas and watch the pre-game friday night festival. It was bumper to bumper cars beeping their horns at each other either sticking their heads out the window giving a hook'em or down hook'em sign. There were 100s of police all over the down town streets and paddy wagons on every corner. We needed to make sure you had your id and draft cards with you. I had never seen such a parade like this. I do remember cars coming up to us looking to see if we were Texas or OU fans as we walked the down town side walks . we were yelling Mets since it was in the middle of the World series between the Mets and Baltimore . I remember 2 toilet commodes had been throw out of some Dallas hotels and police officers were checking draft cards Think there was more police then crowds The paddy wagons were filled and the next day in the Dallas morning news it reported over 800 arrests . My North Texas buddies and myself were all drunk but we stayed clear of trouble. I do remember getting carded about 2 or 3 times . Anyway I realized for the 2nd time how Texans hate Oklahoman's and vice versa. the 1st time was in a Science lab 1st semester when our lab instructor was from Oklahoma. For 10 points of extra credit on a quiz question number 10 was " What is the greatest capital in the US". And don't forget I'm from Oklahoma " So as he collected the tests at the end of the period he read over and over again Oklahoma City. And smiled . So I turn my quiz in and and put Albany N Y He looked at me and smiled saying " you ain't getting any extra points.. He wanted all those Texans to kiss his ass and they did. But not me the fool who needed those extra points more then anybody. thick headed fool and 50 years later haven't changed . anyway it was then I realized Texans and people from Oklahoma aren't to fond of each other.
Then the following year I started dating a tall skinny Texan from Paris Texas . Paris is in East Texas about 12 miles south of the Oklahoma border. My 1st night in Paris we drive up to Hugo ,Oklahoma and cross the state border line the Red river .. We pull over because I want to see this river.. It was red alright . Red mud or red clay So the red river is red .
What does this all have to do with saturdays game, nothing .. just a back round on the red river rivalry I don't know who even won the OU-Tex 1969 because at North Texas we had Steve Ramsey the No 1 qb in the country and we were No 1 in the nation in passing. And although these 2 southwest conf teams were playing each other I thought North Texas would beat them if they were allowed to play each other. Nobody wanted to play North Texas because the year before with Mean Joe Green and co they beat undefeated Arkansas when Ronnie Shanklin caught a Ramsey TD pass that the southwest refs ruled incomplete . they claimed he trapped it but watching it on 16 mm tape it was never trapped .
Have a lot on the Texas-OU game . Bjorn is now being mentioned on some Heisman lists . I bought all my racquetball buddies here in Austin a $5 ticket for him to win the Heisman . This week there all excited and I told them all I want his my $5 back you keep the winnings. It was 20-1 back later to break this game down
