The failure of the officials to spot the facemask and/or roughing the passer penalties during the final play of Sunday's Packers-Cardinals game directly resulted in Arizona's 51-45 overtime win.

And before we go any farther in this regard, let's be clear. Rule 12, Section 2, Article 5 states that "[n]o player shall twist, turn, or pull the facemask of an opponent in any direction."

So Michael Adams' hit on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers should have drawn a flag.

Also, Rule 12, Section 2, Article 13(3) plainly states that defenders may not "hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer in the head, neck, or face."

So Adams committed not one but two penalties on the play -- and the officials missed not one but both of them.

And here's our biggest concern. But rule, replay can't be used to determine that a facemask or a roughing the passer penalty occurred.

It's not available because it's not on the list of specific uses for instant replay.

But maybe it should be. We believe that the league should embrace replay technology for all purposes, especially in those cases where no judgment or discretion by the officials is involved.

Recently, the league decided to add clock errors to the list of reviewable plays, taking the unusual step of instituting the change during the season, so that a clock error won't affect the outcome a playoff game.

As we saw on Sunday night, many other errors can affect the outcome of a playoff game. And we think the league should strive to ensure that none do.

No one has stated that Adams blocked the pass BEFORE any foul occurred. The abosolute correct call should have been an interception with a personal foul on Adams after the play. Therefore, what should have been is Arizona ball on the Green Bay 35 yard line or so.

ESPN has totally failed to point this out. As does this article.

actually your wrong....the facemask was part of the play and should have been a 15 yard penalty on az and a green bay first down on their own 40.

it's like saying that after throwing a pass (which gets intercepted) a defensive player is called for a late hit to the qb...but the interception stands and the defense keeps the ball but moves back 15 yards???

THIS QUOTE IS INDEED THE CORRECT CALL.

on the first play--doesn't even happen:(

The one common denominter in no calls, controversial calls and missed calls is referee Scott Green. Check out his past especially when he was the ref in the Ravens/Steeler game last season. This guy needs to be investigated. I had AZ yesterday and feel lucky thanks to this guy. Besides that non call how do you explain SCOTT GREEN missing a helmet to helmet hit under Rogers chin? How does no one see that one? They had no problem seeing holding to wipe out gain on the play but somehow miss the helmet to helmet on the same play.

Just my 2 cents

Just my 2 cents

The refs didnt miss either of the calls. With 75% of the public on Green Bay they wanted Arizona to win. So they just didnt call them. :mj07:

actually that was my thought before the game

then az rolled out so quickly the refs didnt have much to do

but as soon as ot happened and gb missed it's td on the first play....they had to step in.

i was actually shocked that during the coin flip for or green didnt say that the coin landed on heads or that gb called heads

nfl/nba referees are crooked..they all need to be fired and replaced by an independent source. then they should be polygraphed weekly, not at random but mandatory..these leagues make billions and cost is not a plausable argument..
