Finally had my coffee tainted laptop looked at and Compaq said it just needs a new hard drive (assuming I don't want the screen fixed) but they wanted $300 to do it. I told them just to ship it back to me. Certainly I can get one cheaper than that, right? Also, what about an OS for it then, I assume it comes without one and I only have the upgrade for windows XP, not the full version.
Thanks again

Whoa...gotta give me more details Penguin. I forgot the specs of the laptop you're talking about...sorry.

Is the $300 for parts and labor? Because for a laptop those things are delicate and not every Joe Blow can fix a laptop hard drive. I dunno...I think $300 might be a reasonable price depending on the specs of the hard drive.

Besides if they sent it back to you, what are you going to do with it? I'm assuming it doesn't work...

don't pay the $300.

list the specs and i can point you where to buy a new one and i will walk you through how to replace it over the phone.

one of the easiest things on a laptop to replace is the hard drive and i have swapped out hundreds of them, Compaq's exclusively.

e-mail if you need my help at tmaculate1@yahooDOTcom.

When it gets back here I will list the exact problems and specs and if need be I can have the local repair shop replace it for about the same cost.

I had it open to dry it out and had the hard drive out of it, seemed like it just pulled out and popped back in, but maybe thats what really fugged it up huh? Thanks for the offer to e-mail you, I just might after they ship it back to me. My real concern was getting an operating system on the new drive (cost).

Penquin, not sure but where it is a Compaq you may need their restore disc which contains all the drivers and special Compaq crap. But list model and maybe I can get my hands on one.

This model did not come with a recovery disk, it was on the hard drive already. Never really made sense to me, but that's how it worked. It was/is a Compaq Presario 2710.

Compaq Presario 2710 PIII-M / 1.13GHz / 20GB / 512MB / CD-RW / DVD / 15.0" TFT / WinXP / Notebook Computer

I won't be back to work until Wednesday but I will call a couple of Compaq techs then and see if they can get a restore disk if you still need it. I haven't worked with Compaqs myself for a few years.

Hey PengiunFan,

I'd say just bite the bullet on $300 and get the laptop fixed. I don't think you'll be able to get anything close to the same laptop you have now for $300. I had a Presario laptop and I remember the hard drives are built-in...so thats maybe a big factor in the costs.

But see what the other guys can quote you on good prices to fix it or new ones. :)

I just sold an HP notebook on Ebay with almost those same specs for only $550, so no way you pay that $300 for a focking hard drive without finding a better deal.

send me an e-mail and I will help you out.

Penquin, I don't know how you are making out with your drive. But the Compaq tech I talked to said he needed the serial number. If you are still having trouble let me know. I was trying to get you a recovery disk. But that might come with a hard drive. Not sure. Where it is Compaq you need to replace it with Compaq I think.

Believe it or not when I told the pin-heads to send it back to me they thought I said send it for another estimate. I guess they sound alike in some language. This estimate was $1000.00. When/if I get this thing back I will let you know.
