Huge REM fan here; we were playing them at the campus radio station in 1983 before many had ever heard of them. They played in Iowa City in both '85 and '86 as they began to gain a wider audience. Many credit REM for the beginnings of the "college rock" sound along with bands like Mudhoney, Camper Van Beethoven etc etc.
I thought their latest album sounded a lot like their early stuff and was easily one of their stronger albums.

Solo albums to come?

Agree with you Redsfann - hoping for solo stuff. R.E.M. is/was my favorite band, and I think they somewhat define a generation of wonderful music. Really love the last CD, too, much like the old stuff. Some great personal quotes from the band members on the website about calling it quits - they remain a class act.

As for music, for me, R.E.M. presented "Life's Rich Pageant."

Are you familiar with Bob Mould, Chadman?
He has a great write-up on R.E.M on his website about how he and Peter Buck collaborated on a few things and how the band were fans of him and vice versa.

On Letterman in 1983.....:toast:

Wonderful memory, Redsfann - yes, I know of Mould, and like some of his music. Will check that out, great to see the old Letterman, too...:0074

The Salon article was terrific - it's always great reading or listening to musicians talk about other musicians. Clearly, R.E.M. were well respected by their peers.
