Steven Tyler has quit Aerosmith [ tickets ], according to the band's lead guitarist and co-founder, Joe Perry, who told a Las Vegas newspaper that he hasn't heard from the singer since a performance in Abu Dhabi last month.
"Steven quit as far as I can tell," Perry told the Las Vegas Sun. "I don?t know anymore than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don't know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know."
Aerosmith had been on an unplanned hiatus after Tyler, 61, fell off the stage during an Aug. 5 performance in Sturgis, SD. The singer broke his left shoulder and suffered a cut on his head that required 20 stitches. Tyler made enough of a recovery for the band to salvage the final leg of its world tour, including two shows in Hawaii and a performance last month at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
"I don?t know what I'm doing yet, but it's definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself--Brand Tyler," the singer told Classic Rock Magazine following the Middle East performance.
Perry said he arrived home last Wednesday from an appearance at an award show in London and read on the Internet that Tyler was planning on quitting the group he's fronted since 1969, adding that Tyler hasn't returned his phone calls. "He has had no contact with me or the other band members," Perry told the Las Vegas paper.
Perry has been vocal in his criticism of Tyler since the singer's fall. "I was pretty [upset], because right before that, he had pulled a muscle in his leg, and we had to take two weeks off and we missed probably seven dates," the guitarist told the AP last month.
"All I know is, he's got to get his act together," Perry added. "I mean, he and I haven't written a song together alone in the same room in over 10 years, so there's been some changes in paradigm of what Aerosmith is."
This isn't the first time Aerosmith has split; Perry exited the band in 1979. "The circumstances were different then," Perry told the Sun. "We'd been touring pretty much nonstop for eight years and the band was just pretty much burned out on each other. We needed a break. We needed to take a vacation but blood was running so hot I just had to leave, had to get out of there. But I certainly wasn't going to stop playing so I put out a solo project."
