turns out, the mixed doubles is the greatest event ever (excluding anything on red clay, obvi) and i hope they bring it back every year.

It is good for the fans, but total bullshit for the players.

oh, it absolutely fucks the doubles players. i'm actually shocked they deigned to invite errani & vavassori. i thought they were a bargain at -160. seemed TOO easy at that price.

i think the only fans who would enjoy it are the casual fans who only watch the top 10 players. because it sure ain't gonna be good doubles tennis.

although i kinda wish i saw opelka serving to muchova. did he hold back at all?

anyway, as many have said... this shit is really just a glorified exhibition.

my takeaways...

as expected, the only true doubles team won the tournament.

if the us open keeps this format (and/or other majors adopt it as well), i'm guessing they won't even invite one real doubles team going forward. just so the top singles players don't get embarrassed by "inferior" players.

ruud and swiatek looked like complete assholes during the trophy ceremony. like two spoiled children, they couldn't shut their traps for two minutes while vavassori and errani gave their speeches. they just kept chit chatting directly behind the winners. for fuck's sake, show a little respect to the players who just beat you.

fuck the majority of fans who were rooting for swiatek and ruud.

and good on errani for concluding her speech with "this is for the doubles players who couldn't play in this tournament."

So so much I could say, but I think I said it best when I said "great for the fans, horrific for the players". So many players got totally fucked over, it is as simple as that.

And if you know anything about high level tennis......doubles is COMPLETELY different from singles.

I was way way way better in doubles then in singles, seeing 100's of doubles players get fucked over pisses me off. Of course it is the players fault, Canadian Vasek Pospisil has been trying for 2.5 years now to get a union going. But of course many top players won't join up because they are cowards. This "Mixed Doubles Thing" would never have happened it the players had a say (like other sports).

Oh and if you were a real fan you were cheering for Andrea Vavassori, good to see him get a bunch of money, I was super happy to see that. There were thousands of former doubles players cheering for Andrea Vavassori trust me on that one.

The USTA just made a gazillion dollars off of that. Just a matter of time before the other three do it as well. Wimbledon might hold off because of tradition, but I doubt it.

There is no way Tennis Australia and The French Tennis Federation say no to all that money (again Wimbledon may hold off). And remember the fans love it, no way the others don't "get on board". Of course there are things they could do to make it better but it is all about money. All they care about is getting the Top 5-10 men/women singles players playing and as long as they get that, that is all they care about.

And if the men don't ever get a Union going (it will never happen) the Grand Slams will soon be like this for doubles as well, yep not just the mixed, but ALL doubles.

Money Talks.💰💲💲💲

On the men's side all the top singles players know that if they ever played a best out of 5 sets doubles match against any of the top 30 doubles teams in the world they'd lose. They all know this, it ain't a secret. You have to practice doubles, it is a totally different game and the advantage of players playing together week after week is enormous.

Back when Davis Cup was best out of 5 sets, yes even when playing for your country, almost every time you'd see "two top singles players" playing against "two guys ya never heard off" the "guys you never heard of" always won.

Hell in NCAA tennis you have guys that don't even make the singles line-up playing just doubles. Why? Because doubles is a different game, yes, that's why.

The only exception to the rule is at the Olympics, and that is because at the Olympics you had "singles players" actually spend months playing together before the tournament began. And remember you have to play with your countrymen, so you had lots of "new teams" playing with one another. But even with that said, go look at the Olympic Men's Doubles Gold Medal winners in past 40 years, you'll see lots of doubles players winning the gold medal. And all those winners were playing against the best tennis players that ever lived (everybody plays doubles at the Olympics).
