Hi Annie-
We got lucky here, huh? I was in Iowa City Thursday night when the sirens started going off. We left the bar we were at and went to my buddy's house--on Muscatine Ave. You probably don't know Iowa City streets, do you..lol
Got there as the sky was lighting up the storm clouds and we saw the twister heading for the ground. We got inside and went down stairs as the power went off. half hour later we came upstairs and went outside to check on the house. Other than a few small limbs down, his house and the neighborhood was OK. We saw some people walking towards downtown, so we headed that way. His house is approx 10 blocks from the heart of downtown IC-- but he lives less than 3 blocks from that sorority that was destroyed. Thats on Iowa Ave, and the 7 blocks or so of Iowa that lead into the heart of downtown were just tore up--the Times had some good picks of the devastation.
Seeing that, we turned around and walked to other friends of ours that live in the downtown area and were very relieved to find them safe and with no damages to their homes, either. I spoke with another friend this morning who had 3 of his apartment complexes all but destroyed in the storm; none of his tenents were hurt.
I headed for home in the morning, taking Hwy 6 out of town to check some of the damage on that end of town. Just east of West Liberty, I put my car in the ditch--rolled it 3 times and it ended up on the roof. I unbuckled myself, crawled out the rear window and the parametics hauled my ass back to IC--to the U of I emergency room.
I'm fine, other than some road rash on my hands and knees and some cuts from all the glass-- car is totaled. Crazy weekend I had, huh?
